Stalking with Friends
His letters were perfect M-U-R-D-E, the R already on the board. A sinister laugh. JUSTME added the letters on his android phone and waited for his opponent to react to his 39 points, putting him ahead by 72. Not happy for sure. JUSTME had won every game with this opponent the entire three months. A wide grin.Time lapsed. Was JASMINE too busy to play? It was nine in the evening. Maybe she was streaming a movie? JUSTME assumed his opponent was a woman by her game name. He had other guesses about her: probably self-employed because she was always available, single, lived in his Eastern Time zone. He knew nothing else about her except she was sort of laid back, wasn’t aggressive, and never commented on a game, like “You picked some great words,” or, “Hey, let me win once in a while.”JUSTME wasn’t about to let her win—or anyone else, for that matter—if he could help it. He needed to win, be king of Friends, and anyone who beat him, beware …JASMINE was safe—for now. Never beat JUSTME or just wait, which come to think of it, was another great Friends’ name.Pinged. She’s back. “Nice word and 39 points. You are certainly the best I ever played with.”And she wants to chat? He felt a surge.JASMINE continued. “We’ve been playing a while, seem to have a connection.”Oh yeah. “Definitely,” he wrote.“You must be a guy. I mean, over the past few months you’ve used many macho words. And now MURDER. Wow.”“I’m a guy,” JUSTME punched in. Maybe he should have made her beg to find out. “You sound like a woman, with so many feminine words. And your board name, JASMINE.”“You are good. You law enforcement? A detective?”Huh? Definitely not, but he couldn’t tell her what he did for a living—if you called it a living. “Sales, I travel around the country.“Ever get to Gatlinburg?”Christ, was this an invitation? “Just so happens I’ll be there next week.” He could be anywhere, anytime. He wanted a photo of JASMINE. Hell, she could be old or fat or just plain ugly—“Because I think we have a connection. Wouldn’t mind playing with you in the same room. That didn’t come out right.”It did to JUSTME. Playing Friends in person, and then—“That was inappropriate, sorry,” she wrote.“No, I understood,” JUSTME typed quickly. “Say, can you text me a photo? And I’ll text one back. You know, so we can recognize each other in—where again? Oh right, Gatlinburg.”“You’re too funny, JUSTME. Sure, give me your e-mail address or text so I can send a selfie. Here’s my text number.”JUSTME squirmed. What was he thinking? He didn’t like giving out anything personal, but he took a chance. The text zoomed back quickly. Boy, was she smoking! Thirty, blonde, great skin, eyes!“You’re very pretty.” Clean, simple, didn’t want to turn her off.“Thank you.”JUSTME kept a head shot on his phone—his cousin who died a few years back. Sad, the handsome ones die young. But now that his poor cousin, Ricky, was gone, he’d never know. Nor care. JUSTME couldn’t send her a photo of himself, not with first-degree burn scars on the left side of his face. Not that it mattered; once he spotted JASMINE and followed her home, the rest would be easy.“Wow, I hoped you would be handsome, but you’re more than I thought,” JASMINE wrote. “Can’t wait to meet you. I’m Brooke, by the way.”“Ricky, a pleasure, Brooke.” Why not use his cousin’s name too?“When will you be in town?”“Tuesday.” Plenty of time to drive from Florida to Tennessee. It was Saturday night. Another reason he could tell JASMINE, uh, Brooke, was single. She would have been out with her boyfriend or husband. And she wanted to meet—“Perfect. How about we meet at the Gatlinburg welcome center at 7 pm?”“Works for me.” It always worked for him. Another sinister laugh. “Well, until then, Brooke.”“Looking so forward to meeting you in the flesh.”Flesh.*****An older model Ford Focus crept along the main strip in Gatlinburg. Perfect timing. He pulled up about fifty feet from the welcome center and snapped up his binoculars. Yep, there she was standing, looking out at the street as though looking for . . . me, JUSTME. My JASMINE, my Friend, you’re as beautiful as your photo! His eyes locked on her as he dialed her cell. A moment passed before she dug into her handbag and answered.“Hi, I’ve been waiting.”JUSTME tried to control himself. He wanted to leap out of the car and—“Hi to you too. Listen, my car broke down, and I’m afraid I’m going to be an hour late.”“Oh, that’s too bad.”“I can call you when I arrive. Is that OK, Brooke?”She looked at her watch, then shook her head in a sad motion.“It’ll be kind of late.”“You’re right. I’ll check into my hotel. We can schedule our date for tomorrow.”“Sure, tomorrow.” But he sensed she was disappointed.“Could I be so bold as to ask you to meet me in the hotel lobby, just to say hello?”He saw a big smile. He had her.“Sure, I could do that. Where are you staying?”His eyes darted around until he found what he was looking for. “The Country Inn.”Her eyes gazed up and she smiled again. “Perfect. Call me when you get into town.”The streetlight cast a glow on her. He just couldn’t believe it. She was gorgeous, sexy in a green backless party dress. Forget the lobby, how about a room? Only there would be no room. He waited for JASMINE to walk a few blocks away and was about to take off when a car pulled up and lowered the passenger window. The guy waved with a map. “Can you help me? I’m lost, and everything in this town looks the same.”Christ, not now! He tried to keep one eye on JASMINE, but she disappeared. Where did she go? “I’m from out of town myself, can’t help you. Can you move your car? I’m in a hurry.”“Sure, sorry.” JUSTME jerked his car forward and headed for JASMINE. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit! Where are you? He drove a few blocks until he found a restaurant parking lot, where he jumped out of the car to hightail it back to where he last saw her. She wouldn’t recognize him, but what would he do if he found her? Say, “Hi, I’m Ricky and lied about the way I look.” No more Friends, let alone the “motel room.”She was gone. Defeated, he trudged to his car and put his head on the steering wheel. What next? And then his phone rang. He frowned. Who? But then he smiled. “Hey, I was just thinking about you.”“Me too,” JASMINE said. “I’m a little worried about your car breaking down. Are you OK?”Sweet! “Kind of. I mean, I just called the inn and they’re full. I guess I should have called and—”“Oh no. Look, I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but I lied about living in Gatlinburg. I’m here because I broke up with my boyfriend a week ago and needed to get away. I actually live in North Carolina. I’m so sorry, Ricky, for lying to you.”“Oh, that’s OK. It was very nice—”“No, no, that’s not what I mean. It’s dead with him. I’d like to see you. I’m lonely and confused. Could you maybe just come by my hotel so we can chat? If you’re really a nice guy, I’ll let you sleep on the sofa. And if you’re not, you can kill me.” She giggled.Christ, what an invitation! “Sure, but only if you are OK with it. I mean, I’m a gentleman, so you don’t have to worry about me taking advantage. It sounds like you’d like to talk. I’m a great listener.” And taker!“I’m staying at the Valley Inn, just outside of town toward Smoky Mountains National Park. I’m in room 201. And thanks for listening ahead of time.” She giggled again.Ricky calculated quickly. “Be there in an hour.”
JUSTME stood in front of her door and inhaled. He counted one, two, three, and knocked—not too hard, not too soft, just a friendly knock.JASMINE opened the door with a smile that crashed to fear. She tried to close the door, but JUSTME planted his size-10 sneaker to block it.  “I can explain, JASMINE, I mean, Brooke. Just give me a chance.”“You better leave, or I’ll call the police. You’re … nothing like your photo. How could you, Ricky?”He started his sob trick. “I’m so sorry, Brooke. I knew you’d never want to meet if you saw what I looked like.” He rubbed his eyes with his sleeve. “I just wanted to meet a nice woman, show her I’m more than looks, someone like you.”She hesitated but gripped the door. “You came all the way from Florida, or is that a lie too?”He shook his head. “True. I’ve never done this before. I’ll go.” He turned to leave.“Wait, you can’t sleep in your car all night.” She sighed. “Come in, we’ll figure it out. I wasn’t exactly honest either.”He turned back. “So sorry,” he whispered. As they talked, he confessed his real name was Alan and his face was burned at a factory, which allowed him to collect disability. He lived alone ever since his brother committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. OK, he never had a brother. But he wanted her to relax, build up confidence in him.Brooke handed him a glass of chardonnay. “To a better life,” they toasted. As Brooke told him about herself, he nodded, not caring if she was telling the truth. He was, after all, just after a piece of ass. That was the game: seeing if his true looks could snare women after finagling an introduction. And it worked; they always feeling sorry for him. Brooke was next. After a few hours of talk and wine, Brooke took his hand and kissed it. Then she kissed his lips, his face. He tried not to be too aggressive. Actually, he was feeling … light-headed. Too much wine.“Let’s make love,” she whispered. He nodded with a silly grin. She smiled and walked to the bathroom. “Be right out.”He stripped down to his underwear, and stumbled onto the bed.Brooke joined him in a thin red bra and matching panties. “Hi.”He smiled. “Hi.” His eyes drifted to her hands.Handcuffs?Oh, boy, this was going to be fun.“You mind, macho man?”His wily grin answered for him. He felt the clip against his wrists and then against the bedpost. Snap.“You look a little wasted, Alan. Do you think you can last all night?”“Think so—”“Wrong!”He blinked.“Did you really think you could just show up from wherever you’re from and have sex with me? You, like that cheater boyfriend of mine, think you can take me at will. Well, you can’t. How many words is that, Mr. Letters With Friends?”Alan blinked harder and yanked at the cuffs. What the hell was happening? “I thought—”“You thought you could have sex and move on, didn’t you?”“No.” OK, his intentions weren’t that bad. He was a good guy, just trying to win over a woman, like Letters With Friends. He wanted, no, needed to WIN!“Guess what, Alan, you’re not going to have sex with me or anyone else. Not after tonight.”His eyes bulged. “Oh God, please, I’m sorry. It’ll never happen again, I swear. Just take off the cuffs, and I’ll never bother you again.”“It’s a little too late for that, honey.” Brooke shook her head, then strutted over to her handbag and pulled out a serrated knife. She pointed it at his underwear. “My stepfather wanted sex too, the bastard. I swore I would kill him someday.” A snare. “He’s not around anymore. Nor Patrick, the cheat.”“Who?”Her glazed look terrified him. “My boyfriend, stupid. Haven’t you been listening?” She paused. “And now you.” She sliced off his underwear and chuckled. “So small. It looks frightened, like you.”“I beg you, Brooke.”“Right, beg.”“Why me?”“Oh, right, a reason. Well, for one, I don’t like to lose. You’ve won every Letters with Friend game, so I’m guessing you’ve been cheating. Have you been using a cheater’s dictionary, Alan?”“No, I swear. I’m … good.” He started to smile but thought better.“I pictured that smug look you must have had every time you beat me. I almost stopped playing, but had a better idea.” She clicked her teeth. “Temptation made it so easy.”Calm down. He would get out of this . . . he needed a plan. But Brooke worked the knife in her hands back and forth like she was experienced. He wanted to plea more, offer her his disability money, anything, but remembered she mentioned her stepfather and boyfriend. He bet she cuffed them too.“Please.” Tears—real this time—formed and streamed down his cheek. “I don’t want to die, even with this face.”“Shush.” She raised the point to her tongue. “I can’t wait to taste blood.”Alan closed his eyes, prayed.“Good-bye, JUSTME.”He held his breath, bracing for the slice on his manhood. Or worse. The room felt deadly still.Do it already. Kill me!His breathing labored for what felt like hours. And then he sensed her one last time. Movement. A door . . . opening?Alan slowly opened one eye, then the other, then blinked.JASMINE was gone.It was JUSTME.

