The sun no longer shone canary yellow. It hadn’t done so for years. Instead, it glared down, obstinate, punishing—beet red, like the garden tomatoes that no longer existed. It stood guard over the desert-dry water taps that had likewise fallen prey to the relentless heat, even in mid-October. Livermore, California had been a town set on rolling hills, swathed in green grass and fragrant orange poppies. Now, each day played out like the one before it: sun, heat, illness, death.

On that particular day, relative calm engulfed them. Only a few trails of smoke rose up in the distance toward the west and the Oakland Hills. Usually it was worse—the smoke was more like the dense cloud of marine fog that used to roll in daily. Now, the arid air, once fresh with coastal mist and the scent of eucalyptus trees mixed with wild lavender and rosemary, smelled like burning hay. The sun’s transition from an earthly asset to man’s most vicious foe had been going on for decades, but you would never have known it. It had caught humanity ill-prepared. Those who once had awaited its daily arrival now despised its very existence.

Scientists had a word for it; scientists had a word for everything. They called it a Red Giant, a star that had exhausted the supply of hydrogen at its core and had switched to thermonuclear fusion. As a result, the Earth found itself baking, its waters evaporating, and humanity’s extinction imminent. No scientist or politician could explain why the sun had made such a drastic transformation; nor did it matter.

In the distance, the sound of a laboring sixteen-wheeler lumbering up the road startled James as he popped up from his sleep. Scanning the room, he breathed out his relief. Everybody’s okay, he thought, checking out their California king bed. For a brief moment, he recalled his dream, in which he had been frolicking with his brother along the beaches of Lake Erie, near where they had grown up. But, instead of laughing, shouting, and swimming in cool waters, he was perspiring. Sweat soaked the bed and stained his shirt and underwear. His mouth felt and dry.

What’s the truck doing here at this hour?

The clanking of the massive tires hitting the potholes brought him back to reality. Rising cautiously, he kicked into the nightstand and let out a yelp, awakening their infant, who began to cry.

“What is it?” his wife asked.

“Nothing. Just the water truck. Go back to sleep.”

His thirteen-year-old son, Silas, was now awake as well and was scanning the room with his eyes. His long blond hair was matted down against his boyish face and, despite his sleep, he still looked extremely fatigued. He was irritated not only at the unrelenting heat and his sister’s cries, but also that he woke up in the same depressing room where they almost always stayed. Sometimes he hoped his life was just a nightmare that he would someday wake up from. Looking around, he saw walls stacked with cardboard boxes, dirty clothing on the floor, and dirt-stained sheets on the bed in which he was lying. The two windows in the room were covered in a thick film of dust and sand. A loaded rifle and handgun were on a box next to the bed.

“Can someone keep her quiet?” Silas grumbled as he looked toward his crying infant sister, Charlotte. “It’s impossible to sleep around here.”
Already dressed, James grabbed his shotgun and several plastic gallon water jugs, which he had strung together with nautical rope, and sprinted down the steps, the jugs thumping with each step. He pushed aside the heavy desk and chair he had used to barricade the door and scrunched down to peek out through a two-inch crack he had opened. He saw the truck that had stopped in the middle of the road. As he struggled to focus, he smelled the burning air and saw the heat waves reflecting off the cracked and buckled asphalt. He made out several residents emerging from their deteriorating town-homes, guns and jugs in hand, walking toward the truck with its distinctive Red Cross logo. The sound of his baby crying and the rustling of his waking family echoed through the empty stairwell.



Andrew Branham is an award winning writer and business executive who lives in Jackson, MI. Over the years, he has received several awards for his editorial columns and op-eds. His memoir, Anything for Amelia, has won multiple honors/awards.

He was born in the culturally rich and diverse town of Lorain,

Ohio. He is married and they have one daughter. Andrew is an avid writer and has contributed articles and op-eds for multiple major newspapers throughout the country. He also writes business articles for many different publications and websites.
Anything for Amelia is his first book and he was inspired to write it due to his extremely difficult adoption that many experts claimed was 'the most difficult adoption in U.S. history'. Andrew found that writing in a journal each day during the adoption helped him to relieve the extreme levels of stress that he was facing. The journal proved to be the key to him writing the memoir. Andrew hopes that his book will help other adoptive families to avoid some of the mistakes that he made. In addition, he is donating a portion of any profits to the foster care system.

He has recently finished his first fiction novel, Parched (available 4/14/16). It is a post-apocalyptic/dystopian novel that is set in a time when the world has nearly run out of water. It follows a family as they attempt to cross the United States in search of food, water and shelter. He was inspired to write this novel while living through the extreme droughts of Northern California.

