The Kindness of Strangers

I, the writer, have spent lonely hours tapping out my thoughts simply to share with anyone willing to listen through reading. I have not known you but I have thought of you as I wrote, hoping to present you something worthy of your time and – maybe – your praise.
You, the reader, have sought a book for comfort, escape, entertainment or information. You’ve worked or wept or anything in-between but now you seek something to take you away from humdrum life or build onto you understanding of the world.

But, we strangers do share our time in this world through books, a book written and read, thoughts shared in the impersonal, but intimate, compartment of a book. We cross paths made of words and become friends across the distance of a page yet never speak but still share what lies between the covers of a book. It is unique. It is wondrous. It is to be chosen carefully, my words and your reading. May we meet across on pages and share the gamut of all a chosen book can convey and be changed by one another in the passage of time – writing and reading – and no longer be kind strangers but comrades on the journey of our days.

Reviews for Trading Knives: “A prequel
Reviews for Trading Knives:
“A prequel short story that surprised me by how entertaining it was. Especially great were the intense knife-fighting scenes.”
“Solomon has a taut and controlled way with words. His style reminds me a bit of Isaac Asimov but with a high fantasy twist. I was intrigued by this story after the first few pages and he definitely left me hanging and wanting more. I’d recommend this to lovers of fantasy for sure.”

WHAT IS YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION? #RRBC #RWISA
Well said, Nonnie!!!
RAVE WRITERS - INT'L SOCIETY OF AUTHORS (rwisA)
Is it reputable or is it dishonorable? Well, so that you have a clear understanding of what a reputation is, let me give you a little refresher on the word.
REPUTATION:
The estimation in which a person or thing is held, especially by the community or the general public; the way in which people think of someone or something.
As an author, regardless of what others think or how I am perceived, my reputation is of extreme importance to me. I have worked hard to build my name and standing in the literary community, therefore, I guard it, and the perception of it, with great care.
Because we interact with our peers and our “communities” without the comfort of solidarity, yet, in an anonymous world behind keyboards, there are those that feel these situations offer them a green light to behave poorly and recklessly.
We’re all familiar with online…

Fantasy Authors Unplugged: Eric Tanafon
This is continuing feature on Archer’s Aim – Fantasy Authors Unplugged. I hope to frequently share an interview with a fantasy author. If you have authors to suggest and/or questions you’d like to see answered then leave a comment or send me an email. If you are a fantasy author and would like an interview please let me know and we’ll plan one that fits your schedule. Today I welcome Eric Tanafon to Archer’s Aim to share about his recent book release.
Interview
What is the title and plot of your book?
My latest book is The Road to Hel. It’s the first book in a series about Sean Cornwell. He’s a teenage gamer who wakes up one morning to find his parents gone and trolls besieging the house. He and his twin sister, Fiona, escape and, along with their best friends, enroll in the last hero school on Earth, on Runnymede Island. As it turns out, they’re the entire freshman class, since heroes just aren’t being born anymore. The good news is that Odin and all the other gods are on their side. The bad news is, of course, that the world is about to end. In the meantime, though, the new heroes and Valkyries get to rescue their parents from Hel and other, worse places, while playing ‘Spot the Traitor’ in their spare time.
What led you to write this book?
I’ve always wanted to write stories that make use of the Northern European gods and worldview. It’s part of my heritage. I wanted to deal with the concept of Ragnarok, the Twilight of the Gods, a predestined end to the world. And also I wanted to play around with the role of prophecy, which is of course huge in fantasy and always has been.
How did you start writing and why fantasy?
I started writing at an early age. My first productions were comic books with superhero or science fiction themes. I graduated into fantasy later on, and it looks like I’ll stick with it at this point. It offers a writer the greatest amount of freedom, I think, as well as an amazing tradition to draw on.
Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?
My first book, Robin Hood: Wolf’s Head, was my take on Robin Hood, with a supernatural twist. In that one, I pretty much covered the classic parts of the legend that have come down to us. I love all those characters—Robin, Marian, the Sheriff and the rest—so I’d like to do a sequel where we see what happened to them in the time of the Black Death, after the end of the traditional stories. But I owe Sean two more books, so those will probably come first.
Which writers inspire you?
The writers that have most influenced me are Fritz Leiber—particularly his great horror novels and the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series—R.A. Lafferty, and Tim Powers. Of those three, Powers is the only one who’s still writing, so I should probably be looking around for new inspirations!
Did this book write itself or was it hard to complete? Why?
Somewhere in between. Sean is the narrator of the book, and his voice was a bit hard to capture at first, but it became easier as I went on—to the point that I let him write not only the chapter titles, but also the back cover blurb. Also I don’t know much about computer gaming, but my son, who played online games at the time, helped me out there. The parts about Hel were fun to write, since I visualize it as a sort of supernatural version of the DMV—government bureaucracy run amok.
What actor best fits you main character and why?
Off the top of my head, the Seth Green of Buffy days wouldn’t be a bad pick. He had the deadpan wit and sarcasm down.
Do you “cast” your characters based on actors?
I never have. In fact, I just found out it’s a thing that some authors do. Now that I’ve started to put up Pinterest boards for my books, I’ll probably give it more thought. It could help both me and the readers in visualizing what’s going on.
About the Eric Tanafon and His Books
I write software by day and fantasy fiction by night (full moons preferred). I live in New Hampshire with my lovely wife in an 130-year-old house. We don’t have any ghosts, but the house is already full enough, with five children and three cats.

