My Inquirer column looks back on the declaration of martial law that we all associate with September 21, 1972. Marcos himself says he signed the proclamation on September 17, postdated it to the 21st, cleared its implementation on the 22nd and announced it to the public or proclaimed it on the 23rd when almost all opposition was silenced.
History is not as simple as your textbooks make it out to be, it is complicated by a mix of primary sources.
