JD Estrada new book release

While I haven't read this particular book I am very familiar with the author, who has become a good friend of mine because he is such an amazing person, and despite the fact that he prefers tea over coffee. You can't be right about everything I suppose. This looks to be an amazing book and I cannot wait for it to come out. It will be just in time for Christmas shopping so make sure you grab a copy for the kiddo in your life.

John Rivers is a kind and imaginative 11-year-old whose new home may be cozy, but there’s nothing magical about it. What he doesn’t know is that magic is actually closer than he thinks. After strolling up a hill near his house, he finds a cliff with a cove at the bottom with a huge tree growing over the water. What’s special about this particular tree is that it currently serves as the resting spot for a house that defies logic while embracing the amazing. As curious as he is kind, one look at Od Manor is all it takes for John to jump at the chance to explore a new world of wonder.

The First Odventure Novel: Given to Fly by JD Estrada
Have you ever wanted to read a book that dreams about becoming a Studio Ghibli film? Well now you can. Given to Fly is the 13th book by Puerto Rican indie author JD Estrada and his first full length middle grade fantasy novel. But more importantly, it’s a book with a lot of heart and no violence.
If you see movies, TV, video games, or the news at any given moment, it’s almost as if violence is a required ingredient in whatever medium we enjoy. Given to Fly is a book that avoids the use of violence even when it talks about real issues like death, financial and professional struggles, and life in general in favor of finding joy and life lessons through the fantastical.
At 11 years old, John Rivers is a kind hearted kid who dreams about flying. He’s just moved to the Pacific Northwest with his family to a house that although it’s very lovely and very cozy, it’s not exactly magical. What he doesn’t know is that magic is actually closer than he thinks.
After strolling up a hill near his house, he finds a cliff with a cove at the bottom and a huge tree growing over the water. What’s special about this particular tree is that it currently serves as the resting spot for a house that defies logic while embracing the amazing. As curious as he is kind, one look at Od Manor is all it takes for John to jump at the chance to explore a new world of wonder.
Apart from John Rivers, the other main protagonist in the novel is Fäet Odstein, the literary persona of JD Estrada. Although mainly based on Estrada himself, Fäet probably also has a little bit of Willy Wonka, Cheshire Cat, and many other characters that resonate with JD.  Given to Fly is also the first of what will be a series of stand-alone middle-grade novels with Fäet Odstein as one of its protagonists. The purpose of these books shall be to offer stories without violence that hopefully get more children to read and dream.
This is not the first time JD Estrada has written middle grade fantasy stories. His Daydreams on the Sherbet Shore have been described as whimsical bedtime stories with a lot of heart. That same heart was the main driver for this story. Like most of his works, Given to Fly was written longhand in one of the best gifts Estrada has ever received in his life. A long time ago, his wife gifted him a hard cover notebook. The image on it was particularly special to him. She had asked him what image meant the most to him. Without batting an eye, he looked up the image to the Pearl Jam single by the same name. A couple of months later and with misty eyes, he had a hard cover notebook with that same image and the name could only be Given to Fly. But what to write about…
The question lingered in the air and rumbled in his brain until a trip to Orlando had him and his wife going to Epcot Center and getting on the Soarin’ ride for the first time. As sights, sounds, and smells washed over him in the beautiful flight simulator, an idea was born and by the end, he had soared right into an epiphany. “It’s going to be about a boy who dreams about flying,” he told his wife through tears of joy after getting off the ride.
Several years have passed after that ride and finally Given to Fly is ready for you to read. It is a tribute to things that bring him joy and a song that makes his soul smile. In honor of the band that has inspired his life so much, all proceeds for Given to Fly and all other Estrada books for the remainder of 2018 shall be donated to Actionforjackson.org in support of #EBAwareness. Epidermolysis Bullosa is a family of rare genetic disorders that affect the body's largest organ: the skin and Eddie Vedder (lead singer for Pearl Jam) has worked hard to support this cause. It is a small token of gratitude for everything the band means to Estrada and aligns with his #Humans4Humans efforts to support different causes and try to make a positive impact through his writing and any other efforts to support good causes that help our fellow humans.

Author Interview with JK Allen

A couple months back I was lucky enough to meet this wonderful woman. And instantly fell in love. She's like a long lost sister and I am SO happy to have met her. I adopted her immediately, and no she didn't have any choice in the matter.