Characters from The Bow of Destiny: Limbreth
This is the third of several posts revealing more about characters from The Bow of Destiny. The first in this series was about Athson and the second featured Spark
Limbreth is a young woman who appears in the book as a traveling companion to Hastra. At first glance, she’s just a young, brash woman with a horse and a couple of swords. She got a lot of bravado and seems to be looking to make a name for herself. But there’s more to her than meets the eye. Her horse is rather well-trained and Limbreth seems to have some cavalry skill as well as some rather good training at least as a duelist.
But just who is Limbreth? She’s not willing to reveal her identity. Is she the typical beauty so often found in fantasy books? Well, she’s not a model nor is she someone like Brienne in Game of Thrones. Limbreth certainly falls somewhere between in the looks department. Is she like an Amazon, or even Brienne? I’d call her neither. She’s skilled with swords but she’s no knight like Brienne.
I wrote Limbreth into the book many years ago as a young woman with heroic aspirations. She wears white, light-weight leather armor made for dueling and her horse is white – she seems to like the color. Last year, I happened to read about Joan of Arc. I’d always heard about her and even seen a few shrines to her in some churches in France (my wife’s a French teacher so I’ve been a few times). However, I’d never really studied her closely. When I did, I found Limbreth to be eerily similar to her in appearance except for the hair style (Joan bobbed her hair). I never intended Limbreth to appear like her in any way. It just turned out that way through no intention of my own.
Along the way in the book (and what’s coming in the next two books), Limbreth’s role grows. In fact, she gets some very good scenes all through the series. But Athson is the true main character since everything revolves around him and the Bow of Hart. But Limbreth’s a character who’s grown in many ways from when I first added her to the book many years ago when I wrote the first draft. She now has far more complexity to her in addition to her larger role.

Writing Update: Progress on An Arrow Against the Wind
I thought I’d share about my progress on An Arrow Against the Wind today. Since The Bow of Destiny was released last Fall, I’ve been at work continuing The Bow of Hart Saga. An Arrow Against the Wind went to my editor early this year though behind schedule. I’ve since received it back with many changes to make in a structural edit. I must say that my editor did a great job of inferring what the arc of this book should be in spite of my wobbly rough draft. My editor is quite good at hitting the development nail squarely on the head.
However, as noted in early April, the cover of An Arrow Against the Wind has been completed. It’s already received a number of compliments. I can only hope that the book itself lives up to the quality of the cover and exceeds the current good ratings and reviews for The Bow of Destiny.
But it’s been a very busy season full of interruptions. I had wanted to complete An Arrow Against the Wind months ago but life has intervened and my writing schedule has suffered. It’s been a busy year of change so far as my daughter is graduating high school and preparing for college. We’ve spent quite a lot of time working on scholarship applications as well as those for college. Additionally, my work schedule has been much busier, leaving me with less energy to bring to writing than I wished.