THE PARA-PORTAGE OF EMILY IS A PARANORMAL, SUSPENSEFUL, LOVE STORY THAT KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT.  ONCE I STARTED READING, I WAS DRAWN INTO THE STORY FROM THE VERY FIRST PAGE UNTIL THE VERY END.  WE ARE INTRODUCED TO EMILY WHO COMES TO A FROZEN ISLAND ESTATE 250 MILES NORTH OF CHICAGO.  SHE IS THERE TO INVESTIGATE THE PROPERTIES' HISTORY TO SETTLE AN ESTATE.  EMILY LEARNS ABOUT COLIN, WHO LOST THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE IN CHILDBIRTH.  AS SHE INVESTIGATES, SHE FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE TOWN AND THE ESTATE.  EMILY HAS NIGHTLY VISITS FROM COLIN'S GHOST WHICH ARE VERY SENSUAL, SEXY AND HOT.  THE LOVEMAKING BETWEEN EMILY WAS VERY SENSUAL AND HOT AND MADE YOU WISH YOU HAD YOUR OWN GHOST.  EMILY FINDS HERSELF FALLING IN LOVE WITH COLIN'S GHOST.  WHAT HAPPENS WHEN EMILY LEARNS THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY SHE IS THERE?

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE PARA-PORTGAGE OF EMILY.  IT WAS VERY ROMANTIC LOVE STORY FILLED WITH SUSPENSE, INTRIGUE, MYSTERY AND LOVE LOST.  IT MAKES YOU BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE HAS A SOULMATE THAT THEY ARE DESTINED TO BE WITH FOREVER.  I LOVE MUFFY'S WRITING AND REALLY ENJOYED THE CHARACTERS ESPECIALLY EMILY AND COLIN.  SHE WAS REALLY SPECIAL AND COLIN WAS SO ROMANTIC AND LOVED HER SO MUCH.  THE STORY LEFT ME WANTING MORE.  IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A WONDER PARANORMAL ROMANCE, I RECOMMEND YOU READ THE PARA-PORTGAGE OF EMILY. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING MORE OF MUFFY'S BOOKS.  SHE IS A WONDERFUL WRITER.  5 STARS

Parched - a dystopian thriller by Andrew Branham V4



The sun no longer shone canary yellow. It hadn’t done so for years. Instead, it glared down, obstinate, punishing—beet red, like the garden tomatoes that no longer existed. It stood guard over the desert-dry water taps that had likewise fallen prey to the relentless heat, even in mid-October. Livermore, California had been a town set on rolling hills, swathed in green grass and fragrant orange poppies. Now, each day played out like the one before it: sun, heat, illness, death.

On that particular day, relative calm engulfed them. Only a few trails of smoke rose up in the distance toward the west and the Oakland Hills. Usually it was worse—the smoke was more like the dense cloud of marine fog that used to roll in daily. Now, the arid air, once fresh with coastal mist and the scent of eucalyptus trees mixed with wild lavender and rosemary, smelled like burning hay. The sun’s transition from an earthly asset to man’s most vicious foe had been going on for decades, but you would never have known it. It had caught humanity ill-prepared. Those who once had awaited its daily arrival now despised its very existence.

Scientists had a word for it; scientists had a word for everything. They called it a Red Giant, a star that had exhausted the supply of hydrogen at its core and had switched to thermonuclear fusion. As a result, the Earth found itself baking, its waters evaporating, and humanity’s extinction imminent. No scientist or politician could explain why the sun had made such a drastic transformation; nor did it matter.

In the distance, the sound of a laboring sixteen-wheeler lumbering up the road startled James as he popped up from his sleep. Scanning the room, he breathed out his relief. Everybody’s okay, he thought, checking out their California king bed. For a brief moment, he recalled his dream, in which he had been frolicking with his brother along the beaches of Lake Erie, near where they had grown up. But, instead of laughing, shouting, and swimming in cool waters, he was perspiring. Sweat soaked the bed and stained his shirt and underwear. His mouth felt and dry.

What’s the truck doing here at this hour?

The clanking of the massive tires hitting the potholes brought him back to reality. Rising cautiously, he kicked into the nightstand and let out a yelp, awakening their infant, who began to cry.

“What is it?” his wife asked.

“Nothing. Just the water truck. Go back to sleep.”

His thirteen-year-old son, Silas, was now awake as well and was scanning the room with his eyes. His long blond hair was matted down against his boyish face and, despite his sleep, he still looked extremely fatigued. He was irritated not only at the unrelenting heat and his sister’s cries, but also that he woke up in the same depressing room where they almost always stayed. Sometimes he hoped his life was just a nightmare that he would someday wake up from. Looking around, he saw walls stacked with cardboard boxes, dirty clothing on the floor, and dirt-stained sheets on the bed in which he was lying. The two windows in the room were covered in a thick film of dust and sand. A loaded rifle and handgun were on a box next to the bed.

