Get the word out-vanity presses, assisted self pub, etc.
So one of the ways to help inform aspiring writers about the problems with vanity presses, 'assisted self publishing', etc is to get the word out.
One way to get the word out is get the info higher up on the search engines…right?
So maybe those of who have talked about the pitfalls should link to each other. Those who have interested in the discussion could also link to the posts. That's how search engines work, right? the more links to a site, the more hits, the higher it moves on search...

An experiment
So with all the hubbub about self publishing, assisted (cough, cough) self publishing and vanity publishing, I decided to do an experiment. Granted, I kind of cheated. This book had already been written and published in a print anthology, but it was with non-exclusive rights, which means if I decide to put it elsewhere, I can.
And so I did. At smashwords. here.
Hunter's Choice
Be warned… this is a SHORT story. But it's also a cheap price.

Agent Appreciation Day
So apparently, according to twitter, today is agent appreciation day.
Let me say…
See more LOLcats|
I love my agent. Ms. Irene Goodman of the Irene Goodman Literary Agency is wonderful. She handles my mini-crisises, my BIG crisises (is that a word) and my paranoias, and she does it without blinking or making me feel silly.
She's awesome.

Guest blogger…Jana Oliver on Self Publishing
Since the internets are still kinda buzzing about the 'assisted self pub' hoopla with Author Solutions/Harlequin Horizons/Dellarte Press, I wanted to discuss self publishing a bit more in depth…but being lazy, I didn't want to do all the resarch myself, so I found a fellow RWA member who has some experience in self publishing.

Self-publishing vs. "Assisted" Self Publishing/Vanity Press
Everybody, please bear in mind, I'm no self-publishing expert. I'm not too educated on it, and that's fine with me because self publishing looks like a hell of a lot of work.
If you want to self publish, be prepared to do that hell of a lot of work.
Or, you can spent a lot more money for 'assisted' self publishing and have to split the profits. Since you're fronting a lot of money, and since the majority of 'assisted' self pubs/vanity press books don't tend to sell a lot…well, I'm thinking...
Widget me
Are you a widgety-sort of person?
I want a widget.
But the problem is when I start messing with widgets, I spend way too much time on them. Plus, I'm not particularly good at them.
So…. maybe somebody else can widget me. I want a widget for my romantic suspense BROKEN, due out in March 2, 2010.
Would you like to make me a widget and get entered into a contest for an ARC of BROKEN? If so… make me a widget. If you want to design the widget using something like sprout (or similiar) that's...
