Words of Comfort: Rejection and hatred.

Evangelism is an arduous task. None of us like the rejection and hatred that come from proclaiming the truth in a sin-loving world. However, in light of the love of God that was expressed toward us through the cross, the task is not burdensome (see 1 John 5:3). We delight to do His will.

Words of Comfort: The ladder.

“Christ…is this ladder: the foot on earth in his human nature, the top in heaven in his divine nature; or the former is his humiliation, the latter is his exaltation. All the intercourse between heaven and earth since the fall is by this ladder. Christ is the way: all God’s favors come to us, and all our services come to him, by Christ. If God dwell with us, and we with him, it is by Christ: we have no way of getting to heaven but by this ladder; for the kind offices the angels do us, are all...

Words of Comfort: Speak volumes.

If someone asks you a question, while you are open-air preaching, that you don’t know how to answer, simply say, “I’m sorry, I don’t know the answer to that, but I will try to find it for you, if you like.” There’s nothing wrong with a humble admission. In fact, it may speak volumes more to your hearers than an eloquent answer.

Words of Comfort: Preach in the shower.

If you’re fearful about preaching open-air for the first time, practice at home before doing it “live.” Go over the gospel in your mind until it’s second nature—no, until it’s first nature. When you are alone, preach it. (In the shower is a great place to preach.) Go through a few anecdotes. Get used to the sound of your own voice. Pretend to engage a heckler. Invite some friends over to role-play with you—and practice what you preach.

If you are afraid of looking foolish if you mentally draw...

Words of Comfort: Just do it.

To get started in open-air preaching, keep in mind that you are needed to “go into the world,” so don’t listen to your fears; just do it. If you have ever felt the joy of sharing the gospel with someone who is genuinely listening to every word you are saying, multiply that by 30. That’s a good open-air session. There’s nothing like it when you have a good heckler, and a crowd of people listening to the words of everlasting life.

Words of God: To the ends of the earth!

As sons of God, we are commanded to take the gospel to the ends of the earth (see Acts 1:8).
“Ultimately, evangelistic apathy is not a methodological failure; it is spiritual disobedience. The Bible is replete with commands and admonitions to communicate passionately the Gospel with others. Our failure to do so is nothing less than sinful disobedience to the God who gave us unmerited favor through His Son, Jesus Christ.” Thom Rainer

Words of Comfort: Will you see God?

This doesn’t mean that Isaac saw the essence of God. No man can see God and live (see Exod. 33:20). Isaac saw a manifestationof God, as did Moses and others. The only way a man or woman can stand in the presence of God without being consumed by His holiness is to be pure of heart. That can come only by God’s mercy through the blood of the cross. All who are made pure in heart through faith in Jesus will see God (see Matt. 5:8).

Words of Comfort: Back to the filth.

The false convert has never “crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal. 5:24). He, like the pig, must go back to wallowing in the mire. Pigs need to wallow in mire because they crave the slime to cool their flesh. So it is with the false convert. He never repented, so his flesh was not crucified with Christ. It is instead burning with unlawful desire. The heat of lust is too much for his sinful heart. He must go back to the filth.

Words of Comfort: Pearls & swine.

Esau gave up his precious birthright because of the cravings of his flesh. Those who make a profession of faith without having a humble heart (which the Law produces) have the experience described in 2 Pet. 2:22: “‘A dog returns to his own vomit,’ and ‘a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.’” This is the tragic result of casting pearls of the gospel of grace to the proud, or those whom the Bible calls “dogs” and “swine.”

Words of Comfort: Didn't die without hope.

Abraham did not die without hope. Jesus said that he rejoiced to see His day: “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56). Abraham was made righteous by grace through faith in the coming Messiah. “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, ‘In you all the nations shall be blessed’” (Gal. 3:8).
