Depression

Feeling low is nothing new and can be seen in many species. Somehow, it is more overbearing for us. It seems to linger on and sometimes take over our existence. By definition, we could say that many animals become reclusive when gravely sick or abused. Can we be sure it is depression? Or is it our interpretation, as we love to define whatever we observe? An animal might simply be waiting for their life to end without weaving a parallel where things were not so bad.
Let’s stick to humans as we can communicate with words.
How does one know they are depressed? It is either professionally determined based on a questionnaire or self-diagnosed online. Either way, there is a shift from average, saying something is wrong. Typically, we should behave in a way that doesn’t inconvenience others while following the law and societal rules. In many cases, religion and house rules are also in the mix.

The trouble is, we have come too far away from our native state. Normal means studying for over a decade minimum, making money to support yourself, and staying out of trouble. Seems easy, but it is far from it. Our competitive nature forces us to establish our individual identity. We must study for specialized skills to be on top of the game. It not only requires money but also time. A company increases its threshold of goals and gains every year, and the employees have to align with it. We are pressured to do more daily work to keep our jobs. Step up and take more responsibility to outshine others. Advanced endeavors create urgency as one not only has to be the leader but also be the first. Forcing people to take shortcuts by compromising ethics.

When a three-step formula of learn, work, and stay complaint turns into a network system requiring correct decision-making at every turn. It is bound to be suffocating. Sometimes, this starts as a game but never holds the enthusiasm for long. A human body is not meant to take so much stress.

The system is built to be undefeated. Inflation can never be overcome with salary. No amount of wealth is enough to produce limited organic resources. No amount of technological advancement can overcome physical drawbacks. No amount of material gain can overcome greed. Sadly, we are raised to be unsatisfied.

Only the ones who can stop and see the void between desires and goals realize it is never-ending. They are called depressed for seeing the ugly truth. It is seen as a negative as it pushes people away from the society. But one has to stand outside to see the complete picture. Therefore, depression is illumination. The first step to being aware. The question is, do you want to get back in the game to keep playing or as a spectator to enjoy the show. Please note, not getting back in the game at all is not a choice.

My advice... Many want to put up a fine show. Somebody has got to watch it.
