Decor Inspiration: Touches of Blue & Tranquility

12816d

Having always been someone drawn to water, the color blue has always had a gravitational pull for me. Preferably lighter hues throughout the home to provide more light and become reminiscent of the ocean, when I happened upon interior decorator Susan Ferrier’s talents in this Gulf of Mexico home, it captured my attention. Profiled in Veranda magazine, the touches of blue and ample means for natural light to move about the home drew me from room to room. I hope you too enjoy the tour below.

Style Inspiration: Winter Work Chic

winterworkchic

Work and style. Add winter and it sometimes becomes complicated. While sometimes I do wear my outdoor winter boots to work and then switch into my heels when I arrive, a pair of booties is always a great idea, heel or not. Add a wool coat, slip on a bulky over-sized sweater paired with slim pants or a beautiful skirt that reveals your silhouette and winter style is quite achievable.

Why Not . . . Be Brave?

bebrave
“I believe that the most important single thing, beyond discipline and creativity is daring to dare.” ― Maya Angelou
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #83

It is a frequent occasion that I find myself looking around the life I have the opportunity to live and wondering how I have the fortunate circumstance to be standing in my shoes. On a far grander scale, I wonder if astronauts who have had the experience of orbiting Earth and returning to tell their tale or anyone who runs successfully for President or leader of a democratic nation ever looks around them in ah, asking how did this happen?

While each set of circumstance will no doubt be unique to the individual scenario, at the core bravery had to have been practiced. Without question, fear will be present when something we seek reveals itself to us. Often we will have to let go of our comfortable ways, change something within our minds or being with regards to how we go about our everyday lives, but if we realize that what we fear is often an indication of the direction we desire to go, if we are willing to tap into our bravery, the most amazing changes and life can begin to become our reality.

The entire month of January here on Monday’s posts/episodes has focused on “The How of Happiness” (see here, here and here), but the underlying foundation is the willingness to tap into the bravery, the courage so to speak, that resides within us all. And so, as this is the last Monday in January, I felt it only fitting that Bravery be our focus.

The benefits of being brave are immense and profoundly life-changing. In this post, I share in detail how to be brave, but today I’d like to share with you the carrots that are worth coveting if we have the courage to practice bravery in our everyday lives.

1. Become the director of your life

The only way to ensure that your life is your own, to not be led around by the nose, whether it be society, family or friends, is to have the courage to step forward toward what you are curious about. Choose to seek a career path that speaks to your strengths, rather than just your skills, decide to follow where your wandering mind leads you, be willing to do things on your own and often you will discover what makes your soul truly come to life.

2. Accept room for growth and choose to improve

Being brave is also about owning our mistakes, understanding that we are a work in progress and finding the strength to seek out guidance, support and information when we don’t have the answers to make the change or improvements we seek.

3. Grab hold of opportunities when presented

To reiterate what I find to be the true definition of luck, preparedness meeting opportunity, it is in these moments of opportunity that we choose to step forward and cease what could be rather than fear what could be lost. Life wants to reveal its awesomeness to us, but often we are too concerned about what we know and refuse to discover what we don’t know that keeps us from living the small life we aren’t truly happy with.

4. Embrace spontaneity from time to time

Yes, being brave by definition requires us to feel uncomfortable as we step outside of our comfort box. Being disciplined and making tough disciplines as we prioritize our lives is not always fun everyday moment of our journey. With that said, being brave is also about trusting ourselves. Knowing that we can be spontaneous from time to time, let our hair down and simply see where the moment takes us because we know we have established a strong foundation to return to when the spontaneous moment passes.

5. Accept that life’s events aren’t always in their hands

Similarly, when we know that we have a secure foundation, regarding our finances, our relationships (which includes the relationship we have with ourselves), it becomes easier to recognize what is and what isn’t within our control. And when we are cognizant of the difference, we can detach from results that we have no control over. When we detach, we can then relax, not wasting energy stewing, fretting or whining about what we wanted to have happen, but didn’t.

6. Allow authentic relationships to grow

“The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.” ― Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Stanton’s statement continues to resonate with me, and having lived a handful of years fretting about what others think: about my lifestyle, my job performance, my looks, etc., the liberation that is now felt is probably not a strong enough word. The beauty of letting go, being brave enough to show who we really are is that we come to life. We begin to glow and radiate and that, that is attractive.

7. Introduce others to your talents

A scary task to embrace is to show others the heart of soul of who we are and what we can do. Those things we hold dear to us, that we are passionate about is to make ourselves vulnerable, and that is absurdly trepidatious. However, and we can do this slowly and gradually, when we do begin to show others our talents and passions, the people who we might work with, who might have similar passions and curiosities begin to gravitate towards us, and relationships, networking and opportunities begin to materialize.

8. Reduces unnecessary energy drains

Being brave can me saying no, letting go and walking away. Whether it is a relationship, a job, a way of life, this is not an easy decision, but after much contemplation, you know without question your life is not able to be what you wish it to be with certain current components in it, you must find the courage within yourself to let go. Energy is power and when our energy is used defending ourselves, getting trapped in others’ pointless drama, we take away energy for living the life that brings us to our best selves and helps us reach our full potential.

9. Discover something new about yourself

Listening to your curiosity without question requires us to be brave. Never tried skiing? Why not rent a pair of skis and take a jaunt up to the mountain? Always wanted to paint but didn’t know where to start? Sign up for a class and see what is revealed. Listen to your inklings, those ideas that tickle your conscience. See where they lead. That is being brave, and it may just lead you to your best life.

10. Realizing there are good people in this world

Maybe you’ve been lied to, cheated on, abused or taken advantage of. After such unspeakable and deplorable treatment, the walls can build so much so that we can’t see over them to realize amazingly trustworthy people do exist. We must be brave enough to continue to reach out, say hello and get to know others. It doesn’t mean that we ignore red flags, but it does mean we may have to recalibrate our intuition.

11. Experience the beautiful amazement of the world

My experience with being brave as it relates to this point is travel. Beginning when I was 21 I traveled internationally abroad alone for the first time. It was not easy. I will not lie. I was in tears at times, but more often than not I was amazed by the world I was seeing. An entirely different world that I did not know existed. That world was France. And perhaps because it was my first experience, it made a lasting imprint. One that has called me back again and again. And each time I return, I continue to fall more in love with the culture that has in many ways inspired this blog and the simply luxurious way of living. Be brave enough to see a world that you don’t live each and every day. What it will reveal to you may surprise you.

~Why Not . . . Travel Alone? (two part series)

12. Unearth your fullest potential

In yesterday’s Au Courant Weekly, the Thought to Ponder focused on why we should be brave. The idea being that if we aren’t brave, we lose what the world would like to reveal to us. We lose the amazing life that wants to be our life.

13. Turn your dreams into reality

“It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone else.” ― Erma Bombeck

Those dreams you have as you are daydreaming at work or while driving on the road aren’t random. They keep popping up again and again in hopes that you will do something with them, make something of it, bring them to fruition. After all, you will do something with that idea that no one else will because no one else is you. Your dreams can indeed become reality. To circle back to the top of today’s post/episode, each day I shiver at the thought of what if I didn’t take the risk and continue to try to move to Bend. I would be missing the opportunity to live in real-time the life of my dreams. Be brave.

—The Simple Sophisticate, episode #82

International

—The World Economic Forum in Davio, Switzerland, released this past Wednesday the top countries to live in. Looking at 60 countries around the world and using 24 different categories compiled into nine broader categories, more than 16,000 people were surveyed. The nine categories consisted of adventure, citizenship, cultural influence, entrepreneurship, heritage, movers, open for business, power and quality of life. The top five in reverse order: (5) Sweden (4) United States (3) United Kingdom (2) Canada and (1) Germany.

—The mosquito-born virus, Zika, is raising concern and prompting four Latin American countries to ask women to delay pregnancy for up to two years. As an outbreak has taken place in Brazil with 4,000 cases discovered since October, as babies born with microcephaly or abnormally small heads has been on the rise. Confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the first baby detected with effects upon the brain due to the Zika virus was born in Oahu, Hawaii, last Friday. As his mother had spent time in Brazil during her pregnancy, the United States has offficially issued a warning to pregnant women advising them not to travel to 20 different countries in the Americas where the Zika virus has registered cases.

—The BBC and BuzzFeed reported that illegal betting in ATP tennis matches has been going on for nearly a decade. Citing 16 players who have been in the top 50 rankings of the world and alleging that eight are currently playing at the Australian Open in Melbourne, the accusations have caused a bevy of consternation. Click here for the latest results at the Australian Open.

—On Wednesday, armed militants entered a Pakistan university, killing at least 20 students. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the tragic event at Bacha Khan University in the city of Charsadda. Within hours, the army had located the four shooters who are now dead.

—Earlier this week, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the government, in an effort to “build community integration and counter extremism”, will be creating a £20m educational fund to teach Muslim women English. Estimating that there are more than 19,000 Muslim women in England who speak little or no English, the fund is “aimed at reaching the most isolated women and will be targeted to specific communities based on the ongoing review into segregation.”

