Julie rated it 5 of 5 stars

Shelves: 2011, fantasy, paranormal, paranormal-series, young-adult

I liked Paradox. I was torn between 4 and 5 stars, in the end, I decided the quite original plot was worth five stars.

The plot is new, it's different, it's something that hasn't been done before. Good angels vs evil angels. I read a lot of paranormal literature, so the paranormal elements were already a plus point. Combine that with the element of the angel houses fighting one another over power and mortals, and it truly made for a great read with a good twist. I found the idea very interesting. It's a perspective that was new to me, and I can say it might be even one I'll embrace for the future because it sounds believable.

However, it took me a while to get into it because the plot is very elaborate, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There is plenty of world building which sets a good basis for books to follow. I'm a sucker for elaborate world building, so that definitely hit a soft spot with me. If you don't get into it straight away, keep on reading, and you'll understand why the description's necessary. It's really worth reading on.

From the two parts of the book I preferred the angel part because it captured a new world view and perspective on spirituality. The writing was good with great description and good character development (particularly the little girl). I also found the action refreshing.

It certainly held my attention so much that I'm sure the plot was what kept me glued to this book more than the characters.

I would definitely get the next book in the series to find out what happens next.

If you like a fast-paced story with new paranormal elements and well-developed characters, you will surely not be disappointed. Thoroughly recommended.

Krystal rated it 4 of 5 stars   THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

This novel will have the reader at the first page. The reader will enjoy Patti Roberts' view of guardian angels. The main character, a little girl-Grace, has the power of sight. The very same guardian angels sent to protect her father protect her; her father perishes and leaves the little girl and her mother on their own. Grace conveys her deep sadness and hopelessness to the reader with extreme clarity. The angels watching over young Grace are meant to be "good", however, there are two factions of angels-ones who destroy and ones who seek to help and are "good". Grace's story is interwoven with this important fact that the reader must remember in order to fully understand this novel. Grace puts the emotion into the novel, the angels build the structure. The reader will be introduced to a world of angels and their background, very interesting and intriguing. The reader will enjoy the conspiracy, good, and evil parts of the novel. The ending is a somewhat surprising, but satisfying conclusion. Patti Robers writes clearly and evokes an emotional reaction as well as deep thought in her readers, clearly an amazing writer. The reader will look forward to the sequel of this novel.

Review from my blog: http://nelleehorne.blogspot.com/

OMG…I'm was completely floored at how wonderfully well written this book was. The best "hook" I've read in any book. The story-line is so original! I loved it. That's all I have to say :)

Cons: It ended too early and that teaser in the back…I will not, I repeat, WILL NOT, CAN NOT wait for the sequel!!!!

Interview with Patti Roberts By Nellee Horne (Author)

Ok, the first are questions in every interview :)

Q1) When did you find out that you wanted to be an author? I have thought about the idea for many years and started a children's book about 15 years ago. But when writers block set in I figured I was on the wrong path.

Q2) What excites you most about this career?
Telling stories. The whole creative process that allows you to get swept up in the story. You get to know all your characters so well and then before you know it they have become such a huge (and demanding) part of your life. I love that. My fantasy family.

Q3) What was the process like for you? As in, preparation, writing the draft, editing, publishing, etc. I do a lot of research as I go. For example I like the names I use for my characters to have a meaning when possible.

I like to know what weather conditions, language, landscape etc would have been like.

I like to use as much fact as possible. Even when I'm reading a fictional story, I like to think that I have learned something factual from the experience.

I find faces for my characters and create a personality for them, give them birthdates for example. Know what movies, music, colours they like etc, even if I never use details like that in the book. I feel it gives my characters more depth.

I edit as much as possible while I go using text aloud or I use my kindle to read the story back to me. Like they say, it is almost impossible to edit/proofread your own work.

Publishing I chose Smashwords and Amazon. Soon I hope to use Create Space to have the book in print via Amazon.

Q4) What were some obstacles, if any, did you face and how did you overcome them? My only obstacle is time, not enough of it. I so badly need to do some dusting around here!

Q5) What kind of education did you have in writing beforehand? Just high school grammar classes, college courses, etc.? Absolutely none, just your usual run of the mill school education.

Book questions

Q1) Where/ how did you come up with the idea of Paradox? Firstly, I knew I had a story in me waiting to be told. I chose Paradox because I liked the meaning of the word. And I love mythology, past lives, reincarnation and such.

I was never going to start the series with book 1 and the young Grace, but I decided I wanted the readers to know her as a child first, what shaped her into being who she becomes in the following books.

Q2) How did you come up with the characters? Oh that was easy, they just came into being as the story developed in my head. The biggest surprise to me has been how people have taken so strongly to the Abaddon character. They just cant get enough of him…. Which just proves that just about everyone likes a little bit of evil n their lives from time to time. People grave to overcome diversity and evil.

Q3) Explain in your own words how Grace has grown in this story, if she has. Grace continues to grow as her life continues to spiral out of her control. Inwardly she is confused and in a very dark place. Outwardly she tries to mask her feelings of sadness and just tries to just fit in, to be like everybody else. And more than anything, she wants to love and be loved back.

