Description:
They may have won the first battle, but the Apocalypse has just begun.
Five weeks have passed since the battle that left Rome and Columbus in ruins. Sheltered in the hidden city of Caelum, Daniel and Kayla train alongside over one hundred Magus and Protectors, hoping that their unified ranks will be enough to take down their greatest threat yet: Richard, his followers, and his horde of Nightmares. Then a fallen comrade is returned to Caelum with a message carved into his chest and a note referencing the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Daniel knows their time for training is over.
Finally understanding Richardâs plans for Kayla and the three other Magus born on Halloween, Daniel and the rest of Caelumâs volunteers scout the U.S. in a desperate attempt to stop their enemy before he can unleash his first Horseman. But when massive attacks claim thousands of lives, people all over the world begin to fall illâincluding those Daniel and Kayla care about the most.
With the Horseman of Pestilence released, Daniel knows itâs time to step aside and let Kayla take the lead. Only she has the power to rival her fatherâs. But when Richardâs plot turns out to be darker than they imagined, their fight is met with more death and destructionâand an enemy who might be unbeatable, after all.
About The Author:Adopted at three-days-old by a construction worker and a stay-at-home mom, Vicki Leigh grew up in a small suburb of Akron, Ohio where she learned to read by the age of four and considered being sent to her room for punishment as an opportunity to dive into another book. By the sixth grade, Vicki penned her first, full-length screenplay. If she couldnât be a writer, Vicki would be a Hunter (think Dean and Sam Winchester) or a Jedi. Her favorite place on earth is Hogwarts (she refuses to believe it doesnât exist), and her favorite dreams include solving cases alongside Sherlock Holmes.
My Review-Between the protectors and the magus, there is quite a bit of action. After the battles you have healers to patch them back together, then they are read to go at it again. I felt this story was fast paced with a generous portion of action and mayhem along with romance. I loved the characters Leigh created here. I felt the chapters breezing by, it was a fun read. The dystopian world was inventive and fun. Though there was a great deal of collateral damage; a lot more innocent people were killed than those who were actually involved with the conflict. But I suppose that just raises the stakes.
I give it 4 and a half stars

Cover Reveal - ACNE, ASTHMA, AND OTHER SIGNS YOU MIGHT BE HALF DRAGON - Rena Rocford
I'm honored to be part of Rena Rocford's cover reveal for her upcoming YA novel. I think the cover is awesome and I love the title. I think girls that are part dragon have a certain kick ass bite your head off and toast your bones charm. My upcoming novel Angelica the Barbarian has a scene where she turns into a dragon as well. Of all the different perspectives you can create in a story the view through the eyes of a monster is one of my favorites.

Rena RocFord
Author Bio:Like most mad scientists, Rena Rocford’s early works were largely met with scorn and mockery, but she bided her time. After all, what did her fellow kindergarteners know about literature? From that day forward, Rena kept her writing on the mythical back burner as she pursued more logical goals. Today, crayons. Tomorrow, the world. She moved on to essays and egg drops, followed by experiments in shady laboratories. She tried her hand at everything, learning from anyone who would teach her. She even moonlighted as a horseback riding instructor.Admittedly, living as a muggle brought Rena some levels of success such as completing her master’s degree, but always the stories returned, calling her to the keyboard in the dark of night. Short Story - Fireflies - Grant Eagar

On Neighbors
The Fireflies
We remember when the kids were little and the times we would go on long Sunday walks. The kids would run about chasing fire flies and we felt like we were surrounded by angels. We had dreams of their futures, what they would one day become. We had the conviction that if we raised them the best we were able, everything would turn out alright. Fast forward twenty years - the children have all been bitten and infected by the demons of our day; alcoholism, drug abuse, divorce, mental illness, and autism. We try to suck the venom from their seeping wounds and love them the best we are able. Occasionally we roar and yell at them, but that doesn’t make the sickness and the pain go away. We avoid the ‘I told you so’s and stick to safe topics of conversion while a small part of us dies as our dreams for them fade into the distance. These dreams are replaced by their own dreams. Since they are the ones who must bear the consequences of their choices, they must make those choices. We are all broken - when we were young we were concerned with those who had failed us, but as we grow older we are now concerned with those whom we have failed. The price we must pay for our own selfishness. The grand kids come and we hug them, play ball with them, play ring around the roses with them, tell them stories, and hold them. For a moment we are young again surrounded by our little ones and we experience the joy once again of raising children.
Then we smile - things are turning out, but just not how we had planned.

Short Story - A Lovely Woman - Grant Eagar
Prompt:
I Knew a Woman by Theodore Roethke
Partial:
I knew a woman, lovely in her bones,
When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them:
Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
The shapes a bright container can contain!
...
A Lovely Woman
Jack drove the last stake into the header beam, examined his progress then glanced at the setting sun. The work on the barn would have to wait until tomorrow; darkness was coming with all that it entailed. After he put his tools away he walked out to the horse trough and removed his shirt then washed the sweat and grim away. He dabbed at several cuts and blisters with goose grease then slid his jerkin back over his head and began lacing it up.“What a fine form, tiss a shame to cover it up,” came a female’s voice. He quickly turned around red-faced. “Pardon me miss, but I did not know anyone was about. You definitely were not there when I took the shirt off.”The girl gave him a pensive look. “I was just wondering by and thought I’d stop and take in the view.”He focused on the ground then his eyes were drawn to her face and those emerald eyes which were so green they almost glowed. The pearl white skin; the full, sneering lips which were the color of blood; and hair the color of midnight. His pulse increased and he started to sweat. Part of him ached to have her. He glanced at her bosom and let out a sigh then collected himself. He grabbed his lunch bucket and began to quickly walk towards his home in the far corner of the village. “Nice to meet you miss, I best be going.”She matched his step, her cream colored silk gown flowing in the breeze. “Don’t be such a shy nave, I just wanted to chat. It’s not like I’m some kind of demon or anything, just a simple maid wanting some company.”He glanced at her and shook his head. “Pardon me if I disagree, you are anything but a simple maid.”Her eyes twinkled mischievously. “I don’t know whether to take that as a compliment or as an insult. I think I’ll take it as a compliment. Thank you kindly, now there’s no need to walk like the devil herself was after you. If I didn’t know better I’d think you were being rude.”“Pardon me miss, but I have a girl of my own and don’t mean to cause her grief. Considering the manner in which the tongues in this village wag; the next time I visit her she’ll sic the mongrels on me.”The corners of her mouth turned up and she caught his arm and held him close as they walked. “We wouldn’t want the mongrels sic’d on you, would we." She then glanced at the homes with shutters and an occasional pair of eyes peering out. "I can understand the need for the neighbors to gossip, but walking a girl home is no sin. I’d say it was a virtue, a right noble thing to do. If I was an old hag you wouldn’t think it such a burden to walk with me.”He relaxed. “Now I am walking you home? A minute ago we were just chatting. I suppose we could walk for a ways together, now where exactly do you live?” “Tiss not far out of your way, just down this path.” She pointed down an overgrown path he was unfamiliar with.”He glanced at her again and asked, “And may I ask what your name is? I don’t remember you telling me.”They walked under a bridge and she said, “Just call me Sheila, Sheila the vampire.” She then barred her fanged and pulled his collar back revealing his thick veined neck.He screamed and attempted to pull away, but she held him fast. “Is this any way to act? Don’t be such a baby. I just want a bit of your blood, that’s all.” “Jack? Jack, is that you?” came a woman’s voice. This was accompanied by the menacing growls and barks of several hounds.“Bloody hell, what does a girl need to do get a nip of blood around this place?” Sheila then turned and ran with the dog at her heals.
This prompt provided me more back story for my vampire story in progress Sheila the vampire. I published a short story about Sheila in the anthology These Vampires still don't sparkle last fall.

