FAKES & HOAXES FROM PHILIPPINE HISTORY
One of three bonga bark manuscripts with Visayan baybayin written in cuttlefish ink donated to the National Library in 1913. James Alexander Robertson declared these "the greatest literary find in the Philippines." He believed them to be the only surviving fragments of preSpanish Philippine culture destroyed by Spanish missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries..

These mysterious objects were actually fakes donated by Jose E. Marco who had...

The faces behind: Leonard Wood Road in Baguio (left) and Forbes Park in Makati (right). Leonard Wood was U.S. Governor-general 1921-1927 William Cameron Forbes was Governor-general 1909-1913. The 1922 Report on Conditions in the Philippines by the Wood-Forbes Mission may be a century old but makes for engaging reading because it shows how much has changed in the last 100 years and how much has also remained the same.
My Inquirer column today on what we can learn from the Wood Forbes Missio...

ROCKWELL today is known for its upscale shopping mall and equally upscale condos. Power Plant Mall is a reference to the former thermal plant on the Makati site that operated from 1950-1973. The old Power Plant is history now, just like John C. Rockwell and I'm glad we have a passport photo to connect the Rockwell name with a face.

Found a prewar photograph of Rizal's notebook in the Library of Congress (Left) that we can compare with its present state (Right).
The ink is corrosive and is earting into the manuscript. There must be a way to arrest the deterioration and conserve this original "Notebook of Various Questions" for future generations.

From my editor Thelma San Juan's memories. A pity phones were not allowed in PNoy's QC home.

When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, changed who can see it or it's been deleted.

RIZAL IN QUARANTINE.
AS he sailed off from New York to Liverpool on May 16, 1888 Rizal drew a sketch of the Brooklyn bridge and mentioned passing by the Statue of Liberty. A pity he only sketched the bridge rather than the statue!
MY Inquirer column today is on the short, spotty diary he kept on a land trip from San Francisco to New York. He did not seem to like the U.S.A. because he started the trip on the wrong foot by being quarantined on the ship where he was bored witless.

Martial Law was NOT implemented on 21 September 1972.
While the Marcos Martial Law proclamation is dated 21 September 1972, it was not implemented on that day. Marcos appeared on television on the evening of September 23 to announce that he had placed the Philippines under Martial Law. Therefore, the Daily Express front-page headline about Martial Law appeared on September 24 (right).
When the newspaper of September 21 (left) was sold on the streets, nobody had an inkling of what...

Ongoing at the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. is "1898 U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions" that looks back 125 years to the legacies of the Spanish-American War.
In the display case is a Krag rifle used by U.S. troops and a kris from Mindanao. Mute reminders of a forgotten war.
In the background a portrait of Rizal by Luna (left) and a portrait of Apolinario Mabini (right) by Fabian de la Rosa both on loan from Manila
