Peru V

More from this book:

Let us now write down our comparisons of
the Age of Guano with the Age of Gold.

I. The name and form of Government, it is true, are reduced to writing, but the Government is, and has been from the commencement of its Republican history, as unstable as water. On the close of the Guano Age things would
appear to be improving : President Pardo has completed the whole term of his presidential life, and this is only the second instance of a Peruvian Republican President having...

Peru IV

More from this book:

In the Golden Age Peru had: I. A significant name, a well-ordered, fixed,
and firm government, with hereditary rulers.
Only one rebellion occurred in twelve reigns,
and only two revolutions are recorded in the
whole history of the Inca Empire. II. The land was religiously cultivated. III. There was a perfect system of irrigation,
and water was made the servant and slave of
man. IV. The land was equally divided periodically
between the Deity, the Inca, the no...

Peru III

More from this book:
GOD made the good man : but it would seem that His Divine Majesty threw aces when He created mankind. Man instinctively inclines to good, but deceit poisons his soul and makes him an egotist, that is to say, perverse. Whosoever would aspire to a large harvest of evils, let him begin by sowing benefactions. Such is humanity, and very right was the King Don Alonso the Wise, when he said— ' If this world was not badly made, at least it appeared to be so.'

Peru II

This is more from the book mentioned in the previous post:
'I bought half-a-dozen Chinamen!' They might have been so many sacks of potatoes, or pieces of machinery, and the ease and familiarity with so repulsive a commerce which the speech denoted, proved too well the contempt which such familiarity always breeds.
How did you manage to do all that work ? ; was a question put at a dinner-table one night in Lima, when I was partaking of the awful hospitality of an English-speaking capitalist...

Peru

I have been reading Peru in the guano age; being a short account of a recent visit to the guano deposits, with some reflections on the money they have produced and the uses to which it has been applied by Duffield, A. J. and I came across a couple interesting tidbits:
…foggy, and changeable. The ladies of Peru are beautiful, natural, very intelligent, and fond of living an unconstrained life. Their climate is provocative of freedom, ease, and delightful idleness....

Cenotes

I was recently in Tulum, in the Mexican Yucatan. This part of Mexico is known primarily for Cancun and hotels on the beaches. But I stayed about 70 miles south of Cancun in Tulum, which is a small city located about a twenty minute drive from the beach and famous ruins. But what I discovered was that this part of the world was also known for the cenotes or xenotes.
The water system in this part of Mexico is all underground, running through deep caves that form lakes. Only a little light is exp...

Sweet Justice

Sweet Justice (Tales of the Unexpected #2) Sweet Justice by Ann Girdharry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sweet Justice is a short, dark story about a young girl struggling with the loss of her mother and dealing with an abusive stepfather. In the beginning, Tess suffers from a seizure and when she wakes up she becomes a witness to a disturbing crime. Throughout the story Tess is in a constant struggle with her stepfather, while at the same time trying to protect her brother and find out about the disappearance of her mother.

Overall, Sweet Just...

Twitter Revisited

I wrote about Twitter a little over two years ago. The stock went public at $26, rose to over $70, and now trades around $17. This is what I wrote:
Twitter is another example of the kind of absurd trading that is occurring again in the U.S. There is no conceivable way to justify this type of valuation unless you stretch logic to the extremes and imagine a scenario where Twitter some how takes over the world and everyone starts using it and maybe pays to use it or becomes engaged by the adverti...
