Typhoon presently hovering over Tokyo, but this morning we had the legendary sunny Rizal weather at Hibiya Park when Philippine ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez led a simple floral offering by Rizal's statue. With me are Ambassador and Mrs. Lopez and Prof Lorenzo Terada of Sophia University. Happy 151st birthday Lolo Jose!

Its Jose Rizal's 151st birthday today. This page from Rizal's Japan notebook (1888), now preserved in the Lopez Museum, shows Rizal drawing in the Japanese style. The two kanji characters on the right read "ni-hon" or Japan.

FB acting up again. This photo uploaded this morning for Fathers Day doesn't appear on the wall! Dad and me in the National Museum, Jakarta wondering whether this ancient stone sculpture of "Shiva's linga" is really a symbol of procreative energy or does it re-present what we think it is :)

I had to lie on the floor of the living room of the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit (when no one was looking) to photograph the relief on the ceiling depicting Filipinas casting the chains that bound her and waving our flag as the sun of freedom rises in the background.

When we celebrate the declaration of Philippine independence on June 12, do we remember the other events that led to Kawit?

This prewar RTO advertisement made me smile. Not only does it quote Ruskin (high brow talaga) but its main selling point was not taste and pulp bits but sanitation! Other soft drinks were like "dirty ice cream" rather unsafe for consumption.

The return of Spanish
opinion.inquirer.net
The declaration of Philippine Independence from Spain was read from a window of Emilio Aguinaldo’s home in Kawit on June 12, 1898. On the same day, the Philippine flag and anthem, as we know them today, became officially the symbols of the Filipino nation. Textbook history makes the past look so eas...
