Life of Pi Review

Every once in a while, as a reader, you find yourself reading a book that just blows your mind. I live for this moments when reading. The funny thing is that books like this don’t tend to be my favorite, but they are something I always strive for because it is in these confounding books that you find yourself questioning things about the world around you. For me, that’s kind of the point of reading, to look through someone’s eye and see what they see.

Life of Pi is undoubtedly one of these books. Everything about this book is bizarre and a little dark. The story follows the main character, Pi, as he lives with his family while they run a zoo. Ultimately, the tale shifts and focuses on Pi as he survives with a myriad of animals after the ship transporting succumbs to the sea. Pi remains alive, afloat on a lifeboat.

Ultimately, the story drifts into a tension where Pi is essentially waiting for the tiger, Richard Parker, to eat him like his father always said he would. What ensues is a bizarre and interesting tale about a boy who subscribes to multiple religions, attempts to tame a tiger, and ultimately finds himself to be a major component of a most interesting tale.

Now, I won’t tell you how it ends. I will, however, tell you that while you’re reading you’ll probably be so entranced in this bloody and bizarre tale that you won’t even be able to guess how it ends or where it is going next.

So, if you’re into tales about an odd little boy who grows to be an odd little teenager surviving an endless sea (pun intended) of situations while he fights for his own survival and strives to understand his place in the world, then this book is absolutely for you.

It is no surprise to me that this book is as famous as it is. It hints at being one of those treasures that evolves with time as you read it more and more. I’ll get back to you on that one, but for now I will say that it’s worth the read.
