The horror of self-published memories that come back to haunt me!

Many authors who began as self published, may have a book or two they wished they'd done differently - I know I do!
Echoes, my first book came out 2012 and I had NO IDEA what I was doing!! I knew self published wasn't frowned upon as it once had been and I knew I needed an author's platform on social media, (though I had no idea what that meant or how much hard work was involved!) but that was it. I had to learn twitter, Facebook etc and I'm still unsure about hashtags!
My book cover for Echoes was embarrassing when I look back on it - I cringe, it was pretty poor, but what the hell did I know with limited funds to pay for one and no idea who to call for help. Over the years, Echoes and Freya's Child has seen some different book covers and interiors as I couldn't afford proper editing and I was overjoyed when Echoes was accepted by a certain publishing house - that did nothing except give it another book cover, limited editing and took my money.
Now, it has been accepted by a decent publishing house, Doce Blant publishing and edited by a remarkable woman with stamina as we had so many edits and problems with lay out!! And now, I can truly say I am proud of my first novel. The novel that has so many emotional ties with. The novel I wrote to console me after the premature death of my son, Jac who died before I could give birth to him. The novel that sent me down the road of author and convinced me this is what I MUST do after it won various awards regardless of the cover and crap editing! I no longer feel shame, horror or embarrassment with my creation, I see perseverance, resilience, hard work and love.

My husband reminds me that I should also feel proud, because when I am famous, any old, limited editions of Echoes and Freya's Child, will be worth a small fortune!! :) Another way to make a reader happy!
So yes, there are pirates out there who troll charity shops and places for old editions of books to re-sell on Amazon, but let them. Remind the readers of your latest, up to date, wonderfully edited version and move on. if people want to spend their money on an old, copy of your book? let it go - concentrate on the here and now and be proud of how far you have come.
Love and blessings
