I started in October 2005 (I don’t remember the day, exactly) so…yes. Nine years.

As for what inspired me to write BEYOND THE RED, I’ll give you the short version. Basically, I’d come up with one of the main characters and the planet BtR takes place on long before it even crossed my mind to turn it into a book. Then two Aprils ago (ish), when I was brainstorming new book ideas and I decided it’d be really cool to write about aliens from the alien’s perspective, my brain was like hello, Ava, you already have an alien world developed, remember? and from there I basically started throwing in everything I love and the story developed from there. I absolutely am still interested in writing a book with a disabled protagonist—and in fact have a project on my roster with just that. :) Still has a looooong way to go before it sees the light of day, but I'm working on it and I hope I'll be able to share it with everyone one day in the future!(less)

“Emptiness felt like a living thing. A parasite growing in the center of your chest, somewhere behind your heart, taking every ounce of warmth and light and happiness and consuming it until there's nothing left. Emptiness feels like exhaustion, like there's no reason to fight, no reason to take another breath, no reason to try to survive. But emptiness also feels like freedom. Because it doesn't just take the good, it takes the bad, too--the anger, the bitterness, the pain--and when it's done, it leaves you with just you. A cold, shell-like echo of yourself, but still you.”
Ava Jae, Beyond the Red

“I have struggled for some time, and I won't allow it any longer. If your feelings are still what they were earlier this month, please tell me so, but I can no longer contain my own. I admire you, Oliver Bennet. Your spirit, your wit, your open honesty-I have thought of nothing else since we first met”
Gabe Cole Novoa, Most Ardently

“We're permitted to bring a guest,' Darcy said. 'We could bring a guest every week if we wanted to. I'd be happy to make you mine.'

Oliver arched an eyebrow.

Darcy's face flushed pink. 'My... guest. That is.'

Oliver grinned. How on Earth was it possible that this was the same Darcy as last night? Or even this morning? 'I'd be honored.'

Darcy's smile was small and sweet—and Oliver found he couldn't look away.

For some reason, he didn't want to.”

“You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real.”
Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

“we write every day, we fight every day, we think and scheme and dream a little dream every day. manuscripts pile up in the kitchen sink, run-on sentences dangle around our necks. we plant purple prose in our gardens and snip the adverbs only to thread them in our hair. we write with no guarantees, no certainties, no promises of what might come and we do it anyway. this is who we are.”
Tahereh Mafi

“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

“Killing time isn't as difficult as it sounds.

I can shoot a hundred numbers through the chest and watch them bleed decimal points in the palm of my hand. I can rip the numbers off a clock and watch the hour hand tick tick tick its final tock just before I fall asleep. I can suffocate seconds just by holding my breath. I've been murdering minutes for hours and no one seems to mind.”
Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me

“It's just that most really good-looking people are stupid, so I exceed expectations.'
'Right, it's primarily his hotness,' I said.
'It can be sort of blinding,' he said.
'It actually did blind our friend Isaac,' I said.
'Terrible tragedy, that. But can I help my own deadly beauty?'
'You cannot.'
'It is my burden, this beautiful face.'
'Not to mention your body.'
'Seriously, don't even get me started on my hot bod. You don't want to see me naked, Dave. Seeing me naked actually took Hazel Grace's breath away,' he said, nodding toward the oxygen tank.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars
