Night Blade…coming to Kickstarter

For those who enjoy my Kit books, you know this book. The tear-jerker.

The heartbreaker.

The one that might have made you hate me a little.

Well, it’s time to commemorate all of that in glorious, illustrated hardcover. And my, oh, my, how glorious that hardcover is going to be. Behold the artwork.

Night Blade Kickstarter cover: shows a young woman in black, holding a sword. She's set against a snowy, grim background, holding a sword with the tip to the ground while kneeling. Her face is battered and cut, with a couple of streaks of blood. The title reads

Isn’t that cover stunning? My artist, Kmochi, is a genius.

The Night Blade Kickstarter will have tiers offering the expanded book in ebook, trade paperback and case hardback and it will contain at least four black and white illustrations.

This title will feature a bonus chapter, as the previous book did, that will only be available to my Kickstarter backers. Stretch goals will include foiled bookmarks, additional interior illustrations and more.

You can follow the project here so you know when it goes live.

And if you’re somebody who enjoys crowdfunding campaigns, or if you like my Pretern Wars series, you can check out my September project with Backerkit…The Pretern Wars Omnibus, which will feature A Prime’s Passion, A Dragon’s Desire and A Killer’s Claiming, an all-new story written just for this omnibus!

Art below! it’s amazing, done by Millikodea15

shows a mermaid in the water with a burning city skyline in the distance. She has blue hair and holds a trident in one hand.

If you want to follow along, just visit the page and hit follow!

And Blade’s End has been FREED

Again, let me tell you that I’m sorry.

Before I start sounding like a broken record…

Let me post this live footage of me on release day. You’re the first to see it.

Deadpool and Wolverine - image from the fight scene when Deadpool leaps from the bus, then falls flat on his face.

Yep. They’re never gonna forget that dismount.

Anyway… the issue is now fixed. I know how to get it corrected on Amazon if the file didn’t automatically update.

For AmazonYou will need to be signed in and make sure you know which device you want the book sent to. You can find that here (once you’re logged in.) This link takes you to Amazon’s digital console. You can find which devices Kindle is installed on-it looks like the most recent is on top from what I’ve checked.Once you know which device you want the book sent to, get the order number. You can find that under digital orders. This link should get you there. Now… the rest are from my posts on bsky. If your file didn’t update, go here. In the box, type in *TALK TO AN ASSOCIATE* (this will bypass the chatbots.)Once an associate is in the chat, tell them the book was incomplete & the corrected version has been uploaded. Can the associate please push the updated file thru to your library? I had it done & the file is a-ok!For Kobo

I’m not sure of the process here, but you can contact customer service here. Scroll to the bottom.

For Play Bookstore

Go to the book’s page and click on the ? icon near the top of the page.

For BN

The Help page is here. Make sure you get the order number, available in your account details.

iBooks/Apple Books

This one, I’m having a harder time with. I don’t buy many books from the Apple bookstore, but I found this link.

If there are any other platforms…

Or if you have no luck with the platform you purchased from, drop a comment or feel free to email me at shilohwalker@gmail.com. Please include the platform you purchased from and the email address associated with that account. I’ll forward to my distributor and see if they can reach out to their contacts.

Thank you, again, for your patience and understanding.

Blade’s End – announcement & apologies – Update, updated

Update below

Okay, first up, I am so sorry. This is completely my error.

I’m aware there’s an issue with the file of Blade’s End. I found out toward the end of the work day yesterday afternoon. I reuploaded the right file and sent a follow-up email to my distributors to make sure they could push the file through to the ebook platforms – Kindle/Kobo/etc. They did let me know it is showing Amazon’s end, but I don’t know if it takes longer to populate, even if they show that Amazon has received it. I’m assuming it must, because it’s going on twenty-four hours since I became aware of the problem. And if it’s that situation at one, it will likely be the same at the others.

As soon as I get an update, I’ll post it here.

If you still want the book, there’s no need to return it as the file itself should update once it populates throughout the system.

Again, I’m really sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t post here earlier, but I was having issues logging into my website.

FYI, for those who want to be updated as soon as I have news, click on the subscribe button on the blog.

Hello… Okay, I heard from the team at my distributor.

This is what I was told.

This updated file has now successfully processed on Amazon and is the one correctly feeding out. When people purchase an older file, sometimes they have to reach out to the Kindle team to have the newest file refed to their device if it doesn’t update automatically.

To receive assistance from the Kindle Customer team contact the following:

To contact Kindle via phone: http://www.amazon.com/clicktocall

To contact Kindle via chat: http://www.amazon.com/clicktochat

I’m so sorry this has been such a hassle. I’d thought the file would automatically update, but it doesn’t seem to be the case for most people.

Additionally:

I’ve been advised it could take up to 48 hours for the process to complete. I’d say I’m sorry again, but I think I sound like a broken record at this point.

Update to the update

With links and suggestions. I’d advise waiting until Wednesday night or Thursday. This will let the files work their way through the platform.