Queen Margot by Marketa B. Linden W - Author interview

What inspired you to start writing, and when?I was scribbling and sketching as soon as I could write, I was just 5 years old. My first book was about the girl called Andeli who was some sort of girl based on family stories about plane crash, my reading of books about ancient Egypt and my paternal English heritage. I have never finished the story but I remember I forced all kids in the kindergarden and primary school to read it:]] There were funny moments when I got a typewriter and I wrote a screenplays for my puppet theatre and we did a school magazine. It was noisy on old typewritting machine, I typed really quickly:]] Better opportunity was at the college.I landed a job as a sport journalist in age of 18 for one local newspaper and it came from there but it is still a hobby. I am not an author by profession.  I write scripts to documentaries and one feature movie now, there is always something to rewrite and it is time demanding with deadlines. I still do blogging and I am proud of my book of poems and lyrics to the songs. Some articles out but one of the best advices came to people I didn't know at the beginning of the career. USA people who were strict about whole package and forced me to stay my grounds but pay attention to glossy package and formatting for standing out from the crowd, couple of teachers, one from the university who was very good and asked us to think.
The trolls who try to mock or put you down or people who provide you with all sort of free advice how write and publish a book.. I also printed my poetry book on demands as self published writer and I sold out 500 pieces. The career of sport journalist in the print press and on radio was the best preparation regarding writing or preparing text. Good advice came also from my wish to contribute my historical articles based on biographies of famous women to fashion magazine. I tried and of course I didn't succeed as I wasn't a friend of the editorial team or known name but the editor in chief who later dated an actress replied back it was OK try for the article but I need to follow their rules for the series. It started with dramatical opening scene and the facts about the interesting woman followed.
I warmed to this idea when I typed my Queen Margot instead. It starts with the tournament scene where Margot's father Henry II dies. I have never met that editor but his advice was one of the best I got and funny enough I still stick with my idea to write series about interesting women from history, based on their real biographical facts.
What is your preferred genre?Fiction and memories or historical novels.
How many books have you written?  If more than one, are any a series…or trilogy?Just this one, except my book of poems Intersections of life and couple of short stories, some scripts now for documentaries and a lot of articles.
Tell us a little about your book.Margaret of Valois is forced into arranged marriage with Henry of Navarre, by her mother Catherine de Medici and cruel brothers who want to ceasefire between Catholics and Protestants during religious wars in France, but the wedding ends by St Bartholomew massacre and Margareth's life is from this time hanging up in the air, her destiny depends on decision of her brothers and a husband who doesn't love her. She survives by strong will, fierce intelligence where her lovers and friends are murdered, she is treated badly by her mother and brothers, later sent to exile by husband but she comes out as the winner, surviving all and dark age of intrigues, murders, passion, love in murky 16th century in France.
Do you have plans for a new book?Yes, I do. It is again about very independent, strong female character from history but she was very modest in this case. One is about Countess Norbertine Kinsky who was a relative of Countess Kinsky linked with Nobel and other book is about Margaret of Tudor. Perhaps one of the most underestimated woman in British history and I think her beloved grandson Henry ordered to murder her.
Is there an Author that you would really like to meet? Many of them, dead or living legends, I would need to book a banquet hall.
Was there an Author that inspired your writing? No. I like to be myself.
Do you plot or write by the seat of your pants? From the scratch or by the seat of my pants, with long preparation ahead, linked to collecting relevant historical facts.
Did you have an editor edit your books? No. I use Scrivener which often annoys me and I need put certain notes on the paper, but this program is helpful for formatting. I have a couple of friends who read certain parts of the book and tell me if they like it, but none of them has all manuscript to themselves. I am my the biggest critic and I read many times my manuscript, it has a lot of makeovers, erase and delete, trust me. I rewrite if I am not happy. It is like Saville Row tailoring:]]
Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?Hardcovers.
Where do you prefer to buy your books?I love bookshops, love them. I will spend ages browsing shelves with books. Everywhere, small indie shops, vintage shops or huge book shops.  I also like ebooks. Easy for travelling but a hardcover is a hardcover.
Are you a self- published (Indie) Author?Yes, I am a self published author with some outsourced help regarding distribution.
What books would you like to read again?I am lucky I still own my old library and I can get back to the books and read. It is true about my books from childhood, they are real gems and one of them was recently on my table by the bed. It is a story of little girl fighting cruel Winter and loving gardens and flowers. I wrote the script and it gets animation cover for short movie. I am excited about that. And I love cookbooks:]]
Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?I'd say a lot of books are difficult to convert into the films because they are about atmosphere but also a lot of quite boring books for children were used as adaptations for successful movies. I cannot say which movie I like over the book but I know I was scared more reading Nightmare on Elm Street book than watching the horror on TV screen because my imagination was wild, turning pages of the book late in night was creepy time for me. Also annoying movie was 50 shades of grey. It was a rom com to me, with added vitamin S and some techniques as dreamwork of middle aged writer. We know private life middle aged people and Middle Age which is time where my book is anchored in is real from that point. It is grey reality. I could choose basic plotline and many bed scenes as Margot was a lover than fighter, there is also an incest, but I am not that type of an author who will create new Game of Thrones series full of vitamin S and bloodbath even it was like that in history and intimate relationship between Margot and her bisex brother Henry III. It will be amazing for Hollywood production than simple plotline with 50 tunes of back vocals but I want to stick to history and Margot's brothers were weird enough and it is based on interesting history. I always think it is difficult to convert certain books into movies, even sci fi like Lord of Rings and it is film work I really like.
What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?All of them, a lot of them but I prefer hardbooks.