—Globally, oil-prices hit a 13-year low on Wednesday and with the addition of Iran’s supply due to the lifting of the sanctions, U.S. stocks were trepidatious to say the least as they dropped three percent on Thursday before rebounding slightly on Friday.

National: United States

—The mid-Atlantic east coast was and continues to be walloped by an impressive blizzard. Washington D.C., Baltimore and now New York are being doused with up to two feet of snow. While thankfully advanced warnings keep many people off the roads, near London, Kentucky, thousands were stranded on a freeway for multiple hours due to the inclement weather.

—In the fashion world, the stylistic talent Grace Coddington made the announcement that she was stepping down from her role as Vogue‘s (Anna Wintour’s Vogue) creative director and chief stylist. Not leaving Vogue entirely, she will be taking on a “at-large” position and begin projects with Comme des Garçons on perfume. Having worked at Vogue for 28 years, Anna Wintour is reportedly supportive of her move. Coddington will work on at least four editorial projects a year, continue attending shows and remain on the masthead.

Health & Science

—As reported in The New York Times, 2015 was indeed the hottest year on record. According to scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, as reported on Wednesday, 2015 broke the record set only last year in 2014.

Arts & Entertainment

—The Academy of Motion Pictures, under increased scrutiny regarding the lack of diversity represented in last week’s Oscar nominee announcement, made news late this past week that they would consider changing their rules to include more people of color in their membership to improve diversity. Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith were a few of the actors announcing they were going to boycott the Oscar Awards ceremony this year due to the lack of diverse representation.

—One of the founders of the American band The Eagles, Glenn Frey passed away on Monday at the age of 67 due to complications and a lengthy battle with “rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia”. Link to song “You Belong to the City” (as heard on the show)

—Premiering tonight on Fox, The X Files returns. With the season finale taking place in 2002 and the feature film in 2008, many fans are curious, yet highly anticipating its return. In the 6-episode “event”, Scully and Mulder will put their partnership back on the small screen to see if it was worth the wait.

Bendite Event of the Week

With many art galleries around Bend, an exhibit I have been wanting to check out is currently at the Jenny Green Gallery and runs through the end of January. The exhibit is titled Cons & Icons and each image is constructed entirely of fingerprints. The black and white images depict well-known singers, actors and historical figures as seen in their mugshots, such as David Bowie, Martin Luther King Jr. and Jim Morrison. The artist Jennifer Hannaford blends her artistic talent with her professional experience as a forensic fingerprint examiner and the real life forensic scientist to create unique portraits.

French Word of the Week

Le dimanche

Bonjour, this is Géraldine from Comme une Française.com. I’m here to share the latest French Word of the Week: a simple very French word for your Simply Luxurious Life in France.

Sunday in France, is sacred. Le dimanche  you can do many things, but not work. It’s a day dedicated to you and your loved ones. Les magasins sont fermés, shops are closed.

If your family is around you’ll probably see them for a 4 hour “déjeuner de famille”, a family lunch, with the products you bought from “le marché”.

Maybe you’d like to go out to “visiter un musée ou une expo (une exposition)” (a museum or an exhibition). If the weather is nice, stay outside pour “prendre l’air” and “se balader au parc”, or “dans la forêt” or even better “à la campagne”. Get some fresh air and go out for a walk in the park, the forest or the countryside.

Or maybe you’d prefer to stay home instead pour “faire le ménage”, “jardiner” ou “bricoler”. Cleaning, gardening or do some home improvements.

At last, it’s your day so maybe you’d like to sleep in : “faire la grasse matinée”, relax “se reposer” and do nothing : “glander” in slang.

It’s Sunday after all!

If you want to add more French in your Simply Luxurious Life, join me on Comme une Française.com for weekly video tips to sound French, even to the French! And it’s free.

This & That: No. 193

193
Beauty
Deep Sleep Pillow Spray

In episode #22 of the podcast I recommended my favorite linen spray which I use each week on my sheets once they are freshly put on my bed. I also put it on my pillow, but recently Deep Sleep Pillow Spray has been brought to my attention. Recommended in Porter magazine, the simple all-natural spritzer is infused with essential oils of lavender, vetivert and wild camomile to help bring you to a sweet slumber ever quicker. For fewer than $30 it might be something to check out.

Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Shower Oil

Winter can be a dry and moisture zapping time for our skin. As I discussed in this post/episode in 2014, part of the reason skin breaks out in the winter more frequently, or if we live in a perpetual dry climate, is not because we aren’t cleansing, but because we aren’t moisturizing our skin enough, thereby causing our skin to produce its own oils to compensate. However, while I use facial oil every night and have noticed a tremendous improvement, I have realized my entire body needs the same attention in the drier months. As recommended by Harper’s Bazaar, shower oils are worth investing in, and as they recommended a handful of oils, the Jo Malone Peony Blush Suede shower oil caught my attention. (Additional shopping options here.)

