more insight on Penric's Progress cover

Aha. Don Dos Santos has done a little piece on the progress of Penric (or at least his cover.)

As is not unusual, what goes on behind the scenes is not necessarily what one might construe. Always interesting to get a glimpse into process.

I rather like those first two sketches, although I have no idea what the bloody knife is about in the one. There will be a second volume later in 2020, to be titled Penric's Travels and containing "Penric's Mission", "Mira's Last Dance", and "The Prisoner of Limnos", so there's a chance for another go on the puzzle of portraying Penric (and the invisible Desdemona.)

Christine Fascinating reading about his process. Should have been older women than I see in the picture but it is very cool.

Elizabeth McCoy That is neat!! (And yeah, they are all good pictures -- I do think the "feel" of the first ones is probably best with the one that got picked, personally.)

Talli Ruksas Interesting though it doesn't capture Des and Pen for me. Clearly a brilliant artist but... I responded better to the Orphans cover.

Eleanor With Cats I love Dan Dos Santos' covers and was happy your book (and hopefully the next) was getting such a good artist. Thank you for the link, it was interesting.

I loved Knife Children, by the way, and can't wait for the print version. (I pre-ordered it from Subterranean.) The first time I read the Sharing Knife books I liked them but didn't love them, but when I reread them all in a row, no gaps, they grew on me immensely and I love the feeling of how things not only change but just keep going and changing again.

Lois Bujold Some of the original sketches, I see, had much less fleshly looking representations of Des, which might have been less confusing.

Lois Bujold Also btw, I just got a sneak peek at the finished cover art for Penric's Travels, the second 3-novella collection that will follow next Spring. I think it works very well, and y'all will be pleased. It will be available later, closer to pub, to show off when it gets its lettering.

Looking forward to it. Cover art is fun to see, and the library where I work will enjoy having copies on the shelf. I own all the Penric's in eBook and Audiobook formats.

Adger Williams A little disappointing that Penric is fully clothed and Amberein, Helvia, or whoever are fully not-clothed. I liked the more ethereal proposals better. Will make a striking and successful cover, to be sure. Very capable.
