"Over the Rainbow", by Mohsen Sharifi

If there should be a book never to miss from your bookshelf, then it should be "Over the Rainbow", by Mohsen Sharifi. The war between Iran and Iraq was very much mediatized, but very few know what happened there. The book is the emotional story of a young boy who lived in the northern part of Iran, in a place where simple life had its beauty. Unfortunately, everything that used to put a smile on the boy’s face changed dramatically when the enemy troops started to use chemical weapons on the not guilty citizens. The entire story is a potent mixture of historical facts and the experiences lived and seen with the eyes of an innocent child.
The author, Mohsen Sharifi, was born in Iran. So, as a native, he had a real insight of the atrocities that happened over there in a war that was so unfair to the defenseless people. The book starts by presenting the worse episodes of the war, the moments when the Kurds unleashed the chemical weapons over the places where people lived an undisturbed life. Since those areas were not considered to be a part of the war, the hit was even more severe because no safety measures were applied to protect the people. Thus, you can imagine the incommensurable damage such irrational decision made among the population. It is a start that depictures a violent image, but it gives the main picture to any reader. Even to a young one who never heard about the war or its consequences.
The book has a soft side though, under the shape of a merry young boy. The author does not start the story without making the proper presentation of his central character. Hiwa is a young boy living in Sardasht, the small town so close to the northern border. Chosen by chance or a reality fact, his name, Hiwa, means “hope” in the Kurdish language. It is like his destiny is written on his forehead before even starting to read the story. The author also presents the interest of a child that seems very happy by being helpful to his family, and neighbors, in all the needed choruses. He is being presented as dreaming to become a doctor that heals children with a precarious situation. He dreams of a better world, with no wars and sufferance. A world where people can choose what is right to their lives without the worry that they will not afford it. Perhaps the thoughts of Hiwa are driven by his desire of following a prestigious university and earn a degree, although the situation of his family has little possibilities of making a dream like this coming to reality.
But the predestined name of the boy shows that hope indeed dies last. With his smile erased by the disasters that hit his family, the boy is determined to change something in the world he is living, a world that destroyed what he had the dearest in his life. His parents are killed in the severe chemical attacks over his home city, and he and his sisters are very severely injured. But these events do not bring his moral down, as his desire to make a change not only in his local community, but also for the entire world, becomes more ardent than ever. You need to follow the story of the book and see if the boy with the name of Hope

About the AuthorMohsen Sharifi, a teacher and a published author was born in 1948 in Iran. He went to school in Germany and college in the USA. He received an M.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1976. He lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife.

MUSINGS Box Set Author Interview with M W. Russell. The Transient book 1 in the Castle Trilogy