Who designed the cover of your book?I thought about the painting from 16th century and I picked up the portrait, pointing finger I want certainly this on my book cover but everything else is up to you. I am usually clear about my vision and requirements about website design, main colours and layout, but I let free reins in this case and the result by very talented web designer guy was smashing. My jaw dropped down how I was excited. I really love the golden element, it was his idea as well as frame and I really, really love it. I have also a cover for next book about Margaret of Beaufort called Chess Queen and I choose everything and also asked for many reviews of book cover design. I am happy with that now but it wasn't easy ride like with the cover of Queen Margot.  Maybe I should stick with the same graphic designer but I wanted different perspective and fresh look.  I daresay the designer of this book's cover is the best.
Do you find yourself intrigued by the cover of a book enough to buy it? The package and design sells, nice cover book catches your eyes but content is a king. Empty box is still empty box wrapped in glossy paper with golden ribbon on and rag mag is still a rag mag with the sexiest woman on the cover page.
Do you have any advice for other writers starting out?It will be a long list similar to roll of toilet paper what was is or is Jack Kerouac’s novel or typing by Jose Mourinho. I need to say Thank you to all pearls of wisdom as well as to my trolls and Arthur Landon calling me zero, which made me to push things to higher level of motivation. I am grateful for all sort of advice.
Do you write under a pen name?No and I have never thought about that. I am very proud of my name and origin.
Do you ever write in your PJ’s?Often. In chemises. I also sing on the loo and in the bathroom. When I was living in Chelsea, the sound of my singing reached apartments downstairs and they thought it was Catherine Jenkins. Actually no, I am not so plastic looking and they are perhaps happy the writing is quiet activity and the heydays of noisy typewrites are behind us:]]
What are your pet peeves? I’d go for Keanu Reeves, he is rock and roll with deep knowledge of Shakespeare and he was really funny at the premiere of Anvil in London where he was sitting by the aisle but running back and forth at the stage and very chatty. Sarah Brown, the wife of British PM attended unexpected like princess Margaret of Valois was checked during the wedding night and it was Prince William who proposed his princess of his heart Kate Middleton exactly two years after Anvil premiere , in Africa, giving big tip to Margaret in Kenya and his marriage seems to be happy one compared to arranged marriage between Margaret of Valois and Henry of Navarre. I’d say regarding spitting on Keanu Reeves or anyone I dislike trolls with huge scale of own issues who need to bully, abuse, insult, put people down. Other pet pee for me is noise, I cannot name next one because I am quite laid back and tolerant person who loves to left in peace.
You are trapped on a tropical island - who would you like to be stranded with? With myself and Alibaba or his helper to get me out. Certainly no with those exots from reality show I am apparently celebrity, get me out.
Pick one - Wine, Chocolate or shoes?I'm very similar to the lady across the sea from Australia regarding her big closet of footwear. I am an expert on wine but I don't smoke and I don't drink.
Cats or dogs?Dogs. Big barking dogs, no yappie ones. I sneeze from cats, my two cousins do as well. It is in the family. My aunt Marie Christine who also writes historical novels has trophy cats and she puts sign on the door Don't disturb at 7 or 8pm. It isn't mean she goes to the bed, it means it is her creative time. People are different, we are like cats and dogs.
Tell us about someone or something that just made your day -Small things make my day. Partner makes my day…unexpected nice things...
What is your favorite food and beverage?I have no favourite food but I prefer sweet and sour to sweet, but I love baking. I don't drink alcohol but every my friend will tell you I cannot live without a coffee.  Every morning routine - strong espresso, roast five, usually After dinner. A lot of cups during writing.
How many hours per day do you try to devote to research and writing? It depends on the type of writing. It varies with the book but scripts for documentaries are demanding and you really need to put effort and padlock to the laptop to type certain amount on daily basis. The research of the facts is very time consuming but if you have that I just sit and write and write.
What are 3 things you never leave home without (apart from keys, money and phone)? My brain and good mood. It is just two things.
Sleep in or get up early?Early bird except Sundays - long lay ins.
Laptop or desktop for writing?A laptop or a tablet. Both, with handwritten notes on the side.
Your favorite gadget?A phone and a laptop. Usually switched off over the nights and weekends. It's family and relax time.
Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?Anywhere and any time when I can and I have free time and place to do it.
Your thoughts on receiving book reviews - the good and the bad?If it is critical review based on the book and logical reasons I get it, it is a part of book publishing and marketing process. I dislike those personal attacks because certain people have self issues that's why need to abuse you or attack you for something irrelevant to the book like I am a stupid blonde or crazy woman, I was mocked with nasty trio who has never published anything worthy except their Twitter abuse of my person I can't speak and write. I take book reviews in daily press or magazine with ease. They aren't ripping you off, the beauty and love for you book is in the eyes of the beholder. I stand by my book but I don't know if it will be loved by critics or it will be a flop or hit with the readers. I did my best.
Do you have a bucket list?Yes I do but I don't follow the list like dog is chasing a bone.
One of your favorite quotes –many of them, they are a pearls of wisdom. I will mention just one Live with no excuses and love with no regrets.
List 3 of your favorite movies?I like to go to Cinema Renoir in London and couple of art theatres in NYC, I like indie movies and film noir than blockbusters. I cannot list just three favourite movies but if I can pick up a trio of film treasures for technique I'd highlight Rebecca which I like to watch over Halloween, Marketa Lazarova which is black and white movie known for lyrical expression and The Brief Encounter but there are many great movies. The list goes on...
What is a movie or TV show that you watched just recently and really enjoyed?I don't watch TV at all and my last visit to cinema was I think the restored film Red Shoes by British Film Institution. I should start planning a visit soon I just see many animation movies now because I am writing a script to feature movie for children.
Where can your readers stalk you?I'd rather to be left alone after my bad experiences with cyber stalking and stalking by one man which turned into really bad smear campaign and bullying where also people who have anything to do were involved. I like chatting with people but nice people who are interested in my work, in this case it is a book, and they know one or two things about me or the book than trying to belittle me because they have certain issues. I think if you are lucky or share similar interests with me, you can bump into me at events which are close to my heart and linked with my hobbies, at sports, in the library, in the theatre...I am quite active person.
Is your book in Print, ebook or both?In ebook format, available in many book outlets over the world, also in Australian indie book stores.
Do you give free ebooks away in exchange for honest reviews?
Yes.

