Hah! That's a fun glimpse into the creation of Gentleman Jole.

I just reread GJatRQ this past week, before I saw this interview, and was trying to explain to my wife (who hasn't read it) that this ^^ is exactly what I love most about it. The stakes aren't life-or-death, but one-kind-of-life-or-a-different-kind-of-life.. which is, ultimately, a much bigger thing. I love the sense of curiosity and wonder, shared with science more than grounded in it, that permeates the book. And it means that the ending feels like an opening up to more things instead of a closing off. It's the best kind of character-driven fiction. So it was interesting and timely to read more about its genesis.
