YESTERDAY at the MIBF I signed books from 1.30-7.30 pm. I felt sorry for those who were disappointed by the cut-off time, but by then it was seriously courting hand cramps or carpal tunnel syndrome.
MY sincere apologies to the Ateneo and UP Press whose booths were inconvenienced by the long line of Looking Back readers. I appreciate those who waited over 3 hours to get their books signed, we will do better next time. It was good to be onsite to meet and greet readers again, to know that pe...

NEAR FAMOUS again at MIBF.
WAS great to have an on-site meet and greet, the first in two years.
NEAR Famous at the Anvil booth the other day with (clockwise from upper left): HIDLYN DIAZ who needs no introduction; BUTCH DALISAY who has more pens, rare Filipiniana, and typewriters than me; FRANCIS KONG whose voice on DZFE kept me sane in morning traffic; and CRIS ABIVA the cake lady!
SIGNING books at MIBF today from 2 pm @Anvil Booth.
*HEADS UP. The 32nd anniversary edition...

The Asin law: Repeal or amend

My Inquirer column today is on the ASIN Law that requires all locally produced salt to be iodized. I hope this law be repealed or amended to allow us to choose whether to get iodized or non-iodized salt.

When traveling north on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx), I always look at Mt. Arayat, jutting out of the Central Luzon plain, and recall childhood summers happily spent with my cousins in San

Spent a day signing the 32nd anniversary edition of Rizal without the Overcoat at the Msnils International Bookfair, and FB reminded me that The first of 16 Looking Back books was launched 12 years ago. Will be at MIBF again this Saturday at 2pm.

Teachers can't turn to clock to 2019, they shouldn't lose some gains from pandemic lockdown. After two years, I have grown weary of Zoom and look forward to teaching a blended (onsite/online) history class next term.

Now that masking outdoors is voluntary, Rizal prefers to wear his, at least on the cover of my book.
IF books are like children, Rizal without the Overcoat is my second born, in a brood of thirty-five. I don’t consider Overcoat my favorite child, lest the other titles get jealous, but I must say Overcoat is the most famous, and has been around a long time.
TURNING thirty-two in 2022 Overcoat is way older than many students assigned to read it. I am looking to seeing a physical copy of ...

#HistoryNotTsismis
TWO SIGNATURES OF ANDRES BONIFACIO.
PRESERVED in the Spanish Military Archives in Madrid [Bottom] is a letter in Andres Bonifacio’s flowing penmanship dated 25 January 1896, signed in code “Vzypzgzsz” [Maypagasa].
IN a private collection in Manila is a letter to Emilio Jacinto dated 16 April 1897 [Top] Bonifacio closes affectionately “Tangapin ninyo ang aking mahigpit na yakap” and signs clearly both with his name Andres Bonifacio and his Katipunan name “Maypagasa” [T...

RESPONSIBLE LIBRARY MARKING OR VANDAL STAMPING?
THE original manuscript of Jose Rizal’s translations of five tales by Hans Cristian Andersen from German to Tagalog is believed to have been lost or destroyed during the 1945 Battle for Manila. What remains is a clear prewar photostatic copy.
RIZAL wrote thesefor his nephews and nieces, illustrating each page with charming spot drawings that have been since been defaced by a red prewar property stamp that screams: “GOVERNMENT PROPERTY P[...

My Inquirer column looks back on the declaration of martial law that we all associate with September 21, 1972. Marcos himself says he signed the proclamation on September 17, postdated it to the 21st, cleared its implementation on the 22nd and announced it to the public or proclaimed it on the 23rd when almost all opposition was silenced.
History is not as simple as your textbooks make it out to be, it is complicated by a mix of primary sources.
