Trolls, goblins, wizards, elves, giants, and dragons, oh my!

bow of destinyHi everyone! Today I’m sharing another 5-star review just posted by a reader going by Over the Rainbow on Amazon:

Trolls, goblins, wizards, elves, giants, and dragons, oh my! The Bow of Destiny is a classic fantasy story full of fantastical creatures, magic, quests, and adventure…and just a smattering of romance. If you enjoy Tolkien, you’ll enjoy this novel. That being said, this is only the first book in the series, so be prepared for some threads to be left hanging. If you’re someone who wants to read the whole story in one go, you might want to wait for the series to be finished before starting this book. Overall, however, it was a fun read that moved fast enough to keep me engaged but had enough depth that I cared about the characters. Five stars.

I truly enjoy getting these reviews from readers who express satisfaction for The Bow of Destiny. It’s quite and honor and thrill to see the responses. As an author, these reviews really make my day.

Look for another post on Wednesday with a bit of news and some details on how I wrote the book and my choices. I meant to post this one last week but my schedule prevented getting a longer post out.

Recommended trilogies from Sir Lancer via Dragons & Jetpacks! Reblogging on Archer’s Aim!

Dragons & Jetpacks

Hidie Ho Neighbourinos!

Welcome to episode #3 of Sir Lancer Recommends!

The number three comes up a lot in the world of readers. So I figured for episode three we would focus on a trilogy. Actually, a trilogy of trilogies! and another trilogy! Kinda!

The first trilogy I am going to direct you towards has come up in a couple of Dragons and Jetpacks threads recently, and that is the Silo Trilogy by Hugh Howey.

A Nickname’s Origin

I really meant to include just Hastra’s quote here but I thought a couple paragraph’s a better post. It’s a shrewd observation from Hastra – but then she’s a Withling with mystic skills who sees some irony in Athson…

TBOD Pinterest Board ThumbHastra passed Athson food from the dishes after Limbreth spooned out her own. “Among all these elven archers, why would you be called the Archer?”

Athson pulled a half-smirk of irritation as Limbreth cocked her head while she chewed. He glanced at Sarneth, who forked up vegetables from his plate but offered no help. “I’m considered better than even Gweld, but I lost a tourney on a wild last shot. It’s a joke.” His weak smile discomfited him, and he shoveled food into his mouth as the Withling withdrew the bowl. That old bow-string entangled him. But he’d escape it if he could.

“So an inerrant archer who’s inaccurate.”

That’s all for today! Have a great weekend and look for more posts next week.

THE GHOUL KING

A good review from Bookwraiths for a Friday morning. Reblogging on Archer’s Aim!

the ghoul kingThe Ghoul King by Guy Haley

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic

Series: Dreaming Cities #2

Publisher:  Tor (July 12, 2016)

Author Information: Website | Twitter

Length:  176 pages

MY RATING: 4 stars

After loving Guy Haley’s first Dreaming Cities novella, The Emperor’s Railroad, I have to admit being beyond excited to get my hands on The Ghoul King. The post-apocalyptic setting, zombies, Angels, dragons, guns, and mysterious yet relatable Knight Quinn mixed to create the perfect kind of genre blending speculative fiction which I adore. Hell, even Haley’s narrative style of allowing an elderly man named Abney to relate his adventure in the wilds of the Kingdom of Virginia as a young boy with Quinn, Knight of Atlantis, worked wonderfully, adding such a mysterious tone to the story that I had to know more.

In The Ghoul King, the author actually begins the tale by focusing on the mythical…

Who Wins Between…

BoxersJust something a little light-hearted today – and geeky!

Something occurred to me along the lines of the questions/debates such as, “Between Batman and Superman who wins?” Thanks to Star Wars we do know who wins between a Jedi and a space dinosaur, er, Rancor: the Jedi!

And you also have to note in light of the last movie that from those early years and the Space Illustrated Swimsuit Edition parties hosted by Jabba the Hut!

Feel free to share your best ideas about who wins vs. who in the comments! Maybe there’s a tournament where a poll winner advances to the next round! Leave your suggestions and links!

That’s all for today! Later this week, I’ll share more about how I wrote The Bow of Destiny and how I’m doing on the next one.

