In loving memory of Joe Dever
I have just been informed that my friend and respected author of the Lone Wolf gamebooks, Joe Dever, has passed away.
This is a deeply sad moment. I have enjoyed his work since childhood and I have been deeply honoured that my work in my adult life brought such a talented individual into my circle.
You meant a lot to me, and your enthusiasm and imagination will be deeply missed.
I have had the honour to cover much of Joe Dever's work on my gamebook blog, and I'd like to include several of those linked here in memory.
Lone Wolf book 1 - Flight from the Dark
Lone Wolf book 2 - Fire on the Water
Lone Wolf book 3 - The Caverns of Kalte
Lone Wolf book 4 - The Chasm of Doom
Lone Wolf book 5 - Shadows on the Sands

Democracy is dead
I'm going to make a statement here, and I will explain exactly what I mean by it. The statement is simply this. Democracy is dead.
What do I mean? Well, first, I need to explain that I'm defining democracy in terms of its means of electing representatives to a form of governance in a one-man, one-vote system, thereby establishing leadership by the will of the people. This is commonly taken to mean that the party who earn the most votes are set into governance, but I'm boiling it down to its more basic core concepts here.By my statement 'democracy is dead', I am stating that I do not believe that this system works as intended. I do not believe that leadership is established by the will of the people, nor by any other means similar to accurate representation of the populace. I am not even sure that democracy has even existed in that form in many years.
The key point I feel is important is 'by the will of the people'. What will do the people have?
As we speak, the Crown prosecutors are considering a complaint against Brexit EU referendum campaigns. These campaigners, I think we can all agree, deliberately lied to the population in order to gain their votes. As did the Trump campaign, as did the Cameron campaign, and so on. That's to be expected from politicians, isn't it? After all, we all know that politicians lie, right?
But what about the people who accept the lie?
You see, here's where I start to see a problem with the whole 'will of the people' thing. People, in general, have fairly little will of their own when it comes to advertising. Let's be fair, advertising works. It works for you, it works for me, we all want things that we don't necessarily need. Companies can manufacture desire in us, make us want things. The thing is, politicians do that too. But they do more than that. They appeal to even more base, more primitive emotions, like fear. Tell people that an enemy is coming, and they get frightened. Here in the UK, less than 20% of the land mass is populated - yet when Brexit campaigners told people that the country was full, people were afraid.
My argument is, the population has been conditioned to accept these lies. Funding for education is shockingly low. Young children aren't taught how to analyse information, how to think critically, how to examine what they are told. Newspapers and journalism pump out political spiel rather than news. And people accept the narratives presented to them, because they don't even see it as a narrative. They accept it without even knowing it because it's advertised to them and, without realising it, they vote a certain way.
You may think I'm exaggerating the point on education. If that's the case, consider this. 15,000 people in America voted for Harambe. Let that sink in a moment. Really consider that. Okay, confession time, that's actually a lie. Snopes confirmed that this story isn't true. But you believed it, didn't you? And you've seen it on social media, maybe your friends have posted it, but did they check it? I'm willing to bet the answer is 'no'. In fact, this entire paragraph is an example of what I was talking about - that people accept information presented to them. And, because you're no doubt as upset about the election as I am, you accepted that and took it onboard without a second thought.
Based on that, can you see why I think that the will of the people can be guided, twisted, and moulded perfectly?
Earlier on today, I mentioned that I do not agree with democracy. Immediately, I was accused of wanting a despotic or tyrannical system instead, one where people had no power. I found it almost mind-numbing that we not only think about political systems in such a basic, two-dimensional, black-and-white way (I'd opt for a secular republic-based geniocracy personally, but nobody stopped to actually ask my opinion).
Hell, I'd approve scrapping the first-past-the-post system too. Do you know how your vote is actually counted? You may have heard about campaigns to scrap this system and swap to a better one. If you don't know, you really should. Think about how this system will favour the current tory government the next time the UK has a general election. Scary, isn't it? Now ask yourself why the tory government isn't keen on changing the way it works.
But, more than that, I found myself asking, what makes people think that we don't already live in a despotic or tyrannical system already? We have a vote, yes, but what good is that vote when the will of the people can be swept up with lies from those who hold the minds of the people already in their sway? Is it really your will if I make you believe a lie?
I don't think it is.
I think that democracy has become a toy of people who do not care about the will of the people. It is a tool used to gain power, without any regard to representing the will of the people. While the people who desire power have at their disposal the means and the ability to shape the desires of the population, we cannot have democracy.
You may now ignore everything I've actually written and spew vitriol at me for being a nazi or whatever.

Day of the Dead

Hello all! Hope you had a lovely halloween. Want to hear how mind went? Well...
On Sunday, the authors, poets and songsmiths of Portsmouth got together to celebrate Halloween on the Day of the Dead festival. A celebration of darkly funny and hilariously grotesque, I had the honour of performing my piece "The Blank Page" (available in full in my anthology collection).
So, who were the illustrious performers? We had a massive list! And I want to give shout-outs and massive thanks to everyone who performed, so that you can check out their work. Here goes. We had Tony Noon, Maggie Sawkins, Charlotte Comley, Alan Morris, Jacqui Pack, James Bicheno, Lord Byro, Philip Jeays, Christine Lawrence, Tom Harris, Gareth Rees, VH Leslie, Tom Sykes, Sue Spiers, Jamie West, Diana Bretherick, and Matt Wingett

We hit the newspapers with a bang - here's our spread! Dead fancy!
Even more impressively, Sunday saw the release of the (first of many?) official Day of the Dead book! Edited by Matt, it contains stories by many of the performers from the event, including my own short story "Footprints on the Lakeside". You can, of course, grab a copy of the book to add to your collection, and I highly recommend that you do!
This was a wonderful event and left everyone eager to see what next year's halloween will bring!
And just a reminder to everyone out there reading this that my new short novella, "The Castle of Count Shagula" (LGBT erotic comedy) is now available. In addition, you can now support me on Patreon for exclusive advanced content and funky stuff!
