Look on the Bright Side

Yaakov generally used his King Solomon character to represent the government. 

Our Druze brothers are being killed in Syria and Lebanon with almost no notice or condemnation by the rest of the world. The humanitarian aid is being blocked on the Gaza side by Hamas. The political scene in Israel is a mess. Maybe it is the dark before the light, hopefully. This cartoon is a humorous attempt to look on the bright side.

Golda's and Our Jewish Arrogance

   Dry Bones Golden Oldies in the fond memory of Yaakov Kirschen (Dry Bones) by Sali, the LSW. (Long Suffering Wife). This cartoon is from 1973. The people change but the situation doesn't change much. This was originally in B&W. I think that Yaakov colored this and reused it about 10 years ago.

It has now been three months since Yaakov passed away. I thought that I would give you a bit of an update on how I am doing these days. Feel free to skip this long read. 

My brain fog has made me feel like I have mashed potatoes for a brain much of the time. But I noticed just a couple of days ago that the fog is starting to clear. My tears are fewer. My moments of overwhelming grief and feeling like I will die too are fewer. Everyone with experience with widowhood tells me that time makes things easier, and I see that it is true. 

It still is emotionally hard for me to do the blog postings. It is easy to find a good cartoon. There are 8 or 9 thousand of them to choose from, but it is hard emotionally for me to look at all the old cartoons. They are like looking at him, a least for me. 

Finally, today, I was steady enough to open up his laptop that he used at the rehab place for the last month or two of his life. Just because it has all of his favorite apps and programs and was so much a part of him. I am not sure why it is so hard for me. But I am taking a big gulp of air (and coffee too) and using his new laptop. Next week I will take the big step of having my computer guy, take off some of the things that I would not use, and put on to it my things, such as the bank. (Yaakov almost never dealt with money stuff. It made him very nervous, so I handled everything in the financial area.) I sometimes resented that, but now I am very happy that, unlike many widows, especially of my generation, I don't have the extra burden of suddenly learning the finances and the banking.

His laptop is much bigger, and stronger than mine. Also it has a touch screen. So I will soon start using it as mine. I wonder if other spouses find it hard in the beginning to use the things that were their spouses.

Hopefully now doing the blog postings will become much easier and I will find time and emotional space to go back to more painting time for myself. Soon maybe, I will start posting more about my paintings. I am 78 years old and reasonably healthy, so might have yet a few more years to get used to and live with being the widow of a very great man.

We have not had an unveiling yet. We will wait till his middle daughter is here from the USA, but we have put up the headstone. His daughters were responsible for the design and the wording and I think that they did a very good job.

Historical Threats

This morning we had another siren at about 5 AM from a Houthi Missile. The Jerusalem area has been having it almost every night, but the Tel Aviv area has been mostly quiet since the ceasefire with Iran.  The whole country is trying to get over the sleep deprivation that we are feeling. Lots of people are a bit grumpy and on edge, but acting like all is OK and normal.

Uneven Standards

Israel is held to different standards than everywhere else in the world. Some of that is because we try to hold ourselves the a higher standard. But most of that is antisemitism. More truths and information are coming out about the horrible atrocities committed on Oct. 7th, especially to the women.

Israel is united?

This cartoon is from 2020. Somehow though, it feels a bit uncomfortable, bittersweet and strange to post such a happy cartoon about a super successful rescue of hostages in light of the Israeli hostages still in Gaza today. I know that Yaakov would have captured the proper feeling if he was here.
