'It is a Truth Universally Acknowledged'

'It is a truth universally acknowledged,…' must surely rank as one of the best-known openings of any work of English literature. I scarcely need to add that it comes from that iconic story by the great Jane Austen, 'Pride and Prejudice'.
It goes without saying, that any attempt to emulate this work, even in a miniature form, is an exercise in discipline, especially given the massive changes that our language has undergone in the couple of centuries since this title was written. It isn't easy.
In attempting such a task, I drew upon decades of experience of reading this book. By its very nature, 'Pride and Prejudice' is a masterpiece that invites re-reading. I first became acquainted with it when I was in my teens, and loved it then, as I love it, now. The dynamics between the characters bring the story to life. The language evokes an era so unlike our present day.
I hope that readers will look kindly upon my efforts. Longbourn RevisitedWho can do justice to the genius of this most revered woman writer?
