A Walking Tour of Rizal's Manila.
With a copy of the Noli and an 1872 map of Manila, Pedro Ortiz Armengol, historian who served as Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines, gave me a walking tour of Rizal's Manila that changed my life.
On the map Ibarra starts from Kapitan Tiago's house on Analogue street (now Luna), he takes a stroll on Sacristy (now Ongpin) takes a cab and returns to the Fonda de Lala on Calle Barraca here marked with the lower star.
My Inquirer column today is on that ...

True: GOLD TARA OF AGUSAN.
False: Tallano Gold.
Since preHispanic Philippine gold has been in the news recently, we might as well discuss the renaming of what we know as the "Golden Tara of Agusan" into the "GOLD Tara of Agusan." This image of a Hindu=Biddhist deity discovered in Esperanza, Agusan in 1917 is made of gold and weighs 1.8 kilos. It has been dated to the 9-10thC.
We know what this looks like from the front (Left) so I am supplying an image of the back (Right) taken on a v...

ALFONSO T. ONGPIN is one of the people I wish I had met because of his great Rizaliana collection: books, photographs, art, medals, even relics like: the slippers embroidered by Leonor Rivera for Rizal (on the wall behind his head) , remains of the coat Rizal wore on the day he was shot, etc. This photo from a Sunday Times Magazine feature by Carmen Guerrero Nakpil shows Ongpin in his later years. In postcard collecting circles I have seen prewar photos of him and his collection some of which ar...

"Salakot de asta y plata" [salakot of horn and silver] is the description Rizal wrote in his donation to the Berlin Ethnological Museum in 1888. Then he added, in German, "Es gehorte mir" [This is mine].
When I held the salakot in my hands, I was sorely tempted to try it on but didn't want to scandalize the German museum curators who provided access to the Rizal collection that is the subject of my Inquirer column today.

My Inquirer column today is on primary source material on the Philippines that I worked on recently at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Reading some of the accounts made my blood pressure rise because of unfair descriptions of the Philippines and the Filipinos made a century ago that would be grossly politically incorrect today. History teaches us to generate light not heat and the skillful historian can tease truth even from a biased source. We can't change the past so instead of...
