If I’m Jack “the ripper” then the English language is a lone prostitute on a stroll through a gas lamp lit, dark and foggy alley.
I get it.
“Man’s got to know his limitations.” Harry Callahan- Magnum Force.
When I sent my first story to some relatives they told me I butchered the language.
Look it up people, editing is expensive! But I knew if I was going to sincerely try to make this a successful adventure I had to get an editor.
On LinkedIn I met an editor, Frank Kresen, and began negotiating costs, after a great deal I sent him my first books (I had already published on Smashwords) and he fixed them. On my next venture, Frank suggested I take some classes (that’s the polite version of “you are a moron.”) So I punished him by hiring him to edit An Angry Orange Sky.
Why would I do that? Please see the Dirty Harry quote above, I’m not easily offended, certainly not by the truth!
So I told Frank that I was a story teller not a grammar scholar and I needed him to fix my writing so that others (that appreciate the English language) would be able to comprehend my books.
Imagine the professor in Creative Writing class that I took while convalescing my knee re-construction in the 82nd airborne. My papers were one red pen mark, but she told me she really liked my imagination and the stories I (tried to) write!
An unknown author like me really needs to have feedback, I’ve had some great reviews so far from some folks and I know they would email or private message me if I should give up and look for “real” work but I find myself always looking for the unknown reader/review.
Yesterday I decided to post my new cover for A HINT OF SILVER- on LinkedIn, (yes in hopes that it would get a few people interested in a sale)
And Frank left the following message:
Frank Kresen
Founder (1985)/Sole Proprietor of PROOF POSITIVE, Kansas City's premier proofreading and copy-editing…
I am about halfway finished with the copy editing of this, Mark's third Gordan Hudde book.
Hudde is like every man's wildest fantasy about what kind of man he would like to be. Gordan's cool confidence under pressure and against impossible odds never feels contrived — it comes very naturally to him. He is absolutely undaunted in any "Parking Lot Situation" (you'll have to read the book....).
With each book in the Gordan Hudde Series, I have seen Mark grow by leaps and bounds as an author — with this one leading the way. His rich detail and seamless integration of disparate subplots and multitudes of characters is quickly becoming his forte.
A HINT OF SILVER is extra-special, in that it is the first of the Gordan Hudde Series in which Gordan reveals anything of substance about his past life.
A HINT OF SILVER is a tour-de-force examination of the demonically evil world of The Sick F*ck Villain. You will want to put the book down in disgust, but — I guarantee you — you won't be able to. You will love this book.
I had just run a few dollars’ worth of ads which netted me almost 600 extra people at my Blog, I had just run a promotion on Amazon and gave away 20 Deep Purple Hue books for free, and I didn’t generate a single sale, I didn’t get a (real) single new review (I did get one person who wanted Franks job give a poor review- so obvious.)
Anyway, I’d like to thank Frank (it was a jolt of confidence), and also encourage others to try A HINT OF SILVER- remember, this was just the first half; trust me it gets better!

Another Blank Page?
I have written two books, A Deep Purple Hue and A Retail Investigator. Sitting with Jimmy was a short story based on my love for that cat; that in the beginning I wanted nothing to do with. I have to tell you what an amazing experience it is to live in your imagination so much every day after 32 years in the real world. My current book, An Angry Orange sky, (I think) is going to be a fantastic read. I have thoughts about my next Gordan Hudde book already brewing. The main character is not superhuman, he possesses no special powers; he is a guy that trained hard and is completely comfortable with danger. That’s not to say he doesn’t plan or isn’t afraid at times it’s just that he expects it out of life. A point where he and I are the same is the people explaining to him “you can’t do it” and he will not give up. Also in my writing (so far) I am not eagerly trying to wow the reader with the “Oh I didn’t expect that” moment, I would rather have the reader see the problem and then try to figure out how to solve it themselves; how does Gordan Hudde solve it is the mystery and how well does it get solved? Please by all means read my books, and then review them; I’m not ready to give up and your review may be the one that helps me get over a hurdle.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The self-published author
Good 8/4/2015 morning,
Everything I read is about getting your name and the names of your books out there. 1/3 of your work dedicated to writing your books and 2/3 to promotion. So here I am, writing my 4th book and now on multiple websites, Facebook and twitter accounts to boot. I am a private person, never thinking that I would one day be doing this, but I enjoy the writing and if I ever become successful, this is how it all began.

Sitting with Jimmy
My wife forced me to meet Jimmy the feral cat; I grew to like him. I spent the summer of 2014 taking care of him while my wife went home to take care of her mother; I grew to love him. He spent the latter part of 2014 and the beginning of this year learning to enter our home and be able to relax from the riggers of fending for himself. This summer (2015) I now morn his loss taken by a bobcat that had been hanging around our neighborhood. I hope his story brings a smile to you as getting to know him, and remembering him brought/brings a smile to us. Jimmy, you were a "good kitty!"