Q4) As you were developing the story, did you think you would write any sequels? I knew there was going to be more than 1 book. And I wanted each book to be a little different but still to be part of the whole Paradox theme. Book 1 for example is very much about a little girl and her struggle with loss. Book 2 is about the same girl, a teenager now, desiring to fall in love. Book 3, well you will just have to wait and see, but it is very much a back story on the Angels, and how they fit into Grace's world.

Q5) How did you come up with the particular plot? Did it just come to you or not? The plot has always been about, love, loss, betrayal and how Grace copes with all of these things. Emotions…past and present, good versus evil. All the things that shape a life, make us who we are. And then I added the realm of fantasy – everything naughty and nice.

Future

Q1) What's in store for Grace and her family? Grace grows up and discovers that things, and people are not always as they appear… Including her mother.

Q2) What's in store for you? Do you have any ideas for other series, how many books do you want to write, etc.? I actually have a comedy and a mystery book on the back burner. But Paradox is my heart book and once I really got into it, it has been hard to tear myself away from it. I would miss the characters way too much.

Q3) How much would you say you've grown throughout this process? Has your writing gotten better? Have you found anything about yourself that you hadn't realized before? I have grown a HEAP. When I go back and read some of my early manuscripts I cringe…. I can see how much better my writing has become. My friends and family tell me how much better my writing has become. But at the end of the day, it is what the reader thinks.

Every time I read a review on Paradox I am gobsmacked at how well the book has been received. And that absolutely astounds me. Most of all, it tells me I am on the right path. Better late than never…

Q4)How far do you see yourself going? Where would you want to be in 1 or 5 years? Sitting behind my laptop, banging away at the keyboard! Working on book 4, 5 and six of the Paradox series…. Well that would be great!

Q5) Anything you would like to add before we wrap this up? Most certainly, I would like to say…. I envy you! Having found writing at such a young age, in my opinion is a blessing and I hope you go on to be a very success Author with lots of best sellers. I really, really do!

Thank you Nellee for the interview. Patti

A Good Attitude and such…

A new friend recently said to me via Goodreads -

Love your attitude!!! Nothing can faze you, I really love that. Can't wait for your next book in the series, Patti. It [Paradox - the Angels Are Here] was an awesome read.  Wishing you a wonderful weekend, too.  Jayde Scott  x (Goodreads Author)

So that got me to thinking & writing this post……  And then adding to it…..

At the beginning of each day, we have two choices.

And that is – to start the day with a good attitude or to start the day with a bad attitude?

When I was 25 years old I rolled a car.  When I was laying in the hospital bed in traction they told me I would never walk again.  They were right about that.

You have a lot of time to think when you are in a predicament like that I found.

I realised two very important things.  You can never have enough good friends and the attitude you have towards life can make you or break you.

I suggest starting each day with a GREAT attitude  – and then hope like Christ that the day ends the way it started!

Patti :)

I think that whatever predicament you find yourself in, it is always better to start with a good attitude.  Don't you agree?

They don't know I exist.

4273779 John said to you:

Hi, Patti:

Thanks for being my friend.

I don't sell much down under. I think it's probably because they don't know I exist.

Have a great day.

John

Hi John, due to the internet, I don't think it matters where one lives. we could be on the moon or living in the house next door… distance has become almost irrelevant. Unless of course you have to pay for postage!!!!

I am looking forward to getting to know you neighbor! Patti :)

Interview By Farida Mestek

Guest Interview with Patti Roberts!
Hello Patti! Welcome to The Upper Kingdom.
Tell me, please, how long have you been writing?
I have been writing (Paradox Series) since 2009.Have you always wanted to be a writer?I have toyed with the idea off and on for the past 20 years.

Do you remember your first writing attempts?

Yes, a children's book but it never came together so it wasn't meant to be.

What genre have you been writing in? What other genres would you like to pursue?

I really like the freedom of fantasy. Having said that though, I do have a rough draft of a mystery and a comedy that I will work on one day.

What are the main themes of your latest book?

I would have to say love & loss – soul mates, past lives, the eternal search. What was it inspired by?Emotions. Events in my life that made me question and look for the bigger picture. How events shape our lives.

What goals do you set out to achieve when you start writing a new book?

I can't say that I really have a goal other than to tell a story.

Are you a fast or a slow writer? How long does it take you to write a book?

Gosh, from start to finish it is hard to say. It is all about time… And as they say, time waits for no man or woman. If I had days upon days that I could just write straight I wouldn't think that it would take long at all. I have never had writer's block. And if I did I would change direction. I think writer's block tells you that you are going the wrong way. On the wrong path. Time to rethink and start again.

Do you ever base physical appearance of your characters on people you know, portraits or actors? Any examples or images that you'd like to share?

Most certainly. I base my Brian character (Grace's dad) on Eric Banner. I use my Niece Audrey Maddison as the face for teenage Grace. And Gerald Butler for DR Sammy. Australian actor Alex O'Loughlin as Wade. Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as Lord Cerberus. Holly Valance as Siena (Australian). Emilie de Ravin as Pandora – also Australian. Jessica Marais as Kate. Yup, she's an Aussie too.

