That evening, after Rose was fed, Brie decided to call Matthew ...
“We’ll be back on Friday,” ... “Oh, by the way,” (she) said, yawning suddenly, “I’m having lunch with Noor Ansari later this week.”
There was a pause. “Why?”
Brie was stretched out on the bed. It was a fair question. Noor Ansari was not a friend of hers. She sat up. “Because she called and asked me to.” “If you recall,” she continued before Matthew could interrupt, “I did promise her that we would get together the next time I was in the city.”
“Is she with her husband?”
The question was asked casually and seemed innocuous enough. But Brie knew it was far from it. She rolled her eyes. “No, she’s here with a staff of servants and a bodyguard.”
“A bodyguard?”
“Yep. It appears that her husband wants her protected ‘round the clock’,” Brie said, smiling.
There was a long pause. “I see.”
“You see what?” Brie responded, a hint of impatience in her tone. She waited. Matthew clearly had something on his mind that he wanted to say. “What is it, Matthew?”
“You can see Noor, but I do not want you near Sharif.”
“Matthew...,” Brie started, ready to argue.
“There’s nothing to discuss, Brielle. You are not to see Sharif Ansari.”
His authoritarian attitude was really getting under her skin.
“And what if Sharif happens to join us for lunch? Exactly what do you expect me to do?”
“I expect you to get up, excuse yourself, and leave.”
A shocked Brielle pulled the phone from her ear. She stared at the screen. What. The. Fuck?
She quickly brought the phone back to her ear. “Matthew, I am not getting up in the middle of a restaurant and storming out just because you don’t like the person I’m sitting with!”
“You think I’m saying this because I don’t happen to care for the man?”
“Matthew, I don’t agree with the way you’re asking me to handle this.”
“I’m not asking you.”
“What you’re demanding from me is unfair....”
“Don’t try me, Brie.”
Brie was seething. “Don’t try you? Try you?”
She paused as she took in a shaky breath. She let the air out of her lungs in a whoosh. “And what if I don’t do what you want?” she said, attempting to get her anger under control.
“Then I will spank your ass from London to the Highlands. And I promise you, this time you won’t enjoy it.”
Brielle’s mouth slammed shut. Holy shit! Her voice dropped. “You wouldn’t dare!” she said through gritted teeth.
Matthew was silent at the other end of the phone. Brie tried to wait him out. She could hear his heavy breathing. She could tell that he was mad as hell. A small shiver of unexpected fear ran down her spine just before her stomach clenched in excitement. It was ironic that when he was like this, he appeared almost bigger than life. And in this Alpha mode, he was totally hot. But would he really do that? Spank her as a punishment?
Another minute passed before she finally broke the silence. “Would you really spank me if I don’t do what you say?” she asked, her voice still low.
“I don’t make idle threats, Brielle.”
She heard him take several deep breaths. He was trying to calm down.
Eventually, he spoke to her again. His voice was calmer now, his tone sincere.
“Listen to me, Brie. Sharif Ansari is not to be trusted. ... Considering the shit he tried to pull, how would you like me to respond?”
Brie was quiet. He was right. Sharif had lied to (them both). And Matthew was her husband. He was her priority and deserved her loyalty and, more importantly, respect.
Finally, (she) acquiesced, breaking the tension that lingered between them. “Alright, Matthew.” The sting in her tone had disappeared. “I’ll make sure that I don’t spend any time with Sharif.”
There was an audible exhalation of air released on the other end of the phone.
Then, Brie thought again about his threat to spank her. It was obvious from his tone that the threat was real, that any spanking he delivered over this subject would not be about sex. He had meant it. Every word. Brie’s eyes narrowed.
“,,,if he tries to lay one hand on me....”
“...listen to me, If you try to spank me as a punishment,” she said out loud, “I will....” Suddenly, she was at a loss for words.
Matthew waited a beat. “You’ll what, Brielle?” he asked coolly. “Tell me.” He wasn’t backing down.
Brielle cursed under her breath.
