Ah, Youth

"I was terribly naïve in those days [when I did a shitload of drugs:]. I thought the crazier you behaved, the better artist you would be. And there was a time when I had a lot of energy to display how crazy that was."

-- Dennis Hopper, 2002

Oh, Dennis. I hear you. I hear you. I hear you.

Here's To Your Fuck, Frank

I love you forever, Frank Booth. You've helped me through some hard times.

(Is that creepy? I don't give a fuck.)

R.I.P.

The President on Grand Isle

I don't think I've even begun to process the weirdness of seeing The. Prez. O. Dent. Of. The. United. States (and not even a sucky one) walking on the beaches of Grand Isle and Port Fourchon. Don't get me wrong, I think it's very good that he came. But those beaches are where Chris and I have had some of the happiest, most peaceful moments of our lives. What cognitive dissonance to see a clusterfuck of politicians in spots where I've rarely seen more than a handful of people, usually locals f...

My People, My People

One of the best trends that has hit New Orleans in the wake of the federal levee failure is the large number of smart young professionals who've moved here in the past five years. They want to help with the rebuilding, but they also see history happening and want to be a part of it. One of them is my friend B, a teacher. I should say "was" -- he's leaving indefinitely tomorrow morning, even though he doesn't want to.

He called me tonight to say goodbye, and two things in particular saddened an...

Tell It To Ray Bradbury

So I was looking through Google images to confirm that the cool spider on my yellow rose bush is a Silver Argiope (don't click that link if you're not a spider fan), and I found the following text:

"The bottom picture shows a Silver Argiope (Argiope argentata), with a prominent "writing" pattern in the middle of the web. The spider is a juvenile, and the writing pattern in the web tones down as the spider ages. Often the "Z" or "X" pattern on adult webs is restricted to a couple of short...

British Bowels Beware

[info:] flemco dissects Taco Bell for unsuspecting Brits. My new favorite food-writing phrase: "eating a goddamned knot of crappy filth at four o'clock in the morning."

Various

Actually, as some of you probably figured out, when I'm actually super-busy I don't usually take the time to post about how busy I am. What really happened was that I somehow lost the urge/ability to eat for several days and got into a very weird, unpleasant headspace because of it. Today, at least, I picked the first ripe tomatoes from the garden and had a sandwich for dinner that Harriet the Spy herself would have loved.

My research has only begun, but from what I hear so far, trans medical...

A Few Glossary Notes

I hope everyone who reads the gender glossary I posted last night will also read the comments, because some of these terms are fluid, people's definitions of them vary, and there are good points being made.

I claim no authority in defining these terms, nor do I intend them to be a complete glossary of gender-related terms you should know. They're simply some of the terms I will probably be using most often to discuss this aspect of my life, so I wanted to clarify what they mean to me.

In discus...