So follow along as I harass my kith and learn more about her as an author! I made her responses green cause she likes that color, and it makes me smile.

Hello Julia-kith! Welcome to my blog, say hello to everyone!

Salutations to you all! Thanks for joining me today and thank you Bekah-kith for the kind words and for hosting.

Always! I love talking to you. And even better when we can talk shop. I've read Angelborn, obviously, but I have held back my questions until now. Let's start with, What got you to start writing in the first place?

I literally learned how to write and thought to my little self, "What now? Oh I can write a story!" So I wrote a fairy tale and never stopped writing. All growing up I wrote, and then when I got to college, I learned I could major in English and Creative Writing. That's when I decided to be an author.

OMG that is too cute and sounds just like you. You've been published before this book. What other publications have you been in?

I've been lucky to be in a few anthologies. Two short stories of mine are in Tales from Our Write Side, which was my first publication. Then my dark fairytale about a twin princess who doesn't want to share was published in Mirrors and Thorns. And four of my poems are featured in Primal Elements which I was lucky enough to be editor for so I got to know those poems closely (and highly recommend them). My next short story pub will be in Glass and Ashes which comes out in November.

And now your Angelborn series is starting. The first book is aptly named Angelborn where Ginny first learns about her heritage. Where did you get the idea for this series?

I was reading a story that portrayed angels as menacing and disdaining of humans and I thought to myself aren't they supposed to be compassionate? What if an angel fell in love with humanity? Then Ginny, his daughter, came to me. This angel was told to have children to protect humans from demons and here was her story.

It sounds super cool when you put it that way! And you did a super fun twist on your demons too. Wanna share a little something about them? That way you can decide how much to say without giving away spoilers.

Well my favorite part of what I imagined for demons were the changelings. We have our myth of vampires. They are super strong and fast, have regenerative powers, and never age. My mythology is they are actually changelings. But they don't drink human blood. They need demon blood to survive and become demons when they die.

So fun! And what do they look like?

They look like us but with black eyes and flushed red cheeks when they have fresh blood and are ready for a fight.

Creeeeeeeeeeeeepy! I love it! And you followed actual mythology for some of this too. Including the names. How much research did you have to do to write this?

This was actually the first story I had to do research for (it's gotten worse as the series continues haha), but I found all of it interesting. That made it a lot easier to go through the process. I researched angels and demons and the different names I use in the series. Samyaza was a big research point for me and the basis of my character Shemiazaz.

And your angel?

I didn't want to base him off of a specific angel. I guess I didn't want to be disrespectful to those who believe in angels by portraying a certain one in my specific way. But I really enjoyed imagining Grace and felt inspired to write him the way I did.

I approve of this method. That was really smart of you. And the hilariously awkward relationship between Ginny and her best friend?

Well I think Ginny has the best awkward parts of me (haha) and so that comes out naturally in her relationships. But luckily those in her life accept it and roll with it.

Actually, you have a lot of realistic and amusing relationships in your book. Including everyone at the Alliance House who are of the same blood line but not really related any longer. They all act and interact as people that grew up with each other though and have at least a bond, even if they don't always get along. More like, "yeah that guy's a black sheep" instead of "that guy's a raging asshole". Was it hard keeping all those different relationships straight in your head?

Thank you! Actually characters and relationships are my favorite part to write and read in a book. And I think they come more naturally to me than other aspects of writing.

For sure you are good at it. I swear some of those parts felt like watching into a family gathering. Especially the meals. And the cocky, protective, sweet, older brothers who always had a reason or excuse for anything.

But you also set up the fight scenes perfectly, and as I was discussing with another fan, you're foreshadowing is sneaky and on point and I love it. My third read through, yes I've read Angelborn three times now, it finally dawned on me just how sneaky it was and I started all over again to keep an eye out for that. Do you put it down that way in your first draft? Do you know what is going to be important later? Or do you back up and add those things in after you realize it will be needed later?

I'm an outliner. I can't begin until I know my characters and my scene list and have made all my connections and discoveries. I used to be a pantser but then I realized I never finished anything because I never knew where I was going next. For Angelborn this was the first time I plotted first and once I was getting ideas for this book and even later in the series, the connections and foreshadowing started to make sense.

