This is what the granite marker by the main door of Sta. Cruz church looked like after I cleaned it. You don't need to be a historian or a heritage advocate to know it is old and possibly important yet it has remained neglected and exposed to the elements for centuries. Can someone confirm if its still there and what state its in?

Three decades ago I washed this 18th century granite memorial slab in front of Santa Cruz Church in Manila to make it more legible. I couldn't make out the text then and hope that it is still there and is not another historical marker eroded by those who walk all over it.

Spent Mother's Day with new friends Jun and Ayako. We walked in a bamboo forest, washed our money in a cave, sampled local food and ended up gazing at the Great Buddha of Kamakura that I had previously known only from pictures.

My mother looked like a woman out of an Amorsolo painting. Thats why she was hired by the Philippine Travel Bureau to welcome tourists to the country. Happy Mother's Day!

There is a growing appreciation these days for traditional food and cooking. Palates grown stale and lazy because of “fast food” now look forward to “slow food.” In time, I hope, Filipinos will rediscover their roots from the food they eat.

Filipinos today beat the summer heat by going indoors where there is aircon or lie in the beach with almost nothing on but sunscreen. A century earlier, Pinoys enjoyed summer in the shade by a cool bubbling brook--fully clothed with hats and parasol.

Sigmund Freud is often associated with a psychoanalyst’s leather couch. Now I know better after dipping into the multi-volume compilation of his writings.