About the book:
Gritty reality of the 16th century in France with love, passion, opulance sits side by side with dirty streets and intrigues is featured in the first historical novel Queen Margot by MBLW. The reader is instantly hooked by drama around Margaret of Valois, the daughter of famous Catherine de Medici, who survived all her three brothers kings and religious wars between Catholics and Hugenots. The book has good historical accuracy and smooth ride taking the reader into the world of intrigues similar to Game of Thrones. MBLW has good grip on the facts, writing skills and lightness to tell the story to everyone without knowing too much from history in similar way like David Attenborough. Perhaps Simon Sebag Montefiore has his successor waiting under the wings but young writer reminds more documentarist Attenborough who is able to make boring topic easy to digest and become popular. MBLW is big talent of historical fiction, filling knowledge about the period of the religious wars in France with vivid scenes than dry facts. The story pops up before our eyes and the characters are so raw, so strong that you cannot to help but feel as they do. MBLW weaves great storyline written by history and private life of Margot, she portraits her well, forcing the reader to be a bystander which was also a position of Margot in the turmoil of cruel years and the way which saved her life.  Read more HERE...

I appreciate everything you've ever done for me. Amelia Marie Whalen

I appreciate everything you've ever done for me.After our trip to Boston, I was torn between wanting to make every remaining day of Dave’s life an adventure and wanting to give up. Caring for him seemed overwhelming and unmanageable. He was like a man sized two-year-old. Despite the difficulty, I felt a responsibility to myself and to Dave to keep living and experiencing the world around us.I remembered it was summer. I remembered summer could be fun, and there were adventures to be had, so I accepted Sugar Shack Mike’s invitation to meet for rock climbing and camping on the south end of Lake George in the Adirondacks. I loaded Dave, a cooler, climbing gear, and camping gear into the car and headed north. We met Mike and Matt at the camp site. The spot was beautiful and the weather was perfect. I dragged towels and cushions and snacks over the short trail through the woods. Even with my arms loaded with cumbersome stuff, Dave had a hard time keeping up with me. He deliberately stepped over rocks and roots. He would stop to brush leaves or twigs from the trail.Despite his snail’s pace, Dave seemed eager to be in the wilderness. He looked up at the sky and around at the trees. Whenever I looked back to check his progress, he smiled at me.The trail ended at the lake, where Matt and Mike were reclined on a large flat platform rock. I set a cushion for Dave on the rock and he heaved a big sigh as he settled onto it. The short walk had worn him out.I chatted with my friends about the rock routes we had planned to climb that day. The sun was still rising and casting vibrant light through the clear blue sky and onto the lake. The lake was undisturbed. Small, even ripples reflected the sun in sparkly glints. Dave was mesmerized, watching the lake through squinted eyes. I was mesmerized watching him.Dave sat still for the first time I’d seen in months. His body and face were slack; the Adirondacks had melted his tension.I felt a great relief sitting with David. It was one of the first relaxing moments we’d shared since the whirlwind of his illness brought us to the psych ward. At home, David paced and fidgeted; he would wander off in the blink of an eye. At the lake, he was content to sit by the water. After sitting for an hour or so at the meeting place, it went without saying we weren’t going to climb. The walk to the cliff was uphill, rougher and longer than the short approach to the lake that had worn Dave out.Although David still referred to me as his wife and seemed most content at my side, it was unclear how much memory he retained or how much understanding he had about what was happening to him and around him. He would wander off if left unattended, didn’t speak unless spoken to, and didn’t seem able to form complete sentences.I asked Dave if he wanted to take a walk. He answered with a nod and I led us along the lake’s edge. The path was flat and easy, and openings in the trees gave us gorgeous views. David moved slowly and took in the scenery. This was one of the few times during that early summer that I felt as though things were OK. We were in a safe place, and both content. I was in one of my favorite places with one of my favorite people. Walking in the woods was difficult for Dave, but he pressed on. It seemed that he, too, was happy to be out adventuring. We walked along the lake side by side for a few minutes. I was matching Dave’s pace, expecting him to need to stop for a rest at any time. When he did stop, he reached out and turned me to face him. On that perfect June day, on the shore of a calm Lake George, we looked into each other’s eyes and stood close.Dave looked peaceful, yet determined, and cleared his throat.“I appreciate everything you’ve ever done for me,” he said. This was the first unprovoked statement David had made in months. It floored me to hear his voice form a complete sentence and it melted my heart to know he was aware.

Screenwriter Turned Author Mylo Carbia Releases Title of Debut Horror Novel

Screenwriter Turned Author Mylo Carbia Releases Title of Debut Horror Novel
Sources close to ‘The Queen of Horror’ Mylo Carbia have released the first draft cover and title of her upcoming book, “The Raping of Ava DeSantis.” Although the storyline is still under wraps, sources close to us say that the book tackles the aftermath of a college-based gang rape, spinning a classic horror story from the victim of that crime seeking justice.
Given the early controversy and buzz from horror fans across the globe (including Mylo’s 65,000 followers on Twitter) the book is rumored to have been picked up by a traditional publishing house and the release date may be moved up from early 2016 to right before Halloween.
Carbia has penned several independent horror films under her own name but is best known as Hollywood’s number one horror film ghostwriter. Her work most likely influenced by the fact that she spent the first 13 years of her life living in a haunted house in Jackson, New Jersey.
One early reviewer of the manuscript called it “A breathtaking story, fast-paced, insanely vivid Stay tuned for more details coming out this summer!

