5 Signs 2016 is the Year of Consciousness
[As Seen in the Huffington Post] If you limit yourself to viewing a few corporate media outlets, you would never know humanity is becoming healthier, stronger, and more informed. Societal constraints bound by fear are losing their grip to rising optimism and the forces of evolution.
What coalesced as a paradigm shift in “entitled” Millennials is exploding as first-wave TransGenerationals (Generation Z) graduate high school. Looking out at the world as if they’ve seen it all before, the new attitude is, “I’m changing so fast, I dare you to try and define me.”
And they’re right. TransGens are asking themselves and each other “why” instead of parents and authority figures. Could we be witnessing a fractal leap in consciousness as we hit critical mass known as the 100th monkey effect?
“No one is free until we are all free.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Up until even the final moments of 2015, there was a palpable tension in the air. The media issued dire warning after warning to keep us in a global state of terror. Have you noticed that corporate media reports mostly on extremism rather than what’s occurring in the mainstream world?
That palpable tension was also felt by many as an underlying current that things are about to break loose–in a good way. Not only will you witness the coming explosion of consciousness, but you’re going to participate in it.
Why 2016 is the Year of Consciousness:
1) You are coming to know your worth. The Internet is a miraculous tool for allowing you to share what you’re good at and get immediate feedback. Creative people are taking this feedback, refining their expertise and message, and cashing in. Once bound miserably to jobs that brought no personal fulfillment, you are turning what you love to do into products and services for others who share your interests.
2) We’re having fun playing together. If you think technology has further separated you and me, we’re coming back together in a whole new way. Go for a jog in your neighborhood and some kid might point his phone at you, asking you for a shout-out on his YouTube channel. Social causes are bridging the gap between those in need and those with more than enough. We’re discovering that cooperation is a whole lot more fun than competition.
3) You’re driving consumerism instead of consumerism driving you. In won’t be in the headlines, but many corporations are in a panic as they attempt to reinvent themselves to remain relevant. We’re no longer blind to how products are manufactured and where we get our food. We now care about the animals, and the ground left behind. We’re asking you to care, too.
4) It’s about stewardship, not ownership. In debt for thirty years on a house or seven years on a new car? How about massive student loans? No, thank you. Like the crew of Apollo 13, we’re scrambling to construct alternative solutions, letting our inventions serve as new markets. The business of life needs to be dynamic, fluid, and sustainable whether we’re going up or coming back down.
5) A new trickle-up economy is emerging. If competition yields a loser for every winner, it’s collaboration that creates trickle-up. You finally understand that if I win, you win–and vice versa. We’re funding each other and buying locally. We’ve found our voice; we’re voting with our feet and volunteering. It’s just plain fun taking good care of one another.
Emerging is the sovereign being. Where one first turns within for answers and then to one another to collaborate. Our history books are filled with celebrated sovereign beings ahead of their time. Now it’s your turn.
When you know your true value, you can write your ticket to freedom. But, we must do it together. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “No one is free until we are all free.”

The Christmas Day Miracle of 1914 and the Coming Miracle of 2016
[As Seen in the Huffington Post] On Christmas Day of 1914, the miraculous occurred.
Men of differing nationalities called out “Merry Christmas” in the other’s native tongue. Cold, gunpowder-infused hands reached across abysmal trenches and cultural differences in search of the universal spirit of Christmas. What made these men unite to find joyful expression through song in a temporary truce?
The men were German and Allied troops along the Western Front in Europe just months after the outbreak of World War I. As make-shift presents such as cigarettes and plum puddings were retrieved from personal stashes and shared across enemy lines, what must have been going through the minds of the first soldiers who dared leave bunkers unarmed to celebrate the holiday?
Beyond the melancholy and even fear of death, all it had taken was one man to be inspired by Pope Benedict XV’s call earlier in the month for a temporary cease-fire. Like a spark leaping across dry tinder, an earnest plea had reverberated quietly in hearts and minds until at least one man dared the unthinkable.
But, he hadn’t acted alone. Maybe his overwhelming anguish on Christmas Eve had been felt so keenly by his trench mate, he too, was moved to consider the impossible. And so another—and then another. We may only be able to imagine what truly motivated those brave men to make the bold decision to drop their weapons. The point is—unity consciousness informed their thoughts that led to conscious action.