Short Story - The Violin and the Alligator - Grant Eagar

Tree Sonata - Robert and Shana Parkeharrison
Prompt:
Picture of man playing a violin while standing on a tree stump.
Melba the swamp-thing swam to the surface of the swamp and brushed a lily pad out of the way. She peered out of the swamp water at a man playing a violin. The girl nudged a large alligator, named Bone Crusher and a smaller one named Crook Tail. “What do you boys think he’s up to? This music is terrible.”“Bone Crusher smacked his lips. “All I know is that someone has placed a fine meal on a pedestal. He looks rather fat and juicy to me. Did they put him there to torment us or is he calling us to dinner?” Melba scowled and moved the green hair out of her emerald eyes. “Can’t you think with something other than your stomach? He may be here for an important purpose.” The three had watched the row boat slowly approach the broken off tree and several men had placed a fifteen foot ladder against the trunk and assisted George, a young professor, as he struggled up the ladder and with much more help he was placed atop the tree. His class of eager freshman waited on the bank to witness the performance. This was to be the first public performance of Master George’s new piece, ‘Ode to the Swamp’. He had written the piece so that it encompassed all the sounds of a swamp, unfortunately for him some of the croaks and whistles did not work well when played by a violin. In fear for their grades the students attempted to listen with fascination. and avoid cringing. Several of them had their hands covering their ears. Melba scratched Bone Crusher’s broad back and said, “”Just be patient my pet; let us not be greedy. Maybe he is attempting to reach out to us somehow?”Crook tail, an old battle-scarred gator cleared his throat in disgust. “Pardon me if I disagree: I feel the music is delightful. You two just have no sense of taste; while I have an appreciation of the finer things.” Bone Crusher gave several hungry grunts, “I have taste, I can taste him already.”“Uncultured Moron!” said Crook tail.“Boys, boys give it a break,” said Melba. “You have to take into account others sense of taste. Now enough talking and let’s enjoy the show.”They swam closer to the stump and looked up at the performer who went on and on and on. The music professor caught up in the moment, wildly goaded the violin like it was a chicken he was trying to pluck. The students began checking their cell phones and glancing about. Finally, mercifully, the piece ended. George raised his hands high into the air with the violin in one hand and the bow in the other; he then bowed deeply - too deeply. He frantically caterwauled and plunged head first into the swamp. The students who were offering polite applause froze. They glanced at the water where he had disappeared and looked at one another in confusion then glanced over at the row boat. Several of them began hunting for the oars while others pushed the small craft towards the water.George, who was more concerned about saving his beloved violin than his own neck sank like a brick in the murky waters. His heavy tux and climbing boots keep him from rising and he continued to sink to the bottom. He struggled to rise then finally let go of the violin and shrugged out of his jacket and boots. He was a poor simmer on a good day and he was soon losing what air he did have. “Someone jump in and save my son! That boat is never going to reach him in time!” yelled his mother.“I’m sorry mam, but we saw several large Alligators in the swamp earlier today?” said the dean of the department. "I don't think I can risk the safety of the students, but if you want to save him be my guest."
"Well, he was a good boy it is sad to see him go like this," she said. "At least he got to play his piece."Back in the pond Melba was holding the Alligators back. “This would be a good time to feed,” said Bone Crusher. “I do so like fresh food. He is right there for the taking.”Melba glanced at the two. “Do you mind? I think I might try to save the wretched creature.” She ignored their looks of shock and swam down to where he was. By the time she reached him he had lost consciousness. She filled his lungs with her own air, then wrapped her tail about his waist and quickly kicked her powerfully legs and was soon across the swamp.“What are you doing?” asked Bone Crusher, who was swimming alongside her, “wasting perfectly good food is shameful. Just let me have a leg and I’ll call us even”“I think she is taken with the poor devil,” said Crook tail. "My dear, hogging the whole kill is bad form, bad form indeed."“I’m not taken with him, and you two can keep your teeth to yourself. Males are hard to come by here in the swamp, so I thought a human male might do. He isn’t much to look at and considering the terrible way he played; I doubt he'll be missed. No self respecting female would be drawn to that love song.” She swam for another hundred yards then down into her nest which resembled a beaver's lodge then up through a hole. Once she had him out of the water she began pumping the water out of him and occasionally filling his lungs with a breath of air. Finally after she had repeated this a dozen times, he coughed up water and regarded the green girl covered with vines in confusion. "Where the hell am I and what in god's name are you?"
"Is that any way to your rescuer?" She then gave him a sheepish smile, "I'm a swamp thing, this is my home and . . .we are a-a married."
- to be continued -.
I used this prompt to supply some back story for my novel Melba the Swamp Thing. I'm sorry if it has a bit of a cliff hanger ending, It was not meant to be a fully formed short story. I thought it worked nicely as an opening though. When I originally responded to the prompt I had him falling into the swamp and being immediately eaten by the alligators which would have been great comedy, but then the story would be over.

BLOG TOUR - BORN OF TREASURE - JORDAN ELIZABETH
I am pleased to be part of Jordan Elizabeth's blog tour for her new book TREASURE CHRONICLES. Over the years we have Beta read each other's work and collaborated on several anthologies. Not only is Jordan passionate about her own writing, but she is a big supporter of other writers as well. I can never thank her enough for all she has done to help me with my writing.
It’s science, darling…Death and diamonds often dance together.

“Clark used to be a miner, until he drank from a vial he swore was absinthe but was actually an invention to give him the ability to raise the dead. Now Clark seeks to fulfill his father's wishes to keep other inventions away from Senator Horan. His beloved Amethyst is along for the ride. Deceit, drama, romance, the insidious underbellies of gangs...How can she not be involved?
Clark can't hide behind the Treasure name forever and the army still wants him for his secret abilities. If Captain Greenwood can't snare Clark, then he'll use the Treasures as collateral. Saving his father's inventions will just have to wait, especially now that the Treasures have been kicked off their ranch and driven into exile. Clark knows how to survive on the run, but that’s not the fate the Treasures deserve. He can surrender to the army or fight for his freedom, but Amethyst has other plans for fixing their troubles.
She’s come across another one of the vials that gave Clark is abilities, and it looks mighty tasty.”