What inspired you to start writing, and when?I have played around with writing stories since I was a child, perpetually living in a world of fantasy. I spent hours sitting in our cherry blossom tree, completely hidden by the plumes reading from the pages of C.S. Lewis and the like, while scrawling down fantasies of my own. Once I had children of my own the need to share these grew, so when time finally allowed as they made their way into school, I began furiously throwing words down.
What is your preferred genre?I’m a bit of a multi-genre soul. Although my first released book had its origins in the Paranormal, fantasy seems to rule, but swinging from fantasy romance for teens, paranormal romance for adults and more recently Medieval romance and Dragons. How many books have you written? If more than one, are any a series…or trilogy?I have written five books – The Castle Trilogy and its older spin-off series, two from The Demonic series, while I’m in the midst of three others from unrelated story lines. Lion Hearts – A medieval romance and The Dragons of the Yew Maze as well as Victoria – A Mystery at Bancroft Hall.
Tell us a little about your book. The Transient – Book 1 The Castle Trilogy was inspired by the death of my mother and my love of all things spiritual, ghostly and surreal. It involves the story of a young girl who along with her surf loving father move from Australia to New York State, take up residence in a bed and breakfast that is an old historic castle. Their new home proves to be filled with the unexplained and surprising – not the least a very attractive young man who puts Melodie’s entire world into a spin when he reveals he’s not quite of this world. It’s a story of magic, love and realms of beauty and intrigue with light and dark forces alike.
Do you have plans for a new book? There are two more books in this series already published – Book 2: The Soul Keeper and Book3: The Darkest Angel.
Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?Christopher Paolini of Eldest Fame or if he was still around C.S Lewis himself.
Was there an Author that inspired your writing?Four really. Sorry, I can’t limit to one. C.S Lewis, Christopher Paolini, Stephen King and of course J.K. Rowling.
Did you have an editor edit your books?Yes. I may be a writer but a polished work requires the expertise of an accomplished Editor who thoroughly understands you and your work. I am lucky enough to work with Kathy La Vergne in the US from Wordlink USA.
Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?Paper, paper, paper – speaking as a reader, not a writer. I love the texture, smell and sight of a paperback nestled on my shelf.
Where do you prefer to buy your books?Mostly online nowadays, but I still trawl a bookstore whenever I get the chance.
Are you a self- published (Indie) Author? Yes
What books would you like to read again? All the Harry Potter Books.
Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?Yes – The Hunger games. Never really enjoyed the writing style of this series but loved the movies.
Who designed the cover of your book? Patti Roberts – Paradox Promotions.
Do you find yourself intrigued by the cover of a book enough to buy it? Mostly yes. It can be quite the draw card.
Do you have any advice for other writers starting out?Remove your editor’s hat and don’t put it on until you have the story down. Never sensor yourself – its spoils the organic flow.
Do you write under a pen name? No
Do you ever write in your PJ’s? Don’t wear them!
What are your pet peeves? Narrow minded people. Melted Chocolate on white shorts. Running out of wine on the rack after the store is closed.
You are trapped on a tropical island - who would you like to be stranded with?My amazing life and after life partner.
Pick one - Wine, Chocolate or shoes?Wine!
Cats or dogs? Squirrels! – Sorry!
Tell us about someone or something that just made your day –Running late and got a park right outside the supermarket door.
What is your favorite food and beverage?Sausage rolls and Sav Blanc – kiwi of course!
How many hours per day do you try to devote to research and writing?I aim for 4 but get anywhere from none to ten depending on my headspace.
What are 3 things you never leave home without (apart from keys, money and phone)?Sunglasses, bottle of water and a bag of nuts on the run.
Sleep in or get up early?Hardly ever sleep but on those are occasions, early bird. Although I’m convinced I was a bat in another life.
Laptop or desktop for writing?Pen, paper then laptop – always in that order.
Your favorite gadget? Garlic crushers.
Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?Mornings or late at night and anywhere from sitting on the bed, in the office or camped out on the beach.
Your thoughts on receiving book reviews - the good and the bad – It’s a buzz for sure and makes it all worthwhile. I have no issues with bad ones provided the writer of it has actually taken the time to read the book in its entirety, given it careful thought and written it with a genuine heart. Constructive criticism is always welcomed.
Do you have a bucket list? Not really. I just like to try new things every day.
One of your favorite quotes –“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore.
List 3 of your favorite movies?Back to the Future, Harry Potter, Never Ending Story.

MUSINGS Box Set Author Interview with Judy McDonough - Deadline (Book 1 in The Bayou Secrets Saga)

