AN ENEMY DESCRIPTION OF MIGUEL MALVAR, 1901
For some years now, there has been an unsuccessful attempt to get Miguel Malvar (1865-1911) into the roster of Philippine Presidents. Frankly, Malvar is better served by his inclusion in the pantheon of heroes, in recognition of his military exploits as Katipunero, during the Philippine Revolution against Spain, and General during the Philippine-American War.
Today, his 157th birth anniversary, we complement a ...

#HistoryNotTsismis #neveragain
50 years ago on September 23, 1972 Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. went on television and radio to announce that he had placed the Philippines under Martial Law. Days later he was elated that things went according to plan.
The most important of the “200 target personalities” had been arrested (including Senators Benigno Aquino, Jr. Jose Diokno, and Ramon Mitra as well as the publishers Chino Roces of the Manila Times and Teodoro Locsin, Sr. of the Free Press); all...

Grateful. Happy. Fulfilled this week.
Three of my students presented papers at academic conferences last week. HOBBEE SY delivered a paper at the London School of Oriental and African Studies While through Zoom JEREMY CLEMENTE and GAB PASCUA presented papers at the annual conference of the Philippine Historical Association. Pascua is only a freshman, a student in my undergrad Rizal course.
With young people like these doing history, my retirement will indeed be a happy one.

#historyhinditsismis #neveragain #MarcosDiaries
50 years ago tonight then Defense Secretary’s convoy was ambushed inside the quiet gated subdivision Wack-wack. This, we are told, was the trigger for the Martial Law decree signed by Ferdinand Marcos, Sr on September 17, dated September 21, but withheld until further orders. In 1986 Enrile said the ambush was staged, but in his 2012 memoirs Enrile says the ambush was real. Which version of Enrile’s should we believe?
From Marcos’ own diary i...

#HistoryHindiTsismis.
FLAGS OF THE REVOLUTION NOT EVOLUTION OF THE PHILIPPINE FLAG.
History-learning is not confined to a classroom or textbooks. A lot of it is absorbed outside school through mass media, monuments, banknotes, coins and stamps. Sometimes these can unknowingly create Fake News, like the 1972 postage stamp series “Evolution of the Philippine Flag” that took awhile for me to unlearn.
The series of postage stamps did not present an accurate “evolution” into the present fl...

FAKE NEWS or why you should not judge a book by its cover.
AN offset reprint of the Doctrina Christiana in Spanish and Baybayin (1593), was first published by the National Historical Institute in 1973 and reprinted in 1991under the title: Doctrina Christiana The First Book Printed in the Philippines (Upper Left). Whoever designed the cover obviously didn’t read Carlos Quirino’s Foreword (Lower Left) entitled “The First Philippine Imprints.” This is a mistake that was hard to correct.
