Short Story - Mending Wall

Prompt: Mending Wall by Robert Frost.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out,

Seth sat at his desk in the back of his sixth period math class. He glanced at Rachel, a pretty ginger haired girl, who sat in the opposite corner, she smiled at him. He blushed and quickly averted his eyes then focused on his desk. He closed his eyes and envisioned the wall again. Would it hold? Would Rachel stay on her side? God forbid she should cross over. She was reported to be a savage and terrible beast, a monster of incredible proportions. He sighed and placed a shaking hand on the wall to see if it was secure. He could sense it crumbling under her terrible barrage of blows; relentless creature that she was. If she broke through all would be lost, or would it? It would end his solitary existence, his comfortable tomb, his season of quiet.            After another blow from her great spiked tail the wall came tumbling down. The tall, horned creature stepped over the fallen debris and approached him, He stumbled backwards and she pursued him. Would she devour him or simple torture him? Would his death be swift and painless or slow and cruel. He shook with terror and ran. She kept pace with him with her long powerful legs. He glanced back and she grinned at him with her long pointy teeth. "Seth you may run, but I will have you. You will be mine."              Just then the late bell rang and Seth looked up from his desk and cautiously glanced about. Rachel adjusted her hair to hide her horns then shyly smiled at him and waved. He forced a smile and took a deep breath of courage then waved in return.

Let me know what you think. grantswritingstuff@gmail.com

DIVERGING CADENCE BLOG TOUR - KATIE HAMSTEAD

A Second Chance at Life
About Diverging Cadence:
When Cadence Anderson woke to find her husband and infant daughter had been killed, she thought her life was over. Instead, she was offered a second chance and sent back in time to do it all again. She’s made the most of this opportunity, repairing her relationship with the best friend she lost the first time, avoiding the romantic mistakes she made originally, and even bringing her family closer together. But she’s also done something she wasn’t planning on—she’s fallen in love with someone other than her future husband.
Stepping onto a plane and flying across country to attend university is the hardest decision she’s had to make. But unless she follows through with it, her future with Austin might never happen. And what becomes of her beautiful baby if she stays with James, the man she was never supposed to love?
The only thing she knows for certain is that she has to see Austin again, and she’s intent on reliving that part of her previous life exactly like she did the first time. Even if that means she has to lie to James to do it. Because, deep down, she can’t quite bring herself to let him go.
Now, past and future are about to collide, and Cadence has to make her final choice—follow the uncertain path of a life with James, or the one she came back to save . . . with Austin.
In this emotional conclusion to the story that began in Deceptive Cadence, relationships will be tested, identities revealed, and the past will overshadow the future, putting the finishing touches on an unforgettable tale of courage, sacrifice, and, above all, love.Get Diverging Cadence from Amazon or other retailers today!

