Rachel Reviews & Cuteness Attacks!

RACHEL REVIEWS

Here's a round-up of this week's links around the web on Rachel Rising #1:

ComicBookResources.com reviews Rachel's debut.

Playback:stl's Rude Chapbooks (Bryan Hollerbach) likes Rachel's debut.

3 Chicks Review Comics (great idea for a site, btw) chat about Rachel Rising.

Comicbook.com lets me talk about Rachel in the infancy of digital delivery, what I see in my windshield, and what I wish I would see. once thing to note here is the news that Jeff Smith signed with Comixology. As I say in the interview, Jeff hasn't made any wrong moves in his career, so this is something to keep an eye on.

MultiversityComics.com posted a thoughtful, comprehensive review of Rachel.

The guys at FFIC (Famous Faces & Funnies InvestComics) liked what they saw of Rachel and posted their review on YouTube (@ the 9:25 mark).

CUTENESS ATTACKS!

The posts around the net, on blogs, Twitter and Facebook, have been great since Rachel rose—the support is very much appreciated—but what is really exciting is seeing new names and faces reading my book. Honestly, what author wouldn't get a kick out of that?

But here's the question of the year…

Can Rachel rise above the glass ceiling of indy books and break into the Top 100? That would be a first for me. 18 years of books, and I've never been in the Top 100.  Ultimately, I don't decide that… you do. I know the comics industry is particularly preoccupied right now, but I'm going to do everything I can to make Rachel impossible to ignore.  Anything you can do to help her find recognition in our hero-centric comics world would be great, because everything you post gets reposted by a dozen other people and so on and when a lot of people talk about something, things happen. Will you help us: Rachel, me and this adorable kitten…?

That's right, I played the adorable kitten card. That's how serious I am. Are you with me?! Alright, alright, not a cat fan. I understand that. Forget the cat, think about all the baby seals.

I can do this all day, people. There are 6 trillion images on Google Images. So when you stop cooing over my little friends who depend so much on your comic support, please post your support for Rachel Rising. Let your retailers know. Let your favorite comics sites know: Rachel Rising is going to be big, because we're going to make it so.

Now go, before I post my baby monkey picture.

Too late!

Tomorrow I'll try bribing you with cookies.

ECHO ships Intern'l & Rachel Rising #1 Kills!

ECHO: The Complete Edition UPDATE: international orders will be accepted

After putting the hardcover and softcover up on our webstore—for the U.S. only— the demand to make it available for international orders has been loud and clear. So beginning tomorrow, Aug. 3, international orders will be accepted at our webstore. The original fear was for the safety of the big book making it past customs in some countries known for ripping up books. *cough!Belgium!cough!* I still don't think we would accept an order from Belgium, but we will ship most anywhere else now, because we heard from waaay more people than we thought possible about this. Thank you for your wonderful support. You make comics fun.

Shipping for International Orders Beginning Aug 4!

———

RACHEL RISING #1 hit today and it looks like we're off to a very good start. People really responded to the first issue. The Dragon (Guelph, Ontario) tweeted "And that's it! RACHEL RISING is sold out! Fastest moving Comic of the Week in a while!" After hearing about digital comics all year, it's a joy to see an old fashion comic book find enthusiastic readers. Or, in other words, "YESSSSS!"

So… good. I guess I better go ahead and make an issue two, huh? Okay, back to my cage. As you were.

Echo & Rachel Rising netlinks

Here's a video interview from the booth at SDCC last month, talking about the new books. I'm usually more energetic than this, but I remember being dead on my feet from all the work we did to get ready for the show, aaaand since there was NO ICE! anywhere in the convention center, I couldn't have one of my beloved cold soft drinks to perk me up. NO ICE!! How barbaric.

——

ComicMonsters.com interview with me posted today. Is horror possible without zombies? I say…

——

Westfield Comics posted a recent interview. We talk about the end of Echo and the next series, Rachel Rising.

——

Well… wow. You know you're on the radar when IMDB.com announces your comic series (ECHO) is about to end. They picked up the news from DigitalSpy.com, which in itself is pretty cool.

——

Don't forget, there is a longstanding website for you to visit, make friends and discuss all things STRANGERS IN PARADISE, PARADISE TOO, ECHO… and now RACHEL RISING. StrangersInParadise.org is a great place to hang out. I don't post there because it's not for me, it's for the stories and the fans. I've been so impressed with this community of good people who came together over a book and built up new friendships and stuck together over the years. You will be welcome there, too. Go. Visit. Eat some strawberry cake.

The New Books Are Here & Ready To Order!

(RACHEL RISING #4, coming November 2011)

Want to read a comic that will scare the life out of you? Read RACHEL RISING.

