17thC Manila
One of the highlights of the Manila Galleon show at the ACM (Asian Civilisations Museum) Singapore is this 17thC "baul" or wood chest loaned from Puebla, Mexico. Painted on the lid is one of the earliest depictions of Manila both Intramuros and the area outside the walls or extra-muros. My apologies for the shaky amateur video.

Na-budol is the word. Will be using my new pen to sign books at the Philippine Bookfair next month.

If you are in Angeles, Pampanga on Thursday March 21.
I will deliver the opening keynote in a two-day International Conference on Kapampangan Cuisine that has a stellar cast of speakers. I will also be launching a small book, actually my BA thesis from the last century, as "Manyaman: Food in Pampango Culture."

Editing people out of a photo is not new.
At a recent InLife presscon, Sharon Cuneta narrated how, after a quarrel, she posted a family pic [Upper Left] with the head of her husband cut out. She regretted that. She then posted another family pic [Lower Left] this time with her head cut out and the caption: "It's a tie."
Editing someone out of a photo is easier today with a smartphone, but the process is quite old. During a short tour of the "Splendor" exhibition at the Ayala Museum la...

AFTER THE GALLEONS...WHAT?
Was in Singapore last weekend, not for Taylor Swift but to deliver the opening Keynote at the International Conference on the Manila Galleon at the Asian Civilizations Museum (Thanks to archeologist Bobby Orillaneda for the pic).
Part of my remarks went into my Inquirer column today

My Inquirer column today is on a remarkable American woman who published a pamphlet on the Philippines in 1903. Helen Calista Wilson was described by Time Magazine in 1929 as a "tramp" and a "wanderlustful spinster." She reported on many things including the funeral of Apolinario Mabini.

A HUMBLING EXPERIENCE INDEED.
Author Joel Donato Ching Jacob bought kutsinta in Los Baños recently and recognized my face on the wrapper.
The late E. Aguilar Cruz taught me long ago never to take myself too seriously because what is published in today's paper can be tomorrow's wrapper for dried fish, or worse, used to wipe someone's behind.
