Thanks to Felice Prudente Sta. Maria's profile pic, I was able to identify this random photo in my food files as the practice kitchen in the Philippine Normal School, circa 1910, In this kitchen dominated by a huge exhaust future teachers of, what we know today as, Home Economics learned cooking and how to manage a home.

Many of my students cannot read cursive, almost all of them cannot write in cursive. To give them a sense of my work I ask them to transcribe 19th century manuscripts in Tagalog. When they say the task is difficult, I reply you have not even tried reading documents from the 17th and 18th centuries!
The most complicated 21st century signature [Inset Lower Left] I know was from the late Ludovico D. Badoy, who was Executive Director when I was Chair of t...

Solidaridad bookshop@60.
One evening I asked National Artist F. Sionil Jose what it was like to grow old,. To get a feel of it and retirement I asked if I could try on his wheelchair.
Frankie Jose was the light and life of Solidaridad Bookstore, that celebrates its 60th anniversary today. It rose to become the cultural heart of Ermita. I owe a lot to Frankie and Tessie, the bookshop, and the kindred spirits who gathered there. It was a place where I felt that my person and my work was...

Juan Luna in the San Agustin Crypt
Juan Luna in the San Agustin Crypt.
37 years ago, I brought my students to Intramuros, where the visual aids are bigger than life.
In the crypt of San Agustin church, I pointed out plot 73 where the painter Juan Luna was buried, and moved on to the other exhibits. On our way out of the crypt, twenty minutes later, I saw one of the students still standing, staring at plot 73. I tapped her gently on the shoulder, and said we were moving to the next hall. Our short conversation changed my lif...
