Elmore Leonard’s 10 Rules of Writing

First, I’m over at The Blood-Red Pencil again today, talking about a writing/editing technique I heard about at the Mystery Writers of America University. Hope you’ll drop by and check it out. Comments welcome.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Elmore Leonard. He’ll be missed. I blogged about his writing tips back in 2009. I’m sure they’ll be all over the Blogosphere, but I think they’re worth repeating.

What’s Cooking Wednesday — Tuna Salad With Herbed Toast

Hubster found this one in the Food Network Magazine, and changed the herbed mayo, using what we had on hand (see note below), and substituting the mixed greens we also had on hand for part of the romaine. I can see it working just a well with chicken.

Tuna Salad With Herbed Toast

S&P

4 thick slices crusty bread

2 T red wine vinegar

In the Interview Room — Kate Wyland

Kate WylandToday I welcome Kate Wyland to Terry’s Place. Kate is the author of Wyoming Escape, a contemporary romantic suspense novel, and the recently released Forewarning, which is also romantic suspense but with a paranormal twist.

Setting: real, totally made up, or based on a real place?

Forewarning
is set in the Oregon Cascade Mountains, so it’s based on a real area, but not a real place. The ranch, the town, the names are totally made up. But I hope it reflects what it’s like to live there.

Which of...

Staying on Track

story tracking board, via Terry OdellI’ve been working on my next Mapleton Mystery, and am back to using my story tracking board. I didn’t use it for Jinx’s Blackthorne, Inc. book, mostly because I was lazy. No excuses; I didn’t take down the sticky notes from the previous book, and by the time I thought about it, I was so far into the book, the thought of recapping to that point was too daunting.

(Note-this was definitely a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ situation)

But for Gordon’s book, I cleaned off my board and went back to my tri...

It’s SOCIAL Media

What I’m reading: Hour of the Rose, by Christina Skye
Don’t forget—there’s still time to win a copy of Half Moon Bay by Helene Young. Scroll down to Tuesday’s post and leave a comment.

Hokey Pokey ClinicIf you’re reading this blog, odds are you’re well aware of all the social media—Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest—to name the biggies. Many people, authors included, tend to look at these as marketing outlets. But it’s important to remember the “Social” part of these sites.

Your audience probably isn’t coming to these...

What’s Cooking Wednesday — Apricot Kale and Quinoa Salad

Don’t forget to leave a comment on yesterday’s post to win a copy of Helene Young’s book, Half Moon Bay.

This recipe shared thanks to “Get Off Your Tush and Cook”. Again, if you’re not comfortable with quinoa (and I can’t see why not–it’s a yummy grain), you could substitute rice or pasta.

This is a perfect summer salad which is delicious and refreshing. A very healthy salad which is also perfect for vegans and vegetarians.
