In The Interview Room — Carol White

Carol WhiteToday I welcome Carol White to Terry’s Place. Carol is a playwright, novelist, and columnist. She’s giving away TWO of her eBooks to 1 lucky commenter.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

When I was writing for a Delray Beach publication, “Senior Scene,” I was asked to do an article on couples who renew their marriage vows. The publisher wanted something folksy so I arranged to visit a quaint chapel in Lake Worth, Florida, where a ceremony was scheduled. I inter...

Changes in Publishing

Last day to win a box of books! Scroll down to Saturday’s post for the link.

SSWS14A lot of the content of the seminars this year repeated what I’ve already recapped from last year’s conference, which you can find by searching for “Superstars” in this blog, so I’ll highlight some of the new stuff I heard this year.

There was an interesting panel given by editor Diana Gill of HarperCollins/Voyager covering changes in publishing. (Note: my impression was that a lot of these changes have been triggered...

Susperstars Writing Seminars 2014

What I’m reading: Tell No Lies, by Julie Compton

Superstars Writing SeminarsI’m down in Colorado Springs for the next few days, at the Superstars Writing Seminars. I won a scholarship last year, thanks to Kobo Writing Life, and this year I was invited back by Kevin J. Anderson to share some of my experiences with audio books and indie publishing. Since I’ll be super-busy, I’m going to hit some of the takeaway highlights from last year’s meeting, and later, I hope to share some of the new things I’ll be learning this yea...

What’s Cooking Wednesday — Sausage and Zucchini Soup

Don’t forget to enter my Box of Books contest. Also, the authors of Booklover’s Bench are giving away a Kindle Paperwhite + 8 other great prizes. Enter here.

Today’s recipe comes from Book Club member Kathy Perry, who can always be counted on for dishes that are easy to prepare, and yummy to eat. I made a double batch of this to take to our monthly pot-luck, which ended up being cancelled. I don’t regret having a lot of leftovers!

Nine Things I Learned After Getting Published

Erin MooreToday I welcome Erin Moore to Terry’s Place. Erin writes steamy paranormal romances, always follows the latest health fad, and needs to buy stock in Starbucks. She’s talking today about her experiences as a new author, and would welcome comments or thoughts.

1. Writing is hard work. I know all of the authors out there are thinking “duh” right now, but the hard part is not the plotting or character development; it’s the sheer slogginess of getting through a novel. That, combined with moments of...

Win A Box of Books

Thanks to all my Facebook Folks! I’ve hit my 2000 “Likes” goal on my Facebook Author Page.

Box of Books Giveaway from Terry OdellAs promised, I’m going to give away a box of books. Some of these are new, some are gently read. Some I picked up at conferences, some I read when I was a contest judge. Some are simply taking up too much room on my limited shelf space.

It’s not required that you have a Facebook account, or, if you do, that you’ve liked my page to enter. However, if you are one of my 2000+ “Likers” you can get an extra ch...

Friday Field Trip — Hawaii

Long, long, ago, when I lived in Miami, I was a member of a camera club, where I met today’s guest, Larry Johnson, who’s been gracious enough to send me a very substantial selection of his travel pictures. (And per my son, whom many of you “know”, Larry is the ONLY person on Facebook who should be allowed to post pictures of cats. This is because Larry is a professional cat/animal photographer and knows what he’s doing.) At any rate, because so much of the country is being blasted by severe w...

Listening as Editing

earThere are those who strongly advise reading your work aloud before sending out to your editor. I always said, “Yeah, I should do that,” but somehow never got around to it. It seemed almost embarrassing to read aloud. I’ve always hated doing readings when I give talks. And, besides, whenever I’d read anything out loud, the dog would look at me funny and leave the room. If you can’t stand the sound of your voice, people told me, there are programs, like Acrobat, that will read your work out lou...