DIVERGING CADENCE: Excerpt 1We pulled into the car park, and I thought I would be sick. I sat in the car, unable to move as Tara and Lyla climbed out. I kept thinking about James, then Austin, then James . . .The door flung open and Tara climbed over me—probably flashing everyone behind her—to unbuckle me. “Get out, Cadence!”She grabbed my arm and gave it a sharp tug. Lyla grabbed my other arm to help her. They dragged me over to the short line waiting to get past the bouncer and wrapped their arms through mine to prevent me from running. It only took a few minutes before we were allowed inside. We walked through a dark hallway, and I started to hyperventilate.“Geez, Cadence!” Tara hissed. “Anyone would think you went to a Catholic girls’ school or something!”We stepped through the door, my mind flipping between James and Austin. James, Austin, James, Austin . . .And then there he was, sitting by the bar with his friends. Three girls hovered nearby and chatted to him occasionally, making his wide, easy smile spread across his face. He looked incredible. He wore a dark blue dress shirt that hung open to reveal the white Bond chesty underneath. The tight top enhanced his muscular form, and I couldn’t help lingering over his pecs and abs. He wore dark jeans and black shoes, giving him a casual appearance, yet incredibly sexy all at once. He rubbed the scruff on his face, which seemed to serve as a symbol of his masculinity.Tara elbowed me and giggled. “Stop staring.”My cheeks warmed. “Sorry.”“Really, Cadence, you should let him in. You’re so into him, and he’s only holding off because he thinks you want him to.”I glanced back over and saw the three girls surrounding him as he leaned back onto his elbows. Images of him stepping out of the shower when we were married flashed into my mind. An inferno blazed in my cheeks and I shook off the thoughts. “It doesn’t look like he’s holding off for me.”“Cadence . . .”I hurried away onto the dance floor with Lyla in tow. We danced together, but I soon noticed that Tara hadn’t joined us. Scanning the room, I saw her talking to Austin. He smiled. I turned my attention back to Lyla.Lyla noticed. “That’s him, right?”“Ah . . .” Then it dawned on me. This was the night Austin and I got together in the first timeline. If I wanted to know what would happen between us, this was the moment. “Yeah.”“You should talk to him.”I winced. “Oh no, I don’t think I could.”“Cadence, you look smoking hot tonight. It’s the perfect time to get his attention.”“I, ah . . .” I ran my fingers through my hair hanging loose over my shoulder. “I want to, but he’s surrounded by girls. I can’t compete with that.”She sighed. “Okay, Cadence.”A short while later, she excused herself to go to the bathroom. Then, she did exactly what she’d done in the first timeline: she made her way over to Austin. She stood beside Tara and wrapped her arm through hers as they both talked to him. After a brief exchange, he straightened, his attention piqued. He glanced over to me, and I let our eyes connect. He smiled, and I smiled back. He moved toward me, so I spun to dance as sexy as I could. I had no idea what I was doing. I was still with James, but the memories of my marriage with Austin and all the wonderful, happy times we shared overwhelmed me.Sensing his presence behind me, I raised my arms up and ran my hands through my hair and over my curves. As my hands reached my hips, his hands rested over them. I paused, then slipped my hands out from under his and turned to face him.His hands rested on my waist as our eyes met. He smiled. My cheeks rushed with heat, but I didn’t look away.“So . . . ah . . .” His right hand came up and he offered it to me. “I was wondering if you’d be okay if I introduced myself to you. Austin Jones.”I slid my hand into his and electricity shot through my arm. Squeezing his hand, I responded, “Cadence Anderson.”His smile widened as our hands broke apart. The hand he kept on my waist crept around to the small of my back, and he shifted closer to me.I rested mine on his chest as I admired his masculine beauty.“Do you wanna dance?”My gaze pulled away from his chest to meet his eyes. “I would like that.” With his arm still around me, he guided me away from my friends, losing us in the crowd. Once we were alone, he pulled me against him. My hands were far more troublesome than his as they explored his chest, shoulders, and arms. But he didn’t protest. He kept his eyes firmly locked with mine as I explored his new, yet familiar, body.

I am honored to be part of Vicki Leigh's cover reveal.
FIND ME IF YOU DARE is Vicki Leigh's upcoming YA dark urban fantasy.
Here is the cool front cover.

Here is the Flap.

Blurb:
They may have won the first battle, but the Apocalypse has just begun.

Five weeks have passed since the battle that left Rome and Columbus in ruins. Sheltered in the hidden city of Caelum, Daniel and Kayla train alongside over one hundred Magus and Protectors, hoping that their unified ranks will be enough to take down their greatest threat yet: Richard, his followers, and his horde of Nightmares. Then a fallen comrade is returned to Caelum with a message carved into his chest and a note referencing the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Daniel knows their time for training is over.

Finally understanding Richard’s plans for Kayla and the three other Magus born on Halloween, Daniel and the rest of Caelum’s volunteers scout the U.S. in a desperate attempt to stop their enemy before he can unleash his first Horseman. But when massive attacks claim thousands of lives, people all over the world begin to fall ill—including those Daniel and Kayla care about the most.

With the Horseman of Pestilence released, Daniel knows it’s time to step aside and let Kayla take the lead. Only she has the power to rival her father’s. But when Richard’s plot turns out to be darker than they imagined, their fight is met with more death and destruction—and an enemy who might be unbeatable, after all.

Blog Tour - Excerpt Deceptive Cadence - Katie Hamstead

I am honored to be part of Katie Hamstead's blog tour for her new book.

Here is an excerpt from Deceptive Cadence.