To receive assistance from the Kindle Customer team contact the following:

To contact Kindle via phone: http://www.amazon.com/clicktocall

To contact Kindle via chat: http://www.amazon.com/clicktochat

FYI: This process will probably take about 24-48 hours to work through the system. If the file doesn’t update by tomorrow night or THURSDAY: contact Amazon.

When you contact them via chat, scroll to the bottom and look for ‘chat with admin’ or something to that effect. Select an option along the lines of ‘problem with order’. You’ll need to talk to a person, but it makes you go through the steps. So it will try to make you search for the item. Grab the last four numbers of the order from your ‘digital orders’ – you should be able to find the option here on the menu once you log in. https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/order-history?ref_=abn_yadd_ad_your_orders

The chatbot STILL won’t be able to find the orders, but then you should be able to see an option for ‘still need help’? Then you get the option to ‘chat with an associate’. That’s what you need.

Tell them the author is an idiot and the file you received was wrong.
You need the updated file pushed through to your device.
They’ll want the correct device. You can find THAT info here, once you’re logged in.
https://www.amazon.com/hz/mycd/digital-console/devicedetails?deviceFamily=KINDLE_APP
Do not get off the chat until you’ve checked.

FYI, I will update on social media AND my blog when I know the files are correctly distributing.

And yes, you can honestly tell them I’m an idiot.

Bye twitter, hello Bluesky and Netgalley

I deleted my twitter account. And no, I’m still not calling it by THAT name.

I should have done it a while ago, but… it’s done now and I have no regrets. I’m on bluesky – handle is shilohwalker.bsky.social.

I’ve actually been there a while and kinda sorta forgot. One thing I love about it?

You can pre-block entire lists of people. Like trolls and Nazis. That’s awesome, right? There are a ton of romance-centric folks already there, so woo-hoo!

Bye-bye, twitter, hello, bluesky.

Bears & Blades, Blades & Bears

It’s all the Bs this months, y’all. And hey, it’s spooky season, so we can toss in some boos, too.

Okay, so, a couple of things… I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this but over the …oh, six months, I’ve had some…we’ll say revelations. One of them involves me coming to grips with the fact that I’m autistic. No, I’m needing advice, pats on the back, etc, etc, etc. My doctor and I have talked, I’m talking to a counselor, etc. It is what it is and for women my age (48), it’s not uncommon for a diagnosis to happen at this point in time. When I was a kid, doctors mostly didn’t ‘see’ how differently autism presented in kids who presented as female as opposed to those who presented as male. We ‘tend’ to be quieter, lost in books and other things–I don’t want to generalize, because that’s not what this post is about.

BUT… as I’m learning more about why certain things always worked for me while other things never did, I’m trying to develop habits, etc.

One of them????

BULLIT POINT LISTS!

SO. TODAY’S LIST!

I just realized you can use my blog as a newsletter thingNews on Blade’s EndThere’s something new coming to my PatreonDid you miss Choosing the Bear ?

First up, if you’re not on my newsletter list, you might have missed the update. If you want to sign up for the newsletter, it’s here… or you can just sign up for my very irregular blog updates, which will eventually tell you the same thing. That space is in the widget area where it says SUBSCRIBE. Or… maybe…here, too. Hey, it worked.

BLADE’S END, the final book in the Kit Colbana series is up for pre-order.

The blurb:

Blade’s End
It’s all coming to a bitter end

Kit and her lover, Damon, the Alpha of the Southern Cat Clans, are hot on the trail of Madae, an ancient entity that has haunted Kit’s people through the ages. Kit was supposed to be the next target, but she proved to be tougher than Madae expected.

As both an act of revenge and expediency, Madae went for the next nearest of kin…Kit’s cousin, Doyle.

Earth-shattering truths are revealed and secrets laid bare, including secrets that threaten the love between Kit and Damon, and their very lives.

They’re determined to find Madae and save Doyle.

But will those secrets drive them apart?

Will those secrets drive them mad?

And when they find themselves confronting not one ancient evil, but two, will Kit and Damon be strong enough to save Doyle?
Or will one of them pay the ultimate price?

Author Note: It’s recommended you read the short story CHANG before reading BLADE’S END

Super short snippet:

“She’s the one who took possession of my grandmother,” Kit said woodenly. Her eyes had a glassy sheen to them and she stared at nothing. “Lemera…Damon, Lemera…her true name is Lemeraties. She lived back when the Roman Empire was still going strong. The name of her queen was Madae—and it’s possible some…entity possessed Madae during Lemeraties’s lifetime or shortly before.”

“I think it’s more than possible,” Chang said quietly.

I whipped my head around and stared at him, hard.

He lifted a brow. “I’m almost certain she’s one of Azazel’s offspring—Azazel is the very last of the Deathless, Damon. I’ve been hunting him for nearly as long as I’ve been alive. But that isn’t what I need to tell you.”

The end of an era, for me

Finishing up this last Kit book has been bittersweet. I started the series in 2012, if I remember correctly. I never expected readers to love it as much as they did.

No, it hasn’t been as popular as books out there, but it’s been one of my most popular and I know it’s meant a lot to many people. I know that, because many of you have told me. Kit has meant a lot to me. While I haven’t experienced nowhere the level of trauma she has, there are correlations between us that I can’t deny.