“Can someone keep her quiet?” Silas grumbled as he looked toward his crying infant sister, Charlotte. “It’s impossible to sleep around here.”
Already dressed, James grabbed his shotgun and several plastic gallon water jugs, which he had strung together with nautical rope, and sprinted down the steps, the jugs thumping with each step. He pushed aside the heavy desk and chair he had used to barricade the door and scrunched down to peek out through a two-inch crack he had opened. He saw the truck that had stopped in the middle of the road. As he struggled to focus, he smelled the burning air and saw the heat waves reflecting off the cracked and buckled asphalt. He made out several residents emerging from their deteriorating town-homes, guns and jugs in hand, walking toward the truck with its distinctive Red Cross logo. The sound of his baby crying and the rustling of his waking family echoed through the empty stairwell.



Andrew Branham is an award winning writer and business executive who lives in Jackson, MI. Over the years, he has received several awards for his editorial columns and op-eds. His memoir, Anything for Amelia, has won multiple honors/awards.

He was born in the culturally rich and diverse town of Lorain,

Ohio. He is married and they have one daughter. Andrew is an avid writer and has contributed articles and op-eds for multiple major newspapers throughout the country. He also writes business articles for many different publications and websites.
Anything for Amelia is his first book and he was inspired to write it due to his extremely difficult adoption that many experts claimed was 'the most difficult adoption in U.S. history'. Andrew found that writing in a journal each day during the adoption helped him to relieve the extreme levels of stress that he was facing. The journal proved to be the key to him writing the memoir. Andrew hopes that his book will help other adoptive families to avoid some of the mistakes that he made. In addition, he is donating a portion of any profits to the foster care system.

He has recently finished his first fiction novel, Parched (available 4/14/16). It is a post-apocalyptic/dystopian novel that is set in a time when the world has nearly run out of water. It follows a family as they attempt to cross the United States in search of food, water and shelter. He was inspired to write this novel while living through the extreme droughts of Northern California.

The book I've reviewed is from a soon-to-be-released vampire paranormal romance anthology of short stories. I will add to this review once I finish reading the entire set.
Immortal Hearts - Excerpt
I buried my face in your chest and felt your heartbeat against each of my tears. Whatever took you, had returned you to me—to hold in my arms. I cried for my happiness, no longer angry, but perplexed. I trusted that you would tell me, in time and in good faith, the story of your presumed death. I thanked God for your life and for my life too now restored with a heart beating full of hope and promise.You comforted me until the aroma of your aftershave seduced me with a mounting desire. It had been a long time since I felt your touch, your strong arms around me, your heated palms on my back. Your breath may as well have been molten lava as I felt you exhale into my neck and it crawled down my cleavage. How was it that so hot a sensation could leave a trail of gooseflesh in its wake? Ah, the magic of passion; something that did not require explanation, just acceptance. It was the power and the rhythm of the Universe.I accepted my good fortune and melted into your body.My God, how I missed you.I can breathe again.
Review:
Immortal Hearts is the story about Lisbet Baylord and the loss of her husband—at least that is how the first chapter begins—a wonderful verse followed by the widow’s poignant and often agonizingly sorrowful thoughts in the wake of her loss. Anyone who has lost a loved one, especially his or her significant other can truly sympathize with Lisbet’s plight. Every word tugged at my heartstrings. She is confused, distraught, and searching for her own solace along with answers. As we all do when we’re faced with such a devastating and unexpected situation. But Lisbet is also a strong woman who can be very resourceful in the face of adversity as she stands up to a detective who refuses to believe her husband is dead. I’m sorry but I won’t add a synopsis because if I say too much I could spoil the story.I’ve read a number of this author’s books and Immortal Hearts is by far her most exceptional piece to date. From the very first word to the last, I was totally enthralled with the recalcitrant Lisbet and Ms. Wilson’s beautifully executed prose. I was on the edge of my seat and eagerly tapped to the next page (eBook) in anxious apprehension, wondering what would happen next. In reality, such a turbulent plot could’ve gone anywhere. Was her husband still alive? Is the detective on the up and up? Who can she trust? But, thankfully, the ending is a happy one that holds a surprising twist.
If you love vampires like I do and can appreciate a well-crafted story with engaging characters that encompasses the perfect amount of romance, sex, suspense and a touch of mystery, you will thoroughly enjoy Immortal Hearts. Five stars!

Vampire Bites is a fresh look into the paranormal genre of fiction I gave this anthology a deserving 5 Stars. Most deserving of this rating is Muffy Wilson’s ingenious creation, Immortal Hearts. I adored this story. Muffy Wilson has created out of this world magic with her prose. This immortal romance blazes with intense passion for the best of heated page burners, from almost any book I have previously read, from beginning to end. She continues to illustrate her bountiful talents where she left off in Consenting Hearts. I was consumed with interest in this modern paranormal romance. The author writes a contemporary, paranormal love story between Damien and Lisbet so naturally and convincingly; you would not realize you are reading a “vampire” story. The couple’s passion sucked me, blindly into accepting the world of the undead, as a life I would like to live with my loving partner. Once Damien appeared to have returned to Lisbet, I was dazzled by the mystery and suspense, intertwined with the heated, romantic love existing with this couple. Muffy’s imagery is superb, once again.