James stood waiting as I climbed off the bus in the morning. My friends didn’t disperse like usual, but hung back to watch as he walked straight toward me. I stepped around him as he tried to cut me off, but he followed. “It’s my birthday.”“I heard.”“I’m sixteen now.”“I don’t care.”“Sweet sixteen gets a kiss.”“That’s not how the saying goes.”We passed through a gap between buildings and he grabbed my waist, spinning me to face him. “No one’s around. No one will see. Let me kiss you.”“No.”I stepped back, but he kept after me. “Why are you making this so hard?”“You’re still, ah . . . you’re, ah . . .”He ran his hand down my arm again. I couldn’t think. He caught my hand and pulled me closer.“I’m a what?”He touched my face and tucked my hair behind my ear. I looked up into his eyes, entranced by the intensity that burned in them.“I’m not supposed to like you.”His arm wrapped around my waist. “But you do?”“Mmm . . .” My gaze fell to his lips as they drew closer to mine. “Stop.”He paused, barely an inch away from my lips. “I’ll never force you to do anything. If you don’t wanna kiss me, I’ll back away right now.”My heart skipped a beat as my eyes lifted to his. Then, impulsively, I grasped his face and pulled his lips against mine. It tasted delicious, warm, and made me dizzy with the excitement that shot through me. I wanted more. I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding him tightly. He pushed me against the wall as his arms clamped around my waist. We kissed open mouthed, the intensity making my whole body tingle with excitement. His hands caressed my back, and his fingers ran through my hair.We only stopped because the bell rang.I pulled away from his lips, but didn’t let him go. “Oh my gosh . . .”A crooked smile flashed across his face. “Let’s skip school today, just you and me, and we’ll go hang out somewhere―”“No, I can’t.” I stroked his cheek. He softly pressed his lips against mine. “Why not?”“I’m not like you. I want to get good grades. I want to go to class.”“Just once, that’s all I’m asking.”I shook my head and forced myself away from him. “I can’t.”“Cadence . . .”“You got your kiss, James.” I hurried away, heading straight for my class.I flopped down beside Michael, but kept my head low. How could I have feelings for James? This was a totally new development, something that blindsided me.“Cadence? Hello?”Michael’s voice startled me so much I almost fell off my seat. “What?”“Where were you this morning?”“At home, then here at school.”“No, I meant why didn’t you show up at the table?”My cheeks burned, and I turned away, raising a textbook in front of me to hide my red face.“Did you hook up with someone?”“No.”“You did!” He grasped the book and lowered it so he could look into my eyes. “Was it James Gordon?”My face burned even hotter. “No!”“Cadence, you did!”I shoved his shoulder. “No, I didn’t!”“So, you guys are an item now?”“No.”“Wow, you’re making it really hard for him.”I leaned closer and whispered, “He wanted me to skip school with him. I can’t date someone who’d want me to do that.”Michael’s eyebrow rose. “You can’t be serious.”“I am serious.”“What’s happened to you, Cadence? You’ve always been a good girl, but you used to be daring, too. Over the last few months, you’ve become a real prude.”My mouth snapped shut as I stared at him in shock.“Yeah, you heard me right. You’re one of my best friends, but lately you’ve been pretty boring.”“Are you saying I should’ve skipped school with a guy I barely know and has a reputation for drug use and generally being a huge jackass?”“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”My eyes widened. “Are you serious?”“Well, okay, realistically if he was still that way, I’d say no, but he’s been changing to get your attention. Did you know he was even seen in class yesterday?”I saw the odds piling up against me. Michael thought I should date him, and Geri did too, and if I was completely honest with myself, I wanted to as well. I dropped my head into my hands, trying to force my feelings for Austin to surface, but they seemed to be buried deep within me, lost in some abyss of alternate reality. What was happening to me? My feelings from that time seemed to be just labels attached to images in my head, not real at all.“You should give James a chance,” Michael said.
I gnawed on my lip. My feelings for James were so raw and real, but my feelings for Austin, try as I might, simply felt like a dream.