Cooking
Sunday Suppers: Recipes & Gatherings by Karen Mordechai

When I first began blogging back in 2009, one of the first food blogs I ever came across that continued to keep my attention was Sunday Suppers. With superb photography, Karen Mordechai’s meals captured not only the beauty of the ingredients but the inviting nature of the environment in which they were being served. While I may be late to the party, as her cookbook was released in late 2014, I am happy to have finally been made aware (thank you @pearlslaceandgrace) of a cookbook I cannot wait to put to use in my kitchen.

Shopping
Honey Browser Extension

If you shop online often or even from time to time, you will want to install the Honey Browser extension. Why? Instead of having to surf, scour and browse the internet for a promo code, Honey applies it immediately as you are checking out. No joke. At top shopping sites such as Amazon and Macys and hundreds more, merely click on the orange “honey” icon you will see on the check-out page (or in your bookmarks toolbar at the top of the page – a red number will pop up), and the savings is yours.

Joseph ‘Mili’ felted wool-blend coat

Major reductions are taking place at Net-a-Porter currently, and on top of the reductions already listed as Sale-Must-Have, you can save an additional 20% with promo code SALE20 (which Honey (above) will alert you to if you have it installed). Joseph’s wool-blend coat is a classic belted trench still available in a wide array of sizes and certain to be worn and loved for seasons to come.

Television
—Younger (season 2)

I am two weeks behind on this announcement, but you can catch up on the first two epidodes on TV Land’s website. I must admit, I enjoyed Younger last season with Sutton Foster starring as the 40-year-old divorcée, yet posing as a 26-year-old in the publishing industry along with Hilary Duff and Debi Mazer. A simple, light-hearted comedy set in New York City (produced by Darren Starr) and involving the ever-changing world of social media. Definitely an ideal middle-of-the-week respite at 10pm on Wednesdays. Have a look at this season’s trailer below:

After a late afternoon cross-country excursion with the boys to wrap up Thursday, I am looking ahead to a weekend of local theater, brunch with a delightful and amazing former student and leaving the rest open to what will be. The simple events, the everyday occasions, the short jaunts around a beloved town, this is what makes the ordinary extraordinary. Wouldn’t you agree?

I do hope you have had a wonderful week. One in which you can look back and see productivity which can help you let go and relax as the weekend unfolds. Thank you very much for stopping by the blog this week. Until Sunday, bon week-end!

How to Create a Blog You Love, Part Trois

parttroisblogcreate

As someone who has been blogging for just over six years, I will attest that there is always something new to learn as the medium is forever evolving, growing, morphing and offering new and unique ways to share content as well as connect with readers and other businesses.

With that said, the first step is to connect. Allow monetizing, should you wish for your blog to be a business, be the second and natural step. While I do not have a MBA, I do know that there must be a market for what you wish to monetize. To assume readers will want what you have to sell, even if you do have an amazing product or service, is to put the cart before the horse.

Keeping that in mind, in today’s final part of the three part series (part one and part two), we’ll first discuss how to network both with fellow bloggers and on social media. And then we’ll dive into monetizing.

1.Reach out

The best way to connect is to read, follow and comment on blogs that are similar to your niche as well as are interesting to you. The first year, I found myself visiting and commenting on blogs almost as much as I was blogging itself. As you know, there are endless blogs in whatever your interests may be. Seek out these blogs and comment. Be authentic and don’t ask for them to visit your site. If it happens, let it happen naturally. Another great way to connect is to share great content when you come across it. Whether you share on Twitter or have a weekly Friday Links posts where you share posts that caught your eye over the week beyond your blog, spread the love and share the amazing work that people are putting out into the blogosphere. I will forever be grateful to to Franki Durbin of her eponymously named blog (at the time it was called Life in a Venti Cup) who took the time to shine a spotlight on my blog in an entire post unbeknownst to me only three months into blogging. All of a sudden, I had a spike in my page views and I couldn’t figure out why. Well, you guessed it. It was all coming from Franki’s kind and sincere mention.

The power of shout-outs, thank-yous, spotlights and sincere love for what someone else does builds the type of bonds which lead you connections you may not be able to predict. New York City stylist and blogger, Tiffani of Style by Tiffani and I met via our blogs and to this day we continue to remain close friends. I could go on and on, but the key is that all of these relationships while it may have occurred in a business/blogging bubble, they were also sincere.

