November Reading List

On my bedside table this month, two interesting novels by New Zealand writers, excellent women's fiction set in Australia, and an exciting YA fantasy due for release next year.

The 10pm Question by Kate DeGoldi

This looks fascinating. From the back cover: 'Frankie Parsons is twelve going on an old man: an apparently sensible, talented Year 8 with a drumbeat of worrying questions steadily gaining volume in his head.'

The Invisible Road by Elizabeth Knox

I had difficulty getting through...

Today is the official publication date for the American and Australian editions of Heart's Blood. I'm getting some great feedback on the book already.

An interview with me is up today on Writer Unboxed. Post a comment on the interview by Nov 8 and you could win a free copy of Heart's Blood. On Thursday November 5 my regular monthly post will be up on the same site, discussing the process for building a novel from a fairy tale.

Health update

I'm finished my seven weeks of radiotherapy - cause for celebration! I'm now on a schedule of daily medication and annual scans. My hair is growing back, my skin is healing up and I generally feel a lot better.

I won't be posting health updates from now on. However, please remember that I've had breast cancer this year, and be understanding if I am not writing quite as quickly as I did before.

October reading list

On my bedside table in October:

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

This confronting memoir was being read aloud on ABC radio while I was driving to and from the hospital for my treatment. I missed the last few episodes, and was so riveted by the author's analytical approach to a year of truly terrible personal loss that I knew I had to read the whole book.

An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon

The next ginormous instalment of the Jamie and Claire saga. I may well save this to read...

Health update

I now have only a week and a half to go before my radiotherapy treatment is all finished! After that, I will be on daily medication for five years and having regular checks. The statistics for surviving breast cancer in my circumstances are very good. Once treatment is finished I will have more writing time and, I hope, more energy.

Female readers, it's really important to take the right preventative steps where breast cancer is concerned. This means regular self-examination, regular checks...

New edition of Bridei books

I just saw some draft covers for the new editions of the Bridei books from Pan Macmillan Australia - they're beautiful! The books will be in B format paperback, which is bigger than a mass market edition but smaller than a trade paperback. These should be available in a few months' time.