Short Story - Cinderella

Head of a women by Leonardo Davinci
Cinderella
Prompt:"Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this was a gift." Mary Oliver
The teenage girl looked at the mop bucket full of grey water with a few dying soap bubbles still floating in place. She thrust her hand into the icy water and retrieved a scrub brush. Shaking the extra water off she resumed her attack on the sludge that covered the stone slate floor.             The large manor house would have been considered a fortunate abode if she did not have to clean its vast halls by hand. But alas it was her lot to assist the servants since money could not be spared for additional help. The family’s fortune was being spent to provide Anastasia and Drusilla; her stepsisters, the proper attire of fine ladies.             She shifted on the floor to ease the throbbing pain in her knees and in her back. She glanced up and was started by loud pounding at the front door. Raymond, their butler, briskly walked up to the door as if he was expecting someone. He opened the door wide and a rabble rushed inside the great hall.             Her stepmother and her stepsisters rushed forward in their fine gowns. ‘What is the meaning of this?” demanded her stepmother.            “How dare a rabble of fools come in such a state!” yelled Drusilla.            Anastasia smirked. “Now off with you before we call the watch. Raymond, throw these black-guards out!”            The butler smiled a thin smile. “My ladies, I no longer work for you. These men are now in charge.”            The leader of the band smiled a toothy grin. “Long live the French Revolution.  Because of the injustices of the aristocracy the poor people are rising up and taking what they deserve and you my ladies are going to that prison that you so richly deserve. Let them eat cake indeed.”             The three women were then grabbed and led away. As they walked past Cinderella Anastasia pointed at her stepsister and said, “She, she is one of us, if we are going to prison she should go as well.”
The leader glanced at the girl in rags with a brush in her hand then back at Anastasia. “You demand she serve you in prison as well?  Be assured that this poor girl will never have to do your bidding again. Now off with you.”

First Chapter - Angelica the Barbarian

 Christina Vichi

Here are the first few pages of my upcoming novel "Angelica the Barbarian" This is a YA fantasy set in the middle ages England. Angelica a sixteen-year-old witch who  becomes a ladies maid to the Princess. She must protect the princess from kidnappers and being married off to the Spanish. I am in the process of submitting it for publication.

Angelica the BarbarianCHAPTER 1                                                                    Going Home

