Vegan Barbecue Ribz

Ribz with a Z to indicate that no animal suffered or died for this food. Because they're not made of flesh, they're made of seitan, which is nothing more than wheat flour. It has more protein than tofu. And yes, seitan is pretty much pronounced like the Prince of Darkness.

Here's a link to the original recipe Yes, you can make these 100% fat free!! Try doing that with your dead animal ribs!

Here's a picture of when I made them:

These are the best, most awesome seitan recipe ever, but it's actually the sauce that puts them over the top. The sauce recipe is adapted from Louise Hagler's Meatless Burgers.

BBQ Sauce

8 oz can of organic tomato sauce

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon prepared or dijon mustard

1 teaspoon chili powder (not cayenne powder)

2/3 cup water

1 tablespoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and stir at medium heat until blended.

Vegan Orange Scented Almond Biscotti

No tea addiction could ever be complete without a cookie addiction to pair along with it. I made these tonight and they are easy and delicious. This recipe is from Robin Robertson's genius awesome giant tome of a cookbook Vegan Planet. Thanks Robin!!

Ingredients

1/3 cup soy margarine 2 cups flour

2/3 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

*Egg replacer for 2 eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons orange zest

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup slivered almonds

Optional: 1/4 cup chopped dates (my addition)

1. Cream soy margarine & sugar with a beater until light and fluffy.

2. Blend in egg replacer and vanilla, mixture ends up soupy. Mix in flour and baking powder. Lastly add orange zest, almonds, and dates if using. Chill for 10 minutes in refrigerator. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

3. Divide chilled dough in half and knead until it sticks together. Form two logs and flatten them slightly on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 25 to 30 minutes in the 350 degree oven.

4. Take the biscotti loaves out of the oven, let them cool a little, and slice them into 3/4 to one inch slices. Place them back on the cookie sheet and bake 10 minutes more at a lower temp, 275 degrees.

*Egg replacer: Instead of egg, you can use flaxseed meal. 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tablespoons water equals one egg. Wait 5 minutes and it colloids into a weird viscous paste.

Alternately, 1/4 cut soft tofu OR 1/4 cup pureed fruit mushed with 1/2 teaspoon baking powder = 1 egg.

New Improved Double Cross Shoji Screen

I mostly don't do crafts, but I had a folding room-divider type shoji screen like this one:

I think you can probably tell what I did: took an old calendar and cardstock in black and "Far East" theme and cut and Elmer glued all the pretty pictures of geisha — I couldn't bear throwing them away!! :D

Adventures in Hapa Eyeshadow: Silver and Gold

I have fun with eyeshadow. This was silver and gold. Gold is my favorite color of eyeshadow ever.

1. "Primed" eyelid with a thin layer of base and some loose powder on a sponge over it.

2. Covered eyelid with gold color and blended in with a soft brush.

3. Highlighted the edge of my upper and lower eyelid with white-silver, brush dipped in water to make the color stronger.

4. Tightlined entire eye in black. I use Studio Gear cake eyeliner (from Ulta) with a Laura Mercier flat brush.

5. 3 coats of black mascara.

Our house is a Mac ad.

Oops, that's a PC. The room has at least 5 computers in it, two of which I claim. It's computer-nerd city around here.