The premier issue, RACHEL RISING #1,  is now available at our web store, and should hit the stores next week. I say should, it's been on the trucks for two weeks. Look for the green cover in the sea of colors at your LCS.  I'm not saying any more until you've had a chance to read it.

The ECHO COMPLETE EDITION hardcover and softcover editions are now available on our web store. Please note: the hardcover is available only through us, whereas the softcover will be in stores soon—it has already shipped to the distributor and is trucking to stores everywhere.

The hardcover has the iconic image of Julie Martin in the alloy rain. The softcover has the sci-fi cover with the phallic Russian rocket (Yes, they looked like that. I'm telling you, the sixties were sexy.) The interiors are the same: all 30 issues of the series, a complete cover gallery and a bonus sketchbook. 624 pages total.

ECHO COMPLETE EDITION hardcover, $65

ECHO COMPLETE EDITION softcover, $40

And, may I just point out, or warn you, that these books are big. Way bigger than my blue Mini Cooper. See?

Of course, all those other books are huge, too. Maybe my car really is too small for grown people.

HOW TO DRAW: WOMEN is available at our web store and should be on the stands now. The premier issue looks at Women, literally and figuratively. This is not your basic anatomy book. Instead, it is designed to be read after you are comfortable with the basics. When it comes to performance, even art, you reach a point where talent takes you only so far. The rest is mental. This is your mental lesson.

Continuing the lessons, HOW TO DRAW #2 Expressions, coming November 2011…

This book fits in my Mini Cooper just fine, btw.

The 2011 Sketchbook is available at our web store. Full of extra art and commissions from the year, good and naughty!

By the way, if you like the cover art to the 2011 Sketchbook, you can purchase an 11 x 17 print through our web store.  This is a new drawing, recreating the cover to STRANGERS IN PARADISE VOl. 2, #12, with Francine and Katchoo happily illustrating the ties that bind. Price: $10.

Also available, the 2011 ECHO print made to commemorate the series finale. This is also an 11 x 17 inch print on heavy paper. I will sign all prints before they are shipped by magic elves. (note: both prints should be posted this weekend)

(another damn note: I don't add the TMA.com to all art posted, but the prints had no real identifier. Needless to say, the text is not on the actual prints.)

We went to the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International, debuted all the new books and prints posted here, and had one of our best shows ever.  Across the street, Trickster, a small informal spot for artists and their wares, was a breath of fresh air. When the media blitz and non-comics crowd became too much at the convention center, you could walk across the street to the Trickster wine bar, chat eye to eye with relaxed creators, sit on the deck with a drink and read the latest and greatest books by the best in the business.

All in all, I think it was a good show for most people, but I felt an undercurrent of tension among industry regulars: Longtime fans who can no longer get tickets to the show, creators who are concerned about their future as books and digital continue their sloppy transition. The next year or two are going to be a challenge for folks in the comic biz. Here's hoping we all find our way.

New sketches

I won't be sketching at San Diego. That would be like sketching during a plane crash. To hold you over, here are a few new ones I did before the trip.

The new Batgirl on call:

a young Darcy Parker:

Of all things, a request for a valkerie:

Ivy "Nuke The Scientists!" Raven:

Francine nude. Don't look unless you love her.

How big is the ECHO big book?

…bigger than my blue mini cooper, that's for sure. The book looks great. You can get your copy at SDCC starting Wednesday.

San Diego Schedule & Merch

Well, I don't think I've ever been so busy. The last 8 weeks have been a furious blur as I made books and prepared new materials for San Diego this week. But it was worth it, I hope. Tomorrow we head for San Diego with the following NEW goodies for you:

ECHO: The Last Day —The 6th and final trade paperback in the series, contains issues 26-30, for $15.99

ECHO: The Complete Edition —makes it debut at our booth this week! All 30 issues of the series, all the covers and a sketchbook gallery, 620 pages. Softcover edition, $39.99. Special SDCC Hardcover edition with silver foil cover & limited to 150 copies, $65

ECHO 2011 Print (NEW!)

SIP 2011 Print (NEW!)

RACHEL RISING #1 —the NEW Series, first issue hot off the presses! Stop by the booth and grab your copy before you can buy it anywhere else.

RACHEL RISING T-shirt (NEW!)  —the iconic cover of the first issue

2011 Sketchbook (NEW!) — 24-page collection of my sketches and original art.

How To Draw Women —we'll have a good supply at the booth for you

There, a lot of NEW! reasons to stop by and check out our booth. I will be there most of the time every day, from Wednesday's Preview Night—which is really almost a full day now— to Sunday closing.  I tend to go to lunch every day from about 12-2, so if you only have one chance to stop by and see me, that's a high-risk time.

I have only one panel that I know of, my Spotlight Panel on Saturday, 12-1 in room 9.  You might want to bring snacks.