What inspired you to start writing, and when?
I hadn’t read a book in five years because I was making/raising babies. Then I finally sat down to read Twilight to see what all the hype was about. I was instantly hooked, read the whole series in 4 days, and decided I wanted to write something that people can’t put down. I was inspired to create my own story.
What is your preferred genre?
I love Mysteries, Paranormal Romance, and Romantic Comedy, but Romantic Suspense is my favorite.
How many books have you written?
2 published with the third in the works, and one completed, but in the revision process.
If more than one, are any a series…or trilogy? The Bayou Secrets Saga (Deadline, Lifeline, and Flatline)
Tell us a little about your book.
It’s a mystery/ghost story/love story about a girl who is being haunted by her great, great, great grandmother, and has to adjust to real life quicker than she expected. In the process, she discovers herself through tense relationships, paranormal experiences, and learning the darkest secrets of her ancestors. It’s a saga as you follow Caroline’s struggles to stand up for herself (Deadline), realize it’s not always about her (Lifeline), and that revenge is not always sweet. . .or is it? (Flatline).
Do you have plans for a new book? Yes
Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?
I love Liliana Hart, and I’ve actually met her, but I would love to meet Stephanie Meyer and thank her for inspiring me to follow my dream.
Do you plot or write by the seat of your pants?
I am a true pantser, though I long to be a plotter. Oh, to be that organized. . .
Did you have an editor edit your books?
Yes, Jennifer Bray-Weber is a fantastic editor as well as an author and my friend.
Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
I like holding a paperback in my hands so I can flip through the pages, but I also love how I can hold 1,000 digital books in the slim, lightweight form of my iPad. I do like getting autographs, though, so if I meet an author, I usually buy his or her paperback to sign.
Where do you prefer to buy your books? Amazon
Are you a self- published (Indie) Author? Yes
What books would you like to read again?
I reread books all the time. It depends on how strongly it grabbed me and held on the first time.
Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version? The Hunger Games
Who designed the cover of your book? Kim Killion with Hot Damn Designs (The Killion Group, Inc.)
Do you find yourself intrigued by the cover of a book enough to buy it? Yes. The cover makes a huge difference.
Do you have any advice for other writers starting out?
Attend writing conferences and workshops whether you think you need them or not. Trust me, you do. Everyone has room for improvement. I’ve learned so much from my RWA (Romance Writers of America) chapter, and for that I’m truly thankful.
Do you write under a pen name? No, but I probably will in the future if I cross genres.
Do you ever write in your PJ’s? Always
What are your pet peeves?
I have a few. Fake, two-faced people who pretend to be your friend to your face, but talk bad about you to others. People who only talk to you when they need something from you. Liars.
You are trapped on a tropical island - who would you like to be stranded with?
Henry Cavill. Who wouldn’t want to be stranded with Superman? Or Chris Hemsworth. . .or Channing Tatum. . .or Johnny Depp. . . :)
Pick one - Wine, Chocolate or shoes? Chocolate
Cats or dogs? Both
Tell us about someone or something that just made your day -
I was recognized in the supermarket by someone I didn’t know, and he said, “I love your books.” Not only did he recognize me when I was dressed down and grocery shopping, but he was a guy! I love it when dudes read my books and like them! :)
What is your favorite food and beverage? Mexican food and Dr. Pepper or water. I do love a good bacon cheeseburger, too.
How many hours per day do you try to devote to research and writing? Any chance I get.
What are 3 things you never leave home without (apart from keys, money and phone)? Chapstick, sunglasses, and a water bottle.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in.
Laptop or desktop for writing? Laptop
Your favorite gadget? A selfie stick so I can take pictures of my whole family when I’m on vacation.
Your thoughts on receiving book reviews - the good and the bad -
I love the good ones. They keep me motivated to keep trying. The bad ones, some make me laugh, some make me scream. When you’ve written your own novel, then you have the justification to criticize someone else’s. However, I still struggle not to let the bad ones get me down and shake my confidence.
Do you have a bucket list? Of sorts...
One of your favorite quotes – “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.” -Irish Proverb
List 3 of your favorite movies? Twilight (of course), Sweet Home Alabama (I’m southern), Chances Are (I love Robert Downey Jr.).
What is a movie or TV show that you watched just recently and really enjoyed? I don’t guess The Bachelor counts? haha! I kid, I kid… I have two shows that I DVR and watch religiously. NCIS and Criminal Minds

Editorial ReviewsReview

“I’m always first in line for the next Maggie O’Dell novel, but Alex Kava’s latest, BREAKING CREED, simply blew me away, mostly with the introduction of a character who can finally and truly stand toe-to-toe with O’Dell. Ryder Creed—along with his dogs!— is a true inspiration: tough, smart, dynamic. The pairing of Creed and O’Dell elevates this thriller to the next level. It left me both breathless and awed. For any dog lover, it’s a must-read. For any lover of nail-biting suspense, it’s a book you’ll not be able to put down. Get it now!”—James Rollins, New York Times best-sellingauthor of The Sixth Extinction

Warriors of Matrimony: by Kenneth E. Fultz Jr.