"The Best of Balling: March Madness" by Stacie Supple (18+)

Excerpt:
I stood in the hallway listening for Brad, my boyfriend to go to the kitchen. The loudness of the boys coupled with the sounds from the television made it difficult, but the darkness of the hallway also allowed me a partial visual of the family room without anyone detecting me.

As soon as Brad was gone, I sashayed into the room and stood in front of the big curved screen Samsung TV without a stitch of clothing.

“Which three of you want to go first?” I asked.

One by one they turned their attention to me until six sets of eyes stared back at me. The only sound in the room now was that of the announcer on the TV.

“Come on. Answer me. Which three of you want me first?” I said. “I've got three holes, and I am going to stand here and block your view of this god damned championship basketball game until I get some satisfaction.” I waved a bottle of anal lube in front of me.

As if they were kids still in high school, two of the guys sheepishly raised their hands.

Author Interview – Beth Prentice "Give Murder A Hand" – A Westport Mystery, Lizzie Book 2

Book Description from Amazon:Just when Lizzie thought the only problems she had in life were her crazy family and far too many nightmares, the house reveals yet another secret. This time it’s a skeleton in the back yard.  But the unusual thing about this skeleton is that it has an extra hand. Why?  Well that’s what Lizzie wants to find out. But nothing is that easy is it?Plus her drop dead gorgeous boyfriend Riley’s had enough of her nightmares and wants her to get professional help. Only when that professional help comes in the form of a long legged blonde who just happens to be Riley’s ex-girlfriend, Lizzie feels reluctant to reveal her deepest, darkest fears.  Especially when her deepest, darkest fear is losing Riley to a long legged blonde ex-girlfriend. But this blonde seems to have a particular interest in Lizzie’s life.  Is it just Riley she’s after? Or is there another reason she always seems to be around whenever Lizzie’s life is in danger?
Near misses with death, a super hot policeman with a crush, Grandma’s new boyfriend, a garden full of senior citizens, and Bradley the owner of Westport Tours, all make Lizzie’s life interesting to say the least.
But can she find the truth before the For Sale sign gets hammered into the ground? Or will Lizzie take the secrets to an early grave?

What is your preferred genre? Anything fun really but romance/mystery is my favourite.
How many books have you written?  This is the second full novel in this series and is a sequel to It Started With A House, but I also have a Christmas novella that follows Lizzie.  Westport is a busy town though, and my other full length novel, Killer Unleashed, follows another resident named Chloe.

Do you have plans for a new book? Yes!  I love Lizzie and Riley and have already started work on their next adventure
Is there an Author that you would really like to meet? Many, but my absolute favourites would be Gemma Halliday, Janet Evanovich and Sophie Kinsella
Was there an Author that inspired your writing? Yes.  All of the above
Do you plot or write by the seat of your pants?I have an outline of where I’d like the story to go, but generally I fill in the blanks by the seat of my pants
Did you have an editor edit your books?Yes.  The wonderful Juanita Kees, Kees2Create.com
Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover? All of them!!

Are you a self- published (Indie) Author? Yes but I also have a publisher for some of the series

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version? No.  I love movies but books always tell more of the story.
What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)? I’m currently reading Gemma Halliday’s latest Deadly in High Heels and this one is an ebook, but I’m waiting impatiently for the new book from Janet Evanovich in the Wicked series
Who designed the cover of your book? The wonderful Patti Roberts J
Do you find yourself intrigued by the cover of a book enough to buy it?Definitely.  If I don’t like the cover I probably won’t look any closer at it

Do you ever write in your PJ’s?Ha ha.  Of course.  Doesn’t everyone??

You are trapped on a tropical island - who would you like to be stranded with?Do you want my real life answers or my fantasy answers? JReal life – my husband of course, but in my fantasy I’d love to be stranded with Ranger from the Stephanie Plum series.  Even though he’d probably get us off the island a little bit too quickly!
Pick one - Wine, Chocolate or shoesNo question – Chocolate!!
Cats or dogs? Both but dogs first
How many hours per day do you try to devote to research and writing?I try to do at least six, but sometimes I’m really motivated and do more. Then again sometimes I procrastinate and don’t do much other than google my favorite authors, check out the local real estate market and maybe peruse eBay!
What are 3 things you never leave home without (apart from keys, money and phone)?Lipgloss is about it
Laptop or desktop for writing? Mostly desktop but I do have my laptop for those days where I feel like going to the beach

Your thoughts on receiving book reviews - the good and the bad –I love book reviews.  It’s really encouraging to hear what people really think of your books.  Even the bad ones have a purpose.  Sometimes they highlight something you may have not noticed.  So long as they’re not mean of course.
Do you have a bucket list? Not really.  I have a few holidays that I want to take but that’s about it.

List 3 of your favorite movies? While you were sleeping (I love Sandra Bullock – this movie just makes me happy), The Avengers (for the eye candy of course) and Blindside
What is a movie or TV show that you watched just recently and really enjoyed?I’m a bit of a man really.  One of my favourite shows is American Restoration! I love the way they bring old things back to life.
Where can your readers stalk you? My website – bethprentice.com or facebook
Is your book in Print, ebook or both?Ebook at the moment but it will soon be available in print also

Served Hot by Annabeth Albert

In Portland, Oregon, the only thing hotter than the coffee shops, restaurants, and bakeries are the hard-working men who serve it up—hot, fresh, and ready to go—with no reservations…
Robby is a self-employed barista with a busy coffee cart, a warm smile, and a major crush on one of his customers. David is a handsome finance director who works nearby, eats lunch by himself, and expects nothing but “the usual”—small vanilla latte—from the cute guy in the cart. But when David shows up for his first Portland Pride festival, Robby works up the nerve to take their slow-brewing relationship to the next level. David, however, is newly out and single, still grieving the loss of his longtime lover, and unsure if he’s ready to date again. Yet with every fresh latte, sweet exchange—and near hook-up—David and Robby go from simmering to steaming to piping hot. The question is: Will someone get burned?

