This is a corner of Photo-oleo exhibit at the National Museum where you can meet my mother face-to-face, not once but twice. The one on the left is the one that has gone viral.
It seems the display has been rearranged since this photo was taken in 2021 as my mother's photo-oleos are now side by side.
My Inquirer column today narrates the stories behind the two images:

ANTONIO LUNA (1866-1899) had Ilocano ancestry but he was born in Binondo. Impressions, a collection of his essays, was published in Madrid in 1891 under his pseudonym Taga-ilog, the root of the word "Tagalog." While he is best remembered as a general of the Philippine American War, it is not well-known that he was a man of science, trained at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, and was one of the best swordsmen and guitar players of his generation.
Some of Luna's writings have been translated fr...

Imagine the present Blackbird Restaurant on Makati Avenue [Encircled] before World War 2. It was then an airport control Neilson Tower. What are now Paseo de Roxas and Ayala Avenues were the runways. Can you locate where the Manila Peninsula and Makati Shangrila now stand? Could anyone at the time imagine that this grazing land would develop into the glitzy Makati Commercial and Business District?

If I filter the background and wear a sweater people will think I am in a kiat-kiat orchard in China, but this is Binondo, the world's oldest Chinatown, two weeks before the Chinese New Year. I forgot to bring Freud but had great company with Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks mapping out the routes for my special tour of Rizal's Binondo coming soon.

Ephemera from the Philippine Revolution and the First Republic are so small and fragile.
Tomorrow, the 125th anniversary of the promulgation of the Malolos Constitution, was the prompt to open my Cabinet of Curiosities and bring out a copy of the Constitution, printed small, the size of a novena, quite appropriate because all the events were held in Barasoain Church.