2. Connect your social networks

A simple tweet, Facebook post, Tumblr post, Instagram image or Pinterest visual each time you post is the simplest way to spread the word and introduce your blog and content to new readers. There are helpful ways to sync your posts to tweet and post automatically when a new post goes live which will save you time and eliminate forgetting on those days when your schedule is busier than expected. Check out TwitterFeed which can link your RSS feed (posts) with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Also, WordPress has a handful of plug-ins that will do this for you automatically as well. Simply upload them and you are set. Try this plug-in, NextScripts, to include Pinterest.

3. Add the Pinterest button

Allow readers to easily share what they love about your blog. I have linked to the WordPress plug-in, but your web/blog designer can create unique pinterest buttons that pop up when readers hover over each image.

4. Respond to comments

One of the hardest, without question, valuable tasks bloggers need to engage in is responding to comments on the blog, Facebook, Tweets, etc. Often this can become hard if you have a second full-time job, but the discussion allows you to connect with your readers and establish a relationship. Even if you aren’t able to comment on the same day, whenever you are able to respond will be a positive comment.

Monetizing

5. Ad Affiliates

Whether you are a blog that specializing in book reviews or a fashion site that exhibits street style like Atlantic-Pacific, ad affiliate companies work with advertisers who work with you (publishers) to market their goods to consumers. Affiliate links are associated with certain items and if the reader purchases the item (after clicking through), the blogger receives a small commission for the sale. The companies that offer this commission based relationships are plenty: Amazon, RewardStyle, LinkShare, Commission Junction, ShareaSale, and individual business will have their own affiliate business. Just ask or search the site.

Most importantly, whatever you recommend or include in your posts, do so because you sincerely love and would recommend the product. Trust is crucial when it comes to blogging. In my FAQ page, I share with readers that some of the clothing spotlighted is associated with affiliate links. Maintaining and communicating this is helpful to readers; however, most are well aware of the ubiquitousness of affiliate links.

6. Sponsored Posts

Similar to Ad Affiliates, if you have chosen to work with a company, and they have offered you a product, only do so because you would recommend it for free. Just as importantly, be upfront with your readers. Somewhere on your blog post let them know that the post was sponsored. Most often the companies do not require you to state any one thing in particular as you would have declined them if you weren’t interested their product, so make it known as well that the thoughts shared are entirely your own. I have taken on a few sponsored posts in the past, but I have turned down far more. Again, the key is transparency and authenticity as you are gradually building trust in your readership.

7. Create a product or service

Once you have established yourself as an expert (or a trusted emerging expert) in the field your blog is focused on, listen to what your readers want. More often than not, they will tell you what you should be doing. It took two to three years of readers insisting I create a hold-in-your-hands book that brought together the basic premise of living simply luxuriously, but without their prodding I wouldn’t have been assured that the market wanted what I had to offer. Now with more than 10,000 books sold, I’m glad I listened, and a second book is in the works.

The offerings are endless based on your skills and talent. My primary income from the blog is based on ads and the sales of the book, but just at the top of 2016, I made available another item that readers had been requesting, TSLL Planner Templates. However, what you offer doesn’t have to be a physical product. It can also be a service, such as the Online Styling services I have offered for the past three years. Having a blog opens the doors to connections beyond your physical location, and that is overwhelmingly powerful as you can reach those who are looking for what you specifically have to offer and they now (because you have a blog), can find you.

8. Work with Influencer Marketing

Another tremendous source of income that doesn’t require any work other than the initial setting up of your html code in your blog is working with an influencer marketing business. Basically, they are the middle man. Google AdSense, Style Coalition, Mode (formerly known as Glam Media) and AdThrive are all businesses I have worked with or am currently work with and highly recommend. Most require you to have a been blogging for a certain period of time and have the ability to display so many pageviews a month, but once you meet the criteria, the hard work is off the table. They place the ads, find the advertisers and you simply get to write what you love writing.

A book I highly recommend if you are interested in fashion or lifestyle blogging is Yuli Ziv’s Blogging Your Way to the Front Row. She is the founder of Style Coalition, and having had the opportunity to meet her in New York City at Fashion Week a few years ago, I can attest, she knows of what she speaks.

As you can see, there are a lot of moving parts to monetizing, and in all honesty, I am always looking, reading and discovering something new. However, as of January 2016, this is what has worked for me. Now the podcast is an entirely different animal. Perhaps I’ll address that in future blog posts. :) I do hope this series has helped answer a few questions about getting your blog up and running the way you want it to. Below are the first and second part of the three part series. Happy Blogging!
