Once upon a time, people were spared from mosquito bites (and dengue) by mosquito nets or kulambo. Part of the set in upper class homes were hooks made from melted silver coins expertly crafted into birds, butterflies or flowers. People must have had time to create beauty in ordinary things.

Juan Luna painted a charming portrait of his daughter "Bibi" ("baby") whose nickname was shorthand for her complete baptismal name: Maria de la Paz Blanca Laureana Herminigilda Juana Luna y Pardo de Tavera! Will post a better image when I get one, this one is reversed and washed out but doesnt diminish Luna's masterful handiwork.
