All the Liquors (2023)

All the Liquors was a little bit sexier than the other series from South Korea. The big fault is that the starting plot, the fact that chef Park Ki Hoon does not want to sell liquors in his restaurant, is basically soon forgotten as it wasn't something important: being the reason why Park Ki Hoon and Han Ji Yu met, I would have dealt with it in a better way. Said that, I liked this series, it was sweet and sexy at the same time, the main characters are eye candy material, and there is basically no drama, it's more a comedy. HEA. You can see it on GagaOOLala and Viki. Heat Level: 4/6.

Absolute Zero (2023)

Absolute Zero gave me travel sickness (pun intended). The jumping of Suansoon and Ongsa in time was a little bit confusing, at one point I was thinking, OK now who knows what? And if you consider the butterfly effect, everything should have been changed in their life... Anyway, interesting concept, not really big on the idea that an older Suansoon had a relationship with a younger Ongsa, a relationship no one seemed to find strange, but OK, this is a time travel series, not real life. Said that, I think that I like a lot Ongsa, in both versions, younger and older, not really sold on Suansoon, in both versions. It's so much complicated that I would not spoil you saying it's HEA, because just trying to understand how you will arrive to it is most of the series' value. You can see it on iQIYI. Heat Level: 2/6.

Night Flight (2014)

Night Flight is not your sweet high school romance, on the contrary it's violent, dark and for most of the time I was terrified about the ending. So big spoiler at the beginning, it has an HEA, even if I still do not understand how these two boys can find happiness in the world they are living. More, Gi Woong is most of the time so cruel with Yong Ju that it was difficult to reconcile him being interested in Yong Ju with his bullying persona. But little by little, I started to feel pain for Gi Woong, and I wanted for him to be able, for once, to have something beautiful in his life, Yong Ju. Heat Level: 2/6.

Love Sick (2014)

Love Sick have two seasons and 1 spin-off, ReminderS. If not for the spin-off, I wouldn't probably have recommended this series. For most of the time Noh and Phun are separated, from their own stupidity I would say. ReminderS is the only part where you can see them as a couple, but again with a little bit of drama (even if it's soon resolved). The actor doing Noh is also completely different in this last part, so much that at time I had difficulty to reconcile the two of them (it's the same actor, but with 5 years more under the belt). Anyway, high school/college romance, fake dating, real dating with jealousy, ex-girlfriend causing trouble... did I list most of the common thropes of a BL series? HEA. You can see it on Netflix (s1 and s2) and iQIYI (ReminderS). Heat Level: 2/6.

My New Boss Is Goofy (2023)

My New Boss is Goofy is a charming anime about Japanese office workers. It's not really a love story per se, even if it's clear to everyone that Momose has fallen in love for Shirosaki, but it's for sure appealing to all romance lovers out there. One of the coworkers is bisexual, but this is not stressed out like something out of ordinary, it just came out while browsing his Instagram feed, and saying, this is my old-girlfriend, this is my old-boyfriend. At first Momose is surprise, but then everything remains on the same level. There is even an entire episode dedicated to the time Shirosaki adopted an abandoned kitten, and it's all from the perspective of the kitten. So sweet. Highly reccomended. You can see it on Crunchyroll.

I Love You as a Man (2014)

OK, this was really hard to see. The relationship between An Zi Yan and Mai Ding is quite toxic, at times An Zi Yan treats Mai Ding as an object, and I think that, deep down, he feels that Mai Ding, who is gay, is sort of inferior to him. So why I'm recommending it? because this is, I think, the only Chinese production with a gay theme that is not hidden behind other layers. Actually the sex scene between An Zi Yan and Mai Ding is almost pornographic. So yes, if you want to see something completely different coming out from China, give it a try. Be aware of the order, these are 4 movies: 1) Like Love 2) I love You As A Man: Part 1 3) I love You As A Man: Part 2 4) He is Next to You. HEA. Heat Level: 6/6.

Together with Me (2017)

I have often heard people complain about the Together with Me series and I can understand why: season 1 have basically a rape scene, and in season 2 (the Next Chapter) there is a cheating... Therefore I wondered if recommending it. I chose to do it, cause, in the end, this is one of the few series where the main leads are very physical with each other, and this is in line with their role: the relationship between Korn and Knock starts from an heated and drunk sexual encounter, and from that event, shacking both men, they have to find a new equilibrium. Korn is gay, Knock is not, and Korn basically rapes Knock... they are both drunk, but yes, it's difficult to justify Korn, even if, in the end, they fall in love. The rape is not violent, just shocking for the viewer because you would not expect it from Korn. HEA. You can see it on Netflix. Heat Level: 4/6.

SOTUS (2016)

While watching other BL series, I noticed they often mention SOTUS, so I suppose it was quite earth breaking when it came out. SOTUS is basically revolving the cards on the Senior and junior thrope, and here it's the junior who is the seme. More, the junior is also the one that he was supposedly asked to respect the SOTUS system, and Arthit, the senior, is in charge of it. Lets say that the starting point of the series, with Kong declaring that he will gain the gear of Arthit making him his wife, was quite perfect. But I think the rest of the series was dragged a little too much, all in all I think it would have been perfect if shorter. And season 2, SOTUS S, didn't really added anything interesting to the story, just dragged even more it. HEA. You can see it on Youtube. Heat Level: 3/6. Please notice that the actor playing Kong is way more handsome than what he appears in the poster.

Silhouette of Your Voice (2017)

Silhouette of Your Voice is a sweet and lyrical love story. Indeed, it's probably more pure than an ordinary love story, cause here we don't see any sexual interest involved (or at least they don't let us be part of that) and Sugihara Kohei's interest in Sagawa Taiichi is strong but not physical. Apparently Taiichi's voice is the only one that Kohei can hear distinctively, where else all other are only murmurs. It's clear to everyone that they are building a bond that is stronger than friendship, but not to Taiichi. When faced with it, Taiichi's first reaction is rejection. But the rejection is not hurting only Kohei, it's hurting also Taiichi, and in the end, he resolves to approach again Kohei, candidly admitting he hasn't the same feeling of Kohei, but nevertheless he wants to continue with their friendship... what will happen next, it's up to you to imagine. HEA. Heat Level: 1/6.

Red Balloon (2017)

I wasn't sure if recommending Red Balloon, because it's very sad for most of the series, but I decided to do it since, at least, it was an HEA and indeed it's very emotional and well done. Xia Zhi Chen and Li Xiang Wan have the ordinary starstruck love story, Chen, a troubled guy with a dysfunctional family, and Wan, the gay boy becoming his roommate, and after a bit, something more. The social and family pressure is too much, and probably even with the wrong idea to protect Wan, Chen surrenders to the pressure and goes to the "right" path (but totally wrong for him) to marry and have children. Fast forward some years, it's not that Chen and Wan have a perfect life, but it's not bad. Only that their love is still there, stronger than ever. I liked how Chen managed the situation, behaving in a rational way, setting things straight (no pun intended) in his life, before going back to Wan. And yes, maybe someone would have wanted for Wan to be more hard to get, but guys, they were, and are, in love, and if your first love come back to you, I don't think I would be able to send him away. HEA. You can see it on GagaOOLala. Heat Level: 3/6.