Short Story - Doppleganger - Grant Eagar

Picture link by Anna Lucylle
Prompt: GRAVELY RUNBy A.R.Ammons
Partial quote: “for it is not so much to know the self as to know it as it is known by galaxy and cedar cone,as if birth had never found itand death could never end it:”
The Doppelganger
The doppelganger glanced into a full length mirror and frowned. Whose memories were behind those indigo blue eyes? Some of Henry’s but mostly those of Sophie, the girl who was the mother after a fashion of her human body. She touched her check and smiled, there could be worse bodies to be fashioned after. Another of Henry’s inventions gone terribly wrong; or wonderfully, depending upon how she looked at it. Some days she wanted to embrace him and other days not so much. She ran her hand through her long auburn hair then wrinkled her nose. Was she more than the combined memories of Henry and Sophie; memories that were fading fast. She showed her teeth and picked out a piece of broccoli. The perfect white smile was glorious to behold, but was it hers or had she somehow stolen it?She pursued her lips and gently kissed the glass. An imprint of a kiss stayed on the mirror. Would she retain Sophie’s desire to kiss Henry or Henry’s desire to hold Sophie close? She then wrapped her arms about herself and spun around. She thought of Henry’s memories and smiled; since he had held her after the accident she had his memories as well. He had a hundred inventions bouncing about his head and now hers as well. She then considered the memories of Sophie and she touched her breast with a pang. Those memories she was glad to be rid of. Sophie's life was not her own, she owed it to the crown. When these glorious, terrible, wonderful, horrible memories were gone what would be left? When Sophie and Henry’s essence left her what would remain? Was she just a portion of their souls that had been torn away and was slowly being pulled back? When their essence left her would her life continue? When the last fragments of their souls departed would her last breath also depart?
I used this prompt as part of a background study into the doppelganger who appears as part of my upcoming story HENRY AND SOPHIE, a YA Steam-punk novel. I am currently seeking representation for this piece, if interested please contact me at: grantswritingstuff @gmail.com.

COVER REVEAL - INCONCEIVABLE! - TEGAN WREN
I'm excited to be part of Tegan Wren's cover reveal for her new book INCONCEIVABLE!
INCONCEIVABLE! blurb A popular, young royal couple can't produce an heir? INCONCEIVABLE!
When Ozarks native Hatty goes “whole hog” during karaoke, she catches the eye of Prince John. He isn’t what she expects the heir to a small European nation to be: he's affable, witty, and isn’t put off by her tell-it-like-it-is demeanor. Their flirtation should be short lived, but a force stronger than fate—Hatty’s newspaper editor—assigns her to cover the royals. After spending time together, she and John soon begin dating, and Hatty finds herself making headlines instead of writing them.
But challenges loom that are even more complicated than figuring out how to mesh Hatty's journalism career with life at Belvoir Palace. Hatty and John soon find themselves embroiled in an unusual sex scandal: they can't produce an heir. Tabloids dub Hatty a “Barren-ess,” and the royals become irate. Hatty politely tells them to shove it. But beneath her confident exterior, she struggles to cope with a heartbreak that invades her most intimate moments with John. Pressured to choose between invasive medical procedures and abandoning John’s claim to the throne, the couple feels trapped until a trip to Ethiopia shows them happy endings sometimes arrive long after saying “I do.”
Advance praise for INCONCEIVABLE! · "As someone who has experienced infertility, I empathize with Hatty's struggles. Wren beautifully illuminates the joy, grief, and adventure of creating a family against all odds in this heart warming and impactful story." America Olivo Campbell, actress: DeGrassi: The Next Generation, Chicago PD, Mission Impossible 5. Spokesperson for Baby Quest Foundation
· "I found the insights into infertility invaluable · "Not only was this a very well written and entertaining story (I flew through it), but I feel it's also a very important story." -Meredith Tate, author of Missing Pieces
· "Tegan Wren’s debut novel is by turn funny, heartbreaking and ultimately inspiring." JDC, author and journalist
· "I loved reading a romantic story about royals that didn't end at the wedding, showing us that there's more to love than falling in it. There's also staying in it, even when troubles come. For better and for worse." -Samantha Bryant, author of Going Through the Change