Short Excerpt (200 words):A little idea niggled at my brain—like an evil elf had tapped me on the shoulder. “You know, if you give me your card, I could call you if you leave your wallet behind again.”There. His cheeks went dusky pink. I finally got a blush out of him, but hell if I could decipher what it meant. I could predict people’s taste in coffee, down to preferred syrup flavor, but I still sucked at decoding anything as complex as human emotions.“Ah. Um.” He did the nervous cough thing again.“Never mind.” I wiped my hands on my apron. “I’d better get back.”“Wait.” He opened the wallet, plucked out a white card with a blue logo, and offered it to me. His broad fingers brushed mine again as he handed it over. Another barely there touch, but I felt the charge all the way down my spine, like I’d chugged a triple shot.My breath tripped with wishing he’d add a “call me anytime.” Brian would have. But David just stood there silently. Straighter than the Fremont Bridge and denser than a concrete pylon.
Long Excerpt (600 words):My nooner was late. Well, technically, David was my 11:50. Without fail, ten minutes before twelve every work day, David P. Gregory bought a vanilla latte from my coffee cart in the Old Emerson building in Portland. I only knew his name because he used his debit card to pay, and I knew the time because of the old-fashioned, massive brass clock directly across the atrium from my cart.I knew David banked at a local credit union, knew that he worked somewhere that required a tie, knew that he had a smile that made his mouth crinkle up at the edges when I handed him his coffee, and knew that he was an excellent tipper. What I didn’t know was whether or not he was straight. We’d had this weird dance for months now—he’d arrive for his coffee, stilted and uncomfortable, relax into a bit of small talk while I made his drink, and then he’d take his coffee to one of the metal tables out in the atrium to have with the lunch he packed in a blue bag. I liked watching him eat because he gave it his entire focus—no smart phone or gadget, no newspaper or book, no folder of work. A few times I’d caught him looking back in my direction. But his gaze never lingered and either my flirting while I served him was more subtle than I’d thought or he was simply immune.Today David was late. Unexpected disappointment uncurled in my stomach, souring my caffeine buzz. It was a good day—a steady stream of customers at my cart and bustling business for the pizza place and the vegan sandwich bar on the other side of the atrium. The hundred-year-old office building had been renovated to include a few small eateries in the newly added skylit atrium. Plenty for me to look at, but my eyes kept returning to the double brass doors that opened onto Ninth.David pushed through the heavy doors at 12:45 just as I was finishing up a caramel soy latte for one of the Goth girls who worked at the jewelry place across the street. I hid my smile behind my espresso machine. Eager for it to be his turn, I tapped my toes against the linoleum.“The usual?” I figured it would freak him out if I mentioned I’d noticed his lateness.“Hmmm.” He studied my specials sign. I’d glued a chalkboard panel inside a silver frame from a secondhand place on Hawthorne and put the whole thing on a silver-painted easel. Classy on the cheap.Today I had a half-price tuxedo mocha—white chocolate with dark chocolate swirls. David had never paid any attention to the sign before, but today he gave it a long stare, consideration tugging his mouth back and forth. God, I loved his mouth—full pink lips, a hint of stubble on his upper lip like he’d missed a spot shaving. After a few seconds, he shrugged, broad shoulders rippling the fine cotton of his dress shirt. “Yeah. The usual.”“Sure thing.” I grabbed the cup for his small vanilla latte.“Wait.” He held up a hand as I started to ring him up. “Iced. It’s sweltering out.” He’d rolled up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt, revealing muscular forearms and a heavy silver, antique-looking watch.“Meaning it’s eighty-five degrees in Portland and everyone is freaking out. You know . . . it’s good to try something different once in a while.”
********

Can David change his regular order to include a side of sexy? You’ll find out in Served Hot!

Lee Savino, author of Raven and Wolf

ABOUT THE BOOK: When a mysterious evil slaughter's a village in old Norway, a warrior vows to protect the innocent woman who witnessed the murders. But can he help her stop the killers while hiding his own dark secret?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Lee Savino has been telling tales since she was young. While she was studying creative writing at Hollins University, her first manuscript won the Hollins Fiction Prize. She loves writing books about strong women and the sexy men who love them.

Book review:5.0 out of 5 stars  Not my typical type of book...but I LOVED it!! By Tammy HFormat:Kindle EditionEverything about this book makes it not the type I typically read so I was hesitant and ready to be completely uninterested. I read it anyways and it definitely proves "you can't judge a book by its cover (or subject)!" I was drawn in from the very first chapter, all the way through to the end! It is so well written I felt as though I was another character in the book, standing by silently, watching the story unfold. I'm excited to read Lee Savino's new series.
I highly recommend this book, even if it's "not your type!"

