"I love Ann McMan."—Dorothy Allison, National Book Award finalist for Bastard Out of Carolina
When sculptor and author Barb Davis is given an NEA grant to pair original feminist sculptures with searing first-person essays on transitions in women's lives, she organizes a two week writing retreat with twelve of the best, brightest, and most notorious lesbian authors in the business. But in between regularly scheduled happy hours and writing sessions, the women enter a tournament bass fishing competition, receive life coaching from a wise-cracking fish named Phoebe, and uncover a subterranean world of secrets and desires that is as varied and elusive as the fish that swim in the waters of Lake Champlain.
Set on the beautiful shores of Vermont's Lake Champlain, Backcast is richly populated with an expansive cast of endearing and outrageous characters who battle writer's block, quirky locals, personal demons, unexpected attractions, and even each other during their two-week residency. For Barb and each of her twelve writers, the stakes in this fast-moving story are high, but its emotional and romantic payoffs are slow and sweet.
Filled with equal parts laugh-out-loud humor and breathtaking pathos, Backcast serves up a sometimes irreverent, sometimes sobering look at the hidden lives of women, and how they laugh, love, lose, and blunder through their own search for meaning.

1) What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Ambitions? Well since you’re putting it out there I’ll say it: NY Times Bestseller with enough writing income to live comfortably. So thank you all for overbuying my books from now until eternity <3.
2) How many published books do you have? Can you tell us something about them?
Lucky will be my 7th and I have a short –Nuts To You which will be the 8th coming out through Dreamspinner in June. 6 Days to Valentine the prequel for Lucky was actually the first novella I’d written for publication – though it went through several iterations before it was acceptable, so it ended up being my third published after Prodigal Wolf, co-written with Sara York about a clan of wolf shifters living in South Carolina, and Snow Globe which a Christmas short set in Minnesota. Can This Be Real is a long novella set in Portland about a cop and a chef, My Marine co-written with Sara York, and Last First Kiss are both shorts.
3) Your main character wants to cook something special for his love interest. What does he make?
Nick doesn’t cook. But he’s a mixologist so he’d invent a drink for FatBoy. Maybe a whiskey float: pecan ice cream in a couple of shots of smoky scotch from Nick’s favorite Scottish distillery.
4) What are you working on at the moment? What’s it about?
The Art of Pie, which is due in June—is set in the same Oregon beach town I spent a great deal of time in growing up. My grandparents had a house seven miles up the Rogue River and I use the house, the river, and the town as the setting for my story about two summer friends meeting again after nearly twenty years.
5) Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
I aim for writing every day and I like to partner up with another writing buddy doing sprints. It helps keep me glued to my keyboard and mostly writing rather than facebooking!
