Circle of Life
My curiosity is more granular than the song by Elton John, you know, at an individual level. Earth’s population is about 7 billion, yet we can’t relate to everyone. Why? Precisely because of the finite size of our Circle of Life. With the global connection social media offers, you might think you should be able to expand your reach. But it is not that easy.
You see, social media operates on an algorithm that changes with the shift in the public mood. It constantly monitors our browsing patterns and determines our likes and dislikes. Sadly, it is only good at suggesting what is trending. How do things become popular? When more people relate to it. And we relate to certain things depending on the makeup of our Circle of Life which is comprised of the people who directly impact us.
We can be easily divided into three groups. Influencers, Aspirers, Followers. Influencers can be divided into inventors, leaders, controllers, and mentors. Aspirers can be divided into wannabes, competitors, seekers, and hopefuls. Followers are simply sycophants.
News Flash! Most of us are Followers.
In order to trend, we have to upgrade to an Aspirer and make the Followers feel good. Funny and pleasing products should do the job. However, trends change. What we experience online daily is a passing storm. A new shiny thing replaces the previous hyped one, and we move on, forgetting about whoever was trending earlier. For consistency, we have to stick with cat videos. Or live our life of obscurity after enjoying temporary fame.
There are still a select few who outshine others constantly. If you analyze, their growth is steady and timeless. Although they touch many lives, their Circle of Life is still small. They may be famous, but people still crave one-on-one interaction. Since close engagement is only possible in person, our Circle of Life cannot be big no matter what. The reality says, the scope of finding our people has not changed, even with the internet. We get exhausted catching up with trends and relating to people on a wider scale. It is much easier and peaceful to be around a select few.
Oh! There is one more group, which is infinitely small compared to the other three - Ignorant. These are the happiest people.
So, are you an influencer, an aspirer, or a follower? If you are reading this, you cannot be Ignorant.