Conversations with Culture Blitz - Nick Dee

Nick Dee is an East Coast based writer and public speaker. His "Live YOUR Life" blog went viral this past winter, and more recently his following blog titled "Fifty Shades Of DisIllusion" has generated its own share of attention.
He now spreads his message through his new writings and public speaking. His official website can be found here: https://officialnickdee.wordpress.com/
James Gonzalez (Culture Blitz): "Live Your Life" is probably the piece your most known for, you've said yourself that it jumpstarted all of this for you in many ways. Explain it. What is "Live Your Life"? What does it mean?
Nick Dee (Live YOUR Life): Basically, 'Live YOUR Life' is a movement I started, and a message I'm trying to put out there. Inspired by my experiences and everything I detailed in the original blog that got so much play. When I decided to do what I did and really take control of my own life, the way I detailed in that original piece, it was an extremely powerful change for me, and I think other people can experience the same feeling.
Culture Blitz: How did that specific phrase become the motto?
Nick Dee: I had this 3,000 word blog, and I needed a title for. And I realized there was one phrase I used in it, only once, that just sounded right: Live Your Life. That was my reminder to myself and my call to everyone else. To live the life you want to live, do the things you want to do. To question each day if you're doing because you want to do it, or because its what you think you're supposed to do. It doesn't have to mean be all and only about yourself, you can do things for other people, and make sacrifices for other people. We all have people to answer to. But do something at least that is completely your own.
Culture Blitz: It tackles a variety of subjects as you go through your personal journey. How do you find people have responded? Has anyone misinterpreted the message?
Nick Dee: By in large people get the message. It's awesome. People are free to interpret it as they please. But it bothers me that there are some people who misunderstand my message in 'Live Your Life' as: only do things that are fun. Everyone shouldn't quit their job. Everyone shouldn't drop out of college. It's not about just having fun, or doing things you really feel like doing 24/7. It's having a plan. Whether that plan is relaxing and experiencing life, studying extremely hard to get the degree you want, or working overtime to get what you want, or get where you want to be. All of those things can be equally purposeful, and equally purposeless.  It's about owning your life, and owning that plan, not just running a course and picking a direction because it's "a direction", or because it makes other people happy. Do not just what makes you happy, but what will continue to make you happy as time wears on.
Culture Blitz: More recently you wrote "Fifty Shades Of Disillusion", which juxtaposed the fictionalized portrayal in 'Fifty Shades of Grey'  with your real life experiences with BDSM. This might have been the most personal of all your blogs. How do you feel about the response that has received, and how some of those who have shared it have taken to calling you the "real life Christian Grey" after you seemingly spoke out so strongly against that very idea?
Nick Dee: That is kind of ironic. It was just a topic that was in the news, and I figured I'd share my real life experiences with the lifestyle, which weren't exactly positive, as far the toll it took on me, and the people it brought into my life. The blog sort of took on a life of its own with the release of the movie and everything. As far as the comparisons, it used to bother me alot, but now I just laugh it off. I don't think I'm ever going to shed it completely, so why not embrace it and talk about it?
Culture Blitz: Have You Always written?
Nick Dee: I've always written in some form or another. It's safe to say that any girl who's ever dated me has gotten some lengthy romantic letters at some point, even back in high school, maybe grade school. I had the  first itch for it even back in 6th grade, but I remembers the teachers discouraged me from writing because they focused so much on the technicalities of outlines, sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar. They wiped all the fun, and creativity out of it. I hated structure. At the same time, they had no idea the world we were all heading into with word processors, and autocorrect just a few years later. I didn't get back into it until a few years later.
Culture Blitz: There is a certain swagger to your writing. Individuality. Where does that come from?
Nick Dee: Well I've read alot of things like anyone else. I read other blogs and content people would share on social media. Some were good, some were bad, but most of them were very bland with no personality to them. It was like it may as well have been written by a google robot. I don't know how to write that way. And anyone who knows me, can hear me while reading my writing. And even if they dont know me, they can probably get a sense. When your reading me, it's all things I would say.  The things I write are basically like spoken word that gets typed out, refined once or twice, and then put out there. I don't like to constantly edit myself.
Culture Beat: What about reading? Would you say that you are a reader?
Nick Dee: Definitely. I always read everything I could get my hands on. I had a giant bookshelf of at least 100 books by the time I was in high school. I got rid of alot of them recently to make space. Now I have a giant iBooks library on my iPad. I'm starting to miss reading the physical books themselves though. if I had to choose a favorite book it would probably be The Great Gatsby.
Culture Blitz: How would you best define your niche? 'Motivational' is a word that gets thrown alot, but you don't seem to have totally embraced it?
Nick Dee: If I say something motivational, that's great. I love motivational things myself. But my intention isn't to motivate. Maybe self improvement is more what it is. Self-improvement is important to me. Self-improvement for me is a reason to live. It's a reason to wake up in the morning. To get out of bed and say 'I'm gonna do better than I did yesterday'.  Mind, body, and soul, there's always room for improvement. At this stage in my personal life, I'm only interested in curious people who want to learn, grow, think outside the box, and aren't under some illusion they have it all figured out. So I think the audience comes from that place for the most part.
Culture Blitz: You've said before that you are not a fan of another inspirational figure on social media, Trent Shelton. Why?
Nick Dee: It's not a personal thing, obviously. That's why I said not a "fan".  I admire anybody who made a living at following their passion, trying to do something uplifting. His following is huge, I mean he was a former NFL player. To be blunt, I think he's 90% cliches. I think his expertise is telling people what they want to hear, disguised as "tough talk". There's alot of that out there, telling people what they want to hear.  I don't wanna target just him. I think that may make him or put him in more of a "motivational" or "inspirational" category than I am. And I'm fine with that. I'm not here to tell people what they want to hear, my goal is to speak the truth as I know it first and foremost, and to tell people what they need to hear second. And I'm not saying there are not some people who need that simplified message exactly how he puts it. But I feel like, when you are ready to go a bit deeper, you come to me. At least I hope so.
Culture Blitz: 'Simplified' means dumbed down to you in essence doesn't it?
Nick Dee: On some level, yes. But at the same time, it's completely necessary I guess. There's levels to this, to everything.
Culture Blitz: What motivates you to write, besides promoting your brand and helping people?

Nick Dee: Well, my  dad was always sort of the strong, silent type. Which was totally fine in many ways as a father,  I'll take that type over alot of others, I think he set a great example, but basically he was the kind of persons who left more questions than answers growing up. I don't want that to be said for me. I dont wanna leave more questions than I do answers. I want my thoughts, experiences, and story out there.
