Walking along the Bangkok red-light district in the daytime makes you see things more clearly. There were many go-go bars with suggestive names like Octopussy and Superpussy but nothing beats the selection that awaits you in this place.

This is but one of many full-scale portraits of bishops from the 18th to the 19th centuries that line the cloisters of the Augustinian monastery in Valladolid, Spain. It caught my eye because in the background were capiz windows, evidence that this friar-bishop served in the Philippines.

Of the many watercolors Juan Luna did for the Tagalog translation of the Noli me tangere this one, Filisofo Tasio, is my favorite. Paciano Rizal completed the translation in Hongkong, Rizal corrected it but it was never published. Worse, the manuscript cannot be found and the original Luna illustrations were believed lost or destroyed in the Battle for Manila in 1945.
