Visiting National Artist Arturo Luz in his studio to see what he's working on is always a treat. On my last visit he wasn't able to offer my favorite NY Times minestrone soup so he made up with: two paintings, three collages, and a photo-collage! My loot on his work table. Now I know how it feels to win the lotto. Thank you Mr. Luz!

Why is it that when we speak of Manila we refer to it in the past tense? Spanish Manila was once the walled city (Intra-muros) and the rest of the city outside the walls (extra-muros) were arrabales or suburbs. Legazpi founded Manila in 1571 in an existing city, may-nila, where the nila plant grew i...

One of our demanding theology professors once entered the classroom and predicted: “One day you will return to the Ateneo with a big smile on your face after being told by a member of the Opus Dei that all Jesuits will go to Hell.”

Filipiniana in Japan. In the chapel of the Jesuit House inside Sophia University, Tokyo is an impressive 17th or 18th century Hispano-Philippine ivory of the crucified Christ. I should research a bit more on the image and how it got there, it promises to be an engaging story.

Weeks ago I wrote about the overheated auction scene in Manila and the elegant Baliuag furniture made from Philippine hardwood ornamented with pleasing designs from carabao horn.