Introduce the main characters from your latest book. Who are they? Let them speak for themselves. What would they like to say?

Hmmm

Grace – little and lost would say "I miss my dad."

Angela – brooding & serious – probably wouldn't say anything. She would be too busy reading your mind.

Kate – sad – would be in the kitchen making pancakes or Banana cake, cause it is the only things she is good at cooking. And she sees that as being "motherly" and supportive.

Brian – fatherly & loving – would put Grace on his lap and tell her a story.

Wade – brooding & secretive – would be contemplating telling the truth. But wouldn't.

Hope – guiding & mysterious – would say "Shhhh this is our secret."

Abaddon – evil & irresistible – would be yelling at someone, breaking their neck or undressing them!

Theria – angry & spoiled – would say "Get out of my way bitch!" Then kill you anyway.

Siena – beautiful & aloof – would say "Leave it to me…" then cut your throat.

Pandora – beautiful & calculating – "look at me, I'm beautiful."

Cerberus – gorgeous & confidant – too busy off fighting the war to be saying much at all…. Too busy looking hot!

Book 1 – Paradox – The Angels Are Here.

Lives – bound together by blood – forge an unforgettable trail of heartbreak, loss and betrayal spanning over centuries to the present day.

Nine hundred years ago, under the complete cover of darkness, the Grigorian army rose silently from their underground lair and attacked the Bulguardian Royal Palace. The bloody and violent battle between the two most legendary houses raged on. All but destroying the majestic Royal City of Altair.

It was not the first war that Juliette had endured between good and evil. And it most certainly would not be her last.

Today, A little girl's world is turned upside down by a visitor, the Angel of Death. She finds herself trapped in a nightmare, consumed by her paralyzing loss and overwhelming grief.

Haunting visions and the untimely deaths of others are a constant reminder that life and death are only a heartbeat away.

She eventually befriends the unusual little girl who moves in next door with captivating violet eyes and a profound knowledge of things that far exceeds her tender years.

"Masks camouflage the faces of both good and evil. Keeps hidden what is a truth and what is a lie."

Book 2 – Paradox – Progeny Of Innocence – comes out in November 2011.

Spoilers – Paradox Book Review By Lenore Wolfe

Lenore Wolfe rated it 4 of 5 stars

Author of the book -Dark Warrior

I was deeply moved by this book, griped by her grief, a grief I understand. Patti Roberts has a powerful way of putting you in the story, feeling every emotion Grace feels, right down to the heart-stopping grief of losing her father, being seen by the community as a freak, and finally making a friend, but not understanding the forces behind her friend, or the world around her.

I gave this book four stars only because, a couple of times, I was confused for a period of time by what was happening. But I soon figured it out and went on to enjoy this book.

If I could change anything, it would be only to know what happens next, but alas, I have to wait for the sequel. Paranormal readers would, very much, enjoy this book.

New Book Reviews – Paradox – The Angels Are Here

Paradox – The Angels Are Here. Book review by Jayde Scott

May 05, 2011

Jayde Scott rated it 5 of 5 stars

Having read Paradox – The Angels Are Here, I feel I've been left with a different world view on angels, heaven and spirituality.

There is no easy way to sum up the plot, so I shall just say that the story focuses on two elements: one being the war between the different angel houses and how they interact with humans. Some are good, others are evil, and so they fight each other in their quests to become the stronger house.

The second part focuses on Grace, a little girl who's gone through a lot in life, and whose life is about to be turned upside down.

While the angels' part focuses on world building and description and setting a solid background for the next books in the series, Grace's part emphasises her emotions based on a deep loss, her relationship with her family and the actions that rise into a dramatic crescendo, inevitably leading to an ending that will leave you wanting to read the book all over again because you just couldn't see it coming.

There's no doubt Patti Roberts is someone who knows how to build strong characters and a vivid setting. I liked the darker side of some of the angels. It was a unique and convincing way to view spirituality and the angels' role within humanity.

I also liked how they were connected to Grace and Grace's role within the larger picture. I do agree with others who said some questions were left unanswered, but I feel that was necessary in order to be able to explore those in detail in books to follow.

All in all, this was a great first book in the series with interesting characters that invite further exploration.

It was a touching read that I would recommend to all fantasy readers, and I eagerly await the next book in the series.

Jayde Scott – Author of the Book "A Job From Hell"

3rd May 2011 – Book review – 4 out of 5 – by Darkiss Reads

The world of Angels in which Patti Roberts creates is one of greed, power, sex, control with a bit of conspiracy theory which lays the ground work for the war between good and evil.

But who is good and who is evil remains to be seen.  Her world of Angels is multi-faceted and for a brief moment I was immersed into their world and presented with very complex and twisted characters and I found myself wanting more.

The author has truly created a villain worth reading, he is dark and so very bad that you can't help but want to see more of his dammed soul.  Read more…

Thank you, I loved your review! I am so glad that you were able to clearly see the two different parts to this story.

Many thanks Patti :)