The Bow of Destiny remains on sale at just  $1.49 the rest of July! Click over to one of these online retailers and see who wins in the hunt for the bow:

His Nagging Secrets

Hi, everyone! Today, I share another excerpt from The Bow of Destiny. Some of this was added in much later stages of the book. It’s all about Athson’s nagging, inconvenient secrets…

Athson“Careful of trolls on the trail.” The old man smacked his lips and fidgeted.

Athson whirled and glared at the old man. “We’ve done well.” He turned away.

A wheezy chuckle erupted behind him before Athson took two steps. “You should ignore neither warnings, dreams, nor visions – nor gifts.”

Athson froze mid-step. Moments passed like a day as he turned. Shock filled him anew when he saw no sign of the trapper on the porch.

He leapt back up the steps, landing with a clatter on the boards. He yanked open the door and took a hurried look inside the post. Lukaus and Gweld shot him startled expressions but Athson didn’t see the trapper. As Athson slammed the door, Lukaus said, “Back so soon?”

Three quick steps along the porch and Athson jumped the rail at the corner of the building. He glanced under the porch and circled the post, searching both the forest and the ground for sign of the trapper. Nothing. The trapper’s absence and his words set Athson’s heart racing. That comment hit too close to what had happened. And what no one else knew but him. Was the trapper nearby when he first discarded the inheritance? Athson rubbed his hands together but the scrapes had healed days earlier.

Athson’s jaw flexed. Something – or someone – had followed him from Eagle’s Aerie. Lukaus indicated no one had passed through for a long time. The comments from the missing trapper and the post-keep left Athson dizzy. “Can’t tell what’s real yet. I’m still making things up, no matter…” But they were real, he knew it.

The room and cot weren’t so inviting anymore.

Athson shrugged his pack to a comfortable position on his shoulders and made for the trail at his fastest walk. His best course now lay south for the road and away from Withlings, odd trappers, and mouthy station-keeps. The more distance travelled, the easier to avoid entanglements with Corgren, Withlings, eagles, dreams, Spark, and whatever haunted his steps – both imagined or not. He waved a cloud of gnats out of his face.

Gweld leaned over the porch rail. “Hey, Athson. What about the room?”

Athson whirled. “Let’s just go.” He waved Sarneth’s order.

Gweld shrugged, hollered apology through the door and then leapt the rail. Athson grumbled his disappointment under his breath at missing sleep on a cot. Hiding his secrets was more important than comfort. He swatted the insects out of his eyes and quick-stepped away from Afratta as Gweld trotted to his side.

That’s all for today! Later this week, I’ll share more about how I wrote The Bow of Destiny and how I’m doing on the next one.

“Destiny can be… inconvenient”

bow of destinyHello everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to share the most recent 5-star review of The Bow of Destiny from Amazon.

Destiny can be,,, inconvenient, but is always unavoidable.

“Without any spoilers, I can only say that the author was wise in his choices. The characters are multi-dimensional, yet true to the tone of the epic fantasy in progress. You will find yourself spending far too much time reading this one, and neglecting other things. But in the end you’ll have had a ride in a world of magic, and more. The journey to…. but that’s a spoiler, so all I’ll say is that one can almost see the trail, and fear the Trolls.“

Very kind and well-written words from a reader named Victor! I’m humbled by this wonderful review. I really think this is one of the best summations of the book thus far and I’m pleased every time someone leaves this kind of review. It’s truly made my day and one of the reasons I write – to hear that someone enjoyed the tale!

THE KNIGHTS OF CRYSTALLIA

Reblogging on Archer’s Aim…

the knights of crystallia The Knights of Crystallia by Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Fantasy — Middle Grades/Young Adult

Series: Alcatraz #3

Publisher: Starscape (April 19, 2016)

Author Information: Website | Twitter

Length: 320 pages

My Rating: 4 stars

The Knights of Crystallia is the third installment of the Alcatraz series by Brandon Sanderson.  For those who don’t understand what a series actually means and where you should start reading it, Alcatraz Smedry is nice enough to help explain all this as this book begins.

I know that some of you Hushlanders have trouble counting to three.  (The Librarian-controlled schools don’t want you to be able to manage complex mathematics.)  So I’ve prepared this helpful guide.

Definition of “book one”: The best place to start a series.  You can identify “book one” by the fact that it says BOOK ONE on the back cover.  Smedrys do a happy dance when you read book one first.  Entropy…