(updated 08/17/2015)      Angelica felt a hand gently shaking her. She responded by pulling the covers over her head, and hugging her pillow tighter. The shaking became rougher. She finally opened her lavender eyes and peered out of the covers. There stood Granny Mildred with a handful of green fire to light the room.
“Lazy girl, you need to be up and about; we've important matters to discuss.”     Angelica pushed the mop of raven hair out of her yes and looked up at the patchwork of tiny windows in the ceiling and saw no light to challenge the darkness. “Granny, it isn’t even twilight yet, let me sleep.” She hid her head under the quilt again.     The old woman grabbed the covers with her free hand and yanked them off the teenage girl. Angelica grabbed the fleeing covers and fought to retrieve them. “There is no more sleeping for you, now get up.” Granny made her way into the other room, taking the blanket with her.      The willowy girl curled up in a ball for a moment. The memories of her dream were fleeing like a black stallion running through a mist. She considered, was it Henry the carpenter’s son she had been kissing or Elijah the minstrel? Ugh. She made a face, sat up and tentatively stepped onto the cold stone floor. She grabbed a robe and quickly pulled it over the thin shift she had worn to bed. She hurried into the great room and perched herself next to the fire where a pot of mint tea was brewing.      After warming her bones, Angelica sat at the table and regarded the old witch with sleepy, glazed eyes. “Granny, what is so important you need to wake me up in the middle of a sweet dream? Now I can’t remember which boy I had been kissing.”     Granny poured Angelica some tea and gave her some toast to butter. “Dreams about kissing boys? No wonder you don’t want to get up.” She thought for a moment then added, “The boy you were kissing was that silly minstrel if you must know; now enough foolishness. I told you we have important matters to discuss.” She took Angelica’s hands and stared at her intently. “Child, I received a message from your mum late last night. She said it is vital you return home immediately.”      Angelica’s eyes widened. “What is it? Is something wrong with the family? Has Margaret finally agreed to marry that miscreant Luther?!”     The witch gave Angelica a wan smile. “No, no, everyone’s well enough off, just …well, your mum; she’s made plans for your future. She asked me not to tell you what they are. You'll find out when you return home.”     Angelica’s face went pale. “Bloody-hell! She has gone and married me off. Well I won’t go, they can’t make me. I’ll stay here with you. I’ll change, you’ll see. I won’t torment Smugget anymore and I’ll be good to your patients. I’ll even-”     Granny raised both hands “Stop, stop! Don’t get yourself worked up. It’s not a marriage proposal yet. Don’t let your imagination get carried away with you.” She put on a composed face. “Your mum loves you and has your best interests at heart. You need to learn to trust her.”     Not the mum loves you speech, this really is bad. Angelica summoned the jelly jar and slathered jelly all over her bread. “Could you at least hint about what this is regarding?”     Granny lightly spanked Angelica’s hand when the girl attempted to put her finger in the jelly pot. “Girl, I have enjoyed these winters we spent together, I feel you’ve become a fine witch and have reformed reasonably well. Now you're sixteen it’s time for you to take the next step in your life.”      Angelica looked up at her grandmother then fought back a sob. She stood up and embraced the old woman and kissed her on a wrinkled cheek. After wiping away a tear she said, “Thank you for putting up with me when no one else would. Not only do I promise I won’t get into any more trouble; I promise to conduct myself in a proper and pleasing manner.”     Granny wiped away a tear from her cheek, then with a twinkle in her eye, she said, “Don’t make promises you have no intention of keeping.” She rose up on her tippy toes and kissed Angelica’s forehead.     The girl returned to her room and put on her new dress. Granny had made it for her birthday. It was dyed a light green, with darker green leather leaves connected with a vine pattern. Behind each leaf was a magical pocket, looking small from the outside, but large enough on the inside to contain what was needed. Furthermore, she was the only one who could reach inside the pockets. These she filled with her potions, needle and thread, socks, combs, and several jars of jam she was able to pilfer when granny was not looking.     While Angelica packed, Granny went next door and woke Smugget, her assistant, and gave him instructions regarding the care of their patients.      Picking up her walking stick and a large leather traveling bag; the old witch walked to the doorway and gave a final instructions to the dwarf, then Angelica and Granny walked down the path that wound its way through the ancient, magical forest which surrounded the cottage. When they came to a bend in the trail Angelica looked back for one final glimpse of the house where she had spent the last six winters. It was built of black volcanic rock with hundreds of small windows made of brightly colored glass. From a distance it appeared to be covered with butterflies and in the twilight they glowed.      Angelica addressed three giant oak trees, “Argot, Hannibal and Siena, I’ll miss you. Watch over Granny while I'm gone.” She touched each tree which gave a gentle shutter then she and Granny began their journey to her home.
#
The journey from the Everlasting Hills to Northumberland, where Angelica’s family lived, took two days. This was the journey Angelica had taken every autumn and every spring since she was ten years old. Two things brought this about: Angelica’s penchant for trouble and her parents’ notion that time spent with her grandmother would help reform her. Of course with her budding magical abilities it was a natural fit, given that Granny Mildred was a mountain witch.      After they had traveled for a ways Granny stopped and called on a mother with a new baby. Angelica waited outside and entertained the older children. She had picked up a stick and was pretending it was a sword, beheading Lazy-Susan’s and daffodils. “Take that you black-guard and take that you pus brain. You’ll learn to insult Angelica the Barbarian.” Soon half a dozen children were standing next to her madly attacking the flowers alongside the road.     She was interrupted by a high pitched yell. She glanced at the flower she had just beheaded, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to …” she quickly realized the noise was coming from the meadow. Climbing over the fence, she saw a man who had been gored by a bull. The beast was standing over him angrily bellowing and shaking its head.
Running at the bull and frantically waving her stick, she yelled, “Lucifer, get away from him!” The bull turned and considered her then charged. Bloody-hell that was a brilliant move.
Angelica turned and ran . . .

Treasure Darkly - Blog Tour

Beware a Treasure Darkly…
(The stunning cover art is thanks to Amalia Chitulescu)Seventeen-year-old Clark Treasure assumes the drink he stole off the captain is absinthe…until the chemicals in the liquid give him the ability to awaken the dead.