However, the dust appears to be settling and my mind turns back to my project and all that it needs for the next round of editing. I hope to do complete this rather heavy round of editing soon enough to get the book to my editor for more work and then complete it for release this Fall. While it’s with the editor, I hope to complete the rough draft of The White Arrow but I’ll share about that project another time.
Additionally, I do hope to complete work on an anthology of completed short stories though some of these need some work yet. It should be a busy summer of writing but I hope it will end in some solid progress as I know a number of readers have expressed avid expectation to read An Arrow Against the Wind. I can only say please excuse my delays and I hope to oblige readers as soon as possible with the last two editions of The Bow of Hart Saga. I’ll post more definite release plans as the summer progresses as well as events for The Bow of Destiny and maybe the release of the short story anthology. Who knows, I may have time to get in another short story about the series as well.

INDIE WEDNESDAY — THE BOW OF HART SAGA by P.H. SOLOMON
Check out these reviews for the works in The Bow of Hart Saga!
Along my reading journey, I’ve made a conscious decision to not only read the books on the shelves at my local Barnes & Nobles store, or online at Amazon, but to also try self-published, or indie, works as often as I can.
Now, I know several of you are snickering in the background or rolling your eyes at my idiot crusade to bring a few good indie works to light. And, believe me, I understand why you’d do that. Several years into this, I have to admit that I’ve probably stopped reading more indie faire than I’ve finished, but those that did keep my attention were — or had the potential to be — above average stories, and I’d like to occasionally share those few in the hope that you might also discover them.
So without any Stephen King disclaimers (Read my review of The Dark Tower Book VII to get the…

Characters from The Bow of Destiny: Spark
This is the second of several posts revealing more about characters from The Bow of Destiny. You can read about Athson here. If you like dogs, you’ll love today’s post!
Spark was a rather interesting and late addition to The Bow of Destiny. You see, Spark is a dog but not just any dog. He’s a dog that only Athson sees while he’s not taking doses of his elven medicine, Soul-ease. You might wonder if Spark is real and so does Athson. However, Athson considers Spark an old friend who watches out for him.
The idea for this invisible dog came from my daughter who did some alpha reading on the book last year. She suggested adding a dog so Spark is what I came up with. In the book, Athson identifies this dog as a Mountain Hound but to you and me he’s a German Shepherd – or very much like one.
If you’ve read my bio you know we own two German Shepherds so you can guess the origin of this character. But there’s more to the characterization than just being like a common breed. Spark is actually based on both of my dogs, appearing more like our female, Chloe, while sometimes acting rather like our male, Sam.
Chloe & Sam
While Chloe is all guard-dog and ready for action all the time, Sam is more of a friendly bloke with a nasty side when necessary. But the unique quality of Sam is his way of communicating with us – he wags his tail for “yes” and doesn’t for “no”. Don’t believe me? Here’s a sample of Sam (Spark)-talk which is through a series of yes and no questions (and of course you have to catch Sam at a good time since he’s usually easily distracted like most dogs by things like food):
Me: “Sam, is it cold outside?”
Sam wags his tail – and it is (or was when this happened).
Me: “Sam, do you like the cold?”
Sam wags his tail because he really doesn’t like the hot Alabama summer but thrives in what cold weather we have.
Me: “Sam, do you want to sleep outside?”
Sam doesn’t wag his tail because, while he likes cold weather, he prefers to stay near his people like most GSDs do. This question is one that’s meant to ensure he’s really answering rather than just wagging his tail in distraction.
Me: “Sam, do you like Chloe?”
No wag because Chloe can really pesters him and bites him often since she’s rather feisty.
Me: “Sam, did Chloe bite you today?”
Sam wags his tail. Funny thing about dogs is that, being like wolf puppies, the males often let females win. Sam is much larger but always lets Chloe win.
Me: “Sam, do you want Chloe to sleep outside in the cold?”
Sam wags his tail. Yep that’s right, Sam wants Chloe to sleep outside while he gets to sleep inside.
We often can ascertain if Sam feels sick (he gets colitis) or achy (he’s getting a little older now and is starting to get stiff joints). We even found out that Sam wants a pet cat though this is likely the fact that he actually misses the old cat, Becky, who was still alive when Sam came to live with us. The cat hated Sam but he loved her. But you get the idea – Sam talks in his own way. He’s rather intelligent that way and even plays tricks on Chloe to get her to do what he wants. Now don’t think that Chloe is dumb by any means. She recognizes aggression easily and can solve some puzzles that Sam just won’t bother with.
So guess who speaks Sam-talk? Spark! I have a number of instances where Spark reveals something to Athson about his surroundings that Athson just doesn’t get. But you, the reader, get to understand that Spark may just know more about what’s going on at times than Athson.