What makes it so miraculous is that peace swept up and down the Western Front without the aid texting, social media, or wireless internet. If they can do that, then what about the rest of us with voices that now have the ability to have our petitions heard around the world.
Let us now call our own truce. No more battles with our words. No more wars with those who don’t think, look or act like us. No more barreling through life swept away in fights “against” [fill in the blank]. No more thinking and acting so unconsciously, we barely register a heart beat.
It’s time for a new miracle—The Miracle of 2016. Let it be the Year of Consciousness. Rather than the stirring of a few, it’s time for the many to rouse from their collective slumber into the power of the awakened heart.
It only took us another 100 years. Come on all you Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, and TransGenerationals. May you keep a listening ear pressed to each other’s hearts and never forget. May you finally realize that all change begins with you. And may you step on the path of peace by being peace itself.
Finally, let us unite in a new song of gratitude. One in harmony with an abundant Earth that offers more than enough for every man, woman, and child to live very comfortably, even seven billion plus.
Working together cooperatively rather than competitively to manage our resources is the evolutionary leap mankind must make to ensure our survival. This time, we don’t have a hundred years.
I believe in miracles. And I believe in you.

The Tug of War for America’s Soul
[As Seen in the Huffington Post] A direct line to a TV newsroom for over ten years, I know the difference between journalism and theater. Last week’s extensive news coverage of the December 2 San Bernardino, CA attack leaving 14 dead culminated in the media descending on the carcass of the shooters’ apartment—the feeding frenzy staging at its best. The media asked us, if not demanded, “Are you afraid NOW?”
If you found last week’s dramatic news coverage warranted in light of the watershed moment this country, if not all of humanity, has found itself in, you’re not alone. The repercussions of what we do next will reverberate for generations to come.
The real battle isn’t the GOP’s America vs. Islam or even Democratic whispers for gun control. At stake is the soul of America. If America falls to racism and separatism once again, this time, we open the door for the rest of the world to follow our lead.
In Sunday night’s State of the Union address, President Obama said we cannot deny “the fact that an extremist ideology has spread within some Muslim communities.”
No greater extremity exists within human society than war itself, regardless of the flag it flies. True victory is found not through war, but rather over war. The thought processes that give rise to perpetual war in all of its forms must be examined for sustainability.
History reveals decades of failed over-reaching U.S. foreign policy in a region of the world where fleeting allies are bought and sold on a daily basis while simultaneously bloodied into submission by the biggest bullies on the block.
The billions spent by the CIA, directly and indirectly, advising, funding and providing arms to groups that went on to become the Taliban, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and Al Qaida exposes complicity in the global increase in terrorism. Blowback from the Iraq war’s destabilization of the Middle East has contributed to the rise of ISIL.
Short-term gains have resulted in long-term disaster for the rest of the world that never fails to trickle down to our doorstep. As a nation, we can continue to:
Expose home-grown extremism by those in and out of government.
Unite as a cooperative international community.
Commit to peace by realizing violence is the root cause of violence. This single statement is incredibly elementary, yet a violent person will never see the logic in it.
Demand accountability at all levels. It is the responsibility of nations and organizations where radicalism originates to takes steps to confront and address flawed ideology.
Enact strategic plans of peace-centered redirection, policy, and legislation.
As American citizens at home and abroad, it’s our responsibility to be this nation’s running boots on the ground. Together, our voices can and must be the unified voice of reason within our families, communities, and globally during difficult times.
Individually, we have the power to:
Remain courageous when others become fearful.
Examine inherited belief systems for limitation.
Realize safety in numbers through inclusiveness.
Cultivate higher consciousness by practicing mindfulness and participating in mass meditation for peace.
Seek out common ground, uniting through voice, vote, and volunteerism.
Extremism in any form is short-lived and limited under its own power. It literally destroys itself, qualifying it as an unnatural and unsustainable anomaly. It’s our response that determines whether or not we enable the abnormality to regenerate itself. This is no longer politics; it’s science.
The challenge is to use intelligence to ask ourselves if individual and collective thought, word, and action are rooted in unity or separation consciousness. One is the problem; the other the solution.
