Just finished reading "On Arcturus VII" by Eric Brown, released by Newcon Press.
Reminiscent of the planetary adventure romances of the late Jack Vance, "On Arcturus VII" is a novella the explores the combined sense of guilt and loss retired pilot and explorer Jonathan James lives with in the aftermath of the tragedy that occurred on Arcturus VII where his actions resulted in the loss of the life of the woman he loved. While James lives comfortably in a self-imposed exile, he's tempted out of his retirement when Santor Vakhodia approaches him for a private rescue mission back to Arcturus VII where a lost generation colony ship has crash landed after centuries of travel. Only everyone on this mission is hiding dark personal secrets and James is keeping a secret about the planet that could spell doom for two intelligent races.
Classic Space Opera in the Jack Vance tradition.