Kalich stood in the middle of a grass field.
“Kalich, watch out!” Annala tackled him to the ground behind a small foot hill.
An explosion rushed forward, smacking up against the hill.
Annala leaned her back up against the rock wall as she looked out at the night battlefield. “That was close.” Annala looked over at Kalich who got up on all fours. “What were you thinking?”
Kalich crawled up beside her, placing his back against the wall. He looked over at her. “I’m not exactly used to this.” Kalich was a handsome, lean, eighteen- year-old merchant with blood-red hair that draped down around his head with green eyes, being from Camgon.
“Honestly, I don’t know why I took this bodyguard job,” Annala said. Annala was a cute eighteen-year-old female warrior with long green hair done up in a ponytail and purple eyes, who originated from Saron.
Kalich smiled, embarrassed as he shut his eyes. “Sorry, Miss Annala.”
“Whatever.” Annala turned to look out on the battlefield. Her eyes narrowed.
Lines curved and shaped around her body. The lines connected, creating a light suit of armor along with a spear in her hand. She looked back at Kalich.

Kenneth Fultz does a superb job of developing his characters with different plots, twists, and betrayals while Annala and Kalich are determined to rescue Calidora. The Soren army is being harassed by the red sharks, an underground group of pirates that gets pulled into the plot. The fight and combat scenes are well choreographed with weapons and magical powers on both sides of the conflict. In the heart of it all is the quest of a family to overcome all obstacles in their path to remain together. The Warriors of Matrimony is a gripping adventure that reels you in and doesn't let go.

Warriors of Matrimony is a truly thrilling young adult story with an exciting setting and memorable characters. Kenneth E. Fultz Jr brought the story to life and allowed me to vividly picture the characters and the setting. From the very first chapter, the description of Annala, her weapons and her fighting skills gave me a true picture of what the story was about and I was immediately hooked by her character and the whole story. I could easily imagine the contrast between the two countries; one ruled by men and the other by women, both with military powers so different and yet each with skills so powerful. The description of the fighting scenes was something to look forward to throughout the story and each scene added more reading pleasure.

Destruction of Sweet Creation: by Kenneth E. Fultz Jr.

Employees ran from the power plant with high-tech security guards leading the way.
The wind blew a large blue jacket with a green trim to the side on the slim body it clung to. The jacket was worn by Hiro Inoue, a handsome, eighteen-year-old loner who wasn’t known for spilling his secrets. His blue hair draped down in the front and spiked in the back. He stood atop a large oil container, staring down at the buildings and pumping systems below him.
Hiro grabbed hold of the goggles on top of his head. A smile appeared on his face. He pulled down his goggles over his bluish--green eyes. The area became a shade darker with all objects being scanned and processed into data by the goggles.
A white ape, twice the size of a man, with purple swirl designs embedded in its fur and four arms climbed up the piping below.
“Target found.” Hiro jumped off of the container.
“Don’t be reckless,” Director Oyaji spoke through the young agent’s headset.

"I absolutely love Destruction of Sweet Creation by Kenneth E. Fultz Jr. It is a truly magical tale. It makes you realize that maybe teens are as old as they think they are. Being a teen myself, it was a very enlightening story. Who would have thought that a story like this could make a teen realize that maybe we are immature punks who need to remember that we are still just kids who don't know everything. I thank the author for sharing this amazing story. Maybe one day it will become the anime movie it was meant to be. If it does become one, I would gladly pay to see it."-Savannah Edelen (Teen Reviewer) for Readers' Favorite
"Kenneth E. Fultz Jr. has created some superb characters, and I especially loved the growth and maturity portrayed in the central characters as we witness their transformation from teenagers to young adults. This story contains elements of anime, fantasy, romance, action, and adventure. Kenneth E. Fultz Jr. maintains a conversational narrative throughout the book which lends a casual, light feel to it. This is definitely one of those feel-good, thoroughly enjoyable books for any age group that one can pick up and read any time and I certainly hope to see a graphic novel version of it."-Gisela Dixon for Readers' Favorite