That’s why, after I lost my brother, I couldn’t write any of her stories for a while. She cut too deep. But, hey, that’s Kit. Always good with a blade.

Writing a series and publishing it independently can be a gamble. If you don’t make some money on it, unless you’re independently wealthy, or at least a lot better off than most authors, me, included, just isn’t something you can keep doing.

But my Kit readers have been so supportive. And you proved that again and again, through your patience, by supporting me through my Patreon, through your emails, and through backing the special edition of Blade Song I released on Kickstarter in July. WOW. The support for that was phenomenal.

You all have been so wonderful during this journey with Kit. Thank you. Truly. From the bottom of my heart.

It’s not always possible for an author to finish a series, especially a long-standing one, the way we want to, but because of your support, I was able to tell Kit’s story on my own terms. And I’m forever grateful.

BUT… FYI … don’t think I’m done with UF

AS IF.

I have other ideas floating around in my head, but for the time being, due to other projects, some are on the back burner.

However, one will be a subscriber-exclusive for my Patreon members. I’m in the process of updating how memberships tiers there work, because, hey, Apple is greedy and wants 30% of the take, regardless and it’s forcing changes on Patreon, and therefore, creators, but if you want to join in, now is the time. The new journey starts in January.

We covered the blades. We covered the blurb. We covered the Patreon. Oh, right.

NOW IT IS TIME FOR BEARS.

My Backerkit campaign for I CHOOSE THE BEAR kicked ass, y’all.

We are getting:

eight custom illustrationscustom chibi artinterior illustrated mapdustjacket for the hardcovercustom printed endpapersfoil bookmarksthe illustrated ebook

These are the bells and whistles that go along will every print copy, which you can still preorder But only up until February-ish. After that, the pre-order link goes down and the special edition book is no more.

I Choose the Bear WILL be up on retailer sites for pre-order in 2025, but it will not be the illustrated version. If you want that, you should preorder now! You can order the case hardback with a custom-designed dustjacket and hand-sprayed edges for $65 or get the book without the sprayed edges for $35. Alternatively, you can also pre-order the trade paperback for $20.

Oi. Skimming this very long update…and I think I got it all.

I think.

In five minutes, I’ll realize i forgot something and decide to just include with the next one. Which I will promptly forget.

Would you choose the bear?

I’m sure you’ve heard the question. Would you rather be alone in the forest with a man…or a bear?

We heard the question. Many of us got the point. I mean, a bear is likely to be as afraid of you as you are of it. And you can be trained on how to act with a bear.

We saw the discussions.

We saw the memes.

And I saw this meme.

Shows a bear sitting at a picnic table. Like a person. Text reads,

And, like writers everywhere when something stimulates that writing gland (yes, that’s totally a thing-I’m a nurse, I know), I had AN IDEA.

It involves a woman and a boyfriend who turns out to be a total asshole…and the bear (shifter) who stumbles onto the scene and turns everything upside down.

Right now, I’m still writing the book. But it’s going to be a Backerkit project and you can be one of the first to read…MONTHS before anybody else.

purple background, featuring gold elements, including the title I CHOOSE THE BEAR and a gold bear wearing sunglasses.

Pledge levels include the book in hardback (available nowhere else), name a pet or character tier and handmade rewards, made by yours truly.

Check it out now and follow along to be notified when it goes live.

And guys… I haven’t been excited for a book like this since the first Kit book came out. I love these characters.

Newbie Tips For Kickstarter

I wish I’d seen some of these, so here…

Learn, educate, read and don’t just dive right in. Those are some of the big ones. tips, but here are a few more, just from my brief experience. I spent three months in the FB group I joined just working on building my launch page and learning and then I was in a pre-launch (sort of like a pre-order, but for gathering followers) from the end of May (IIRC) until my campaign started around July 11.

Thought bubble with the text: Where do I even start?Join Kickstarter for Authors if you’re not already a member. (A lot of the below will not make sense if you haven’t already started learning about Kickstarter campaigns.)Tell your family your brain is going to be temporary hiatus for much of the time period. Yes, for real. If you’re used to working on deadline, think of it like that.Have food you can prepare without a lot of thought/prep—both meals and snacks. And consider the length of your campaign. It’s not as bad once the first few days pass, but then the anxiety ramps up again near the end and you want to check/refresh every 30 minutes…or more. Doing that, working on other projects and/or your day job while juggling everything else is…a lot. Make it easy on yourself.Don’t have it end in the middle of the day. My thinking…I really wanted a glass of wine. And mine ended at 11am.Don’t plan anything extra during that time frame. Seriously. Don’t.Don’t over-anticipate how much you might make.Use a spreadsheet (Google sheets is simple and basic) and figure out the costs of what you’re going to need to spend to create your products AND handle shipping. Don’t forget boxes.Figure out your printers/options ahead of time so you can decide which you want beforehandUse  your art. It’s great for making graphics in Canva, etc. But make sure you have the proper rights to use it.Read/Follow other KS campaigns. I cannot stress this enough.