Ah! One of you crazy planning people. No wonder I had to ask about it. I have always failed at plotting. I make good plots, then write stories that have nothing to do with that. And you already have the second book all plotted up and written, right?

Yes! I am and I do haha! The sequel, Heavenfire, is currently in the editing process and getting ready for its release April 18 of next year.

Which is also going to be amazing everyone. I am sneaky so I have already grabbed a sneak peak on that. Julia is there anything else you want to share with my readers?

Yes! You can find me at www.facebook.com/hijinkswriter www.instagram.com/hijinkswriter www.twitter.com/hijinkswriter hijinksblog.wordpress.com

And thank you so much for joining me!

Scath Oran

Keeping it real, I am completely biased, but I think this cover is so friggin pretty.

And the poems inside this cover! So fun. Stacy Overby has written a collection of poems, in different styles, based on Celtic lore. I did my best NOT to read this as I worked on it. But of course I couldn't help myself. I read some. And one I loved so much I got the author's permission to use part of the poem as a song in my own book.

Is it this one?No.

Maybe this one? No, but it would have been good for my first book!
But I do know that if you read the book, on sale this Fall Equinox September 22nd, you will get to see which one I am talking about. So go get your copy and read some tales from the Otherworld. Scath Oran

The Alliance, an organization that is supposed to help people like her, is threatened by her potential gifts. They are more invested in their own hierarchy then in upholding their divine mandate. Author Interview with Robert Cano

I love talking about great fantasy novels, and I love pestering fun, witty people. Here I get to do at least one of those things.

Me: Hey Robert Cano, how do you pronounce your last name? Cause there's a really silly youtube chick out there that mispronounces it all the time I think. And you should probably correct her.

Cah-noh Think Spanish
Yeah I will totally get on that silly chick and correct her. Ahem, moving on. You've got an amazing dark fantasy novel that came out recently, The Dark Archer. So my main question is, why are you so mean to your poor characters?

My poor characters have to live their lives.  And life is messy, and ugly, and often cruel.  It takes no prisoners.  It's love doesn't come easily.  And so, as I write, my characters are living - through the good, the bad, and the ugly. So I'm not mean.  They just have to find ways to endure.  Or find their end on their own terms.
Hell, after that explanation I can't even be mad about it any more. Shit, not even that pillar part. Fine. You're off the hook for that until the next time I feel cranky, at least. Now I love Bene even more.

Same.  He's fascinating.

Does he hate the princess?

Not at all.  And in TSC, you get to see a more...interesting...interaction between them.  He wants to hate her, but he can't. That relationship will play out much more in future tales

I've read her story, your first book The Suffering, and I have got to say, I hate the princess. Which is probably why it takes someone as strong and pure as Bene to keep it together after he has been ripped apart and filled with life eating darkness and despair. Then  bashed about several times over the course of his adventures. And seen his closest friends die. But now I am wondering if Bene will win out, in the end. Will he be able to convert his princess back?

That's asking for some massive spoilers.... I will say this. Devani/Sha'yanna's story is far from over.  And Bene will find out something even darker about himself in the future.

Darker than being the "living"  personification of despair. Damn.

Devani and Bene's relationship is that of opposite sides to the same coin.... And think "darker" in terms of evil.  Every human has the capacity for the greatest good, or the greatest evil.  My stories explore all of these ideas.

Bene's nature is going to turn evil?! That is a massive spoiler. And plot twist.

I didn't say he was turning evil. Just something about himself that is darker in terms of good and evil. Iiiiiiinteresting. I already couldn't wait to read your next book now I kinda want to make you go write right now.

Right!?

Sounds like a plan

But I won't. Because I also like pestering you and gaining insights into the story and characters.

LOL Fair enough

And I have rope if you get too squirrely on me.

Try taming this mind is like herding a bag of cats

Huh, good that I have experience in such things, then.

That you do!

Ok no more questions about the next book, I will ask you that not in public.

That sounds like a good idea

The Liminal Hymns book release!

The Liminal Hymns Blurb:
The Liminal Hymns sing the story of moments between, leaving certainties to embrace doubt. Liminal spaces are explored through examinations of mythology, philosophy, and religion. With sardonic shots of whiskey and wit, this collection delves into the sensory and psychological kaleidoscope of the human condition.
This is the latest book from one of my favorite authors. She is also a supremely talented musician, singer, and painter, among other things. This woman is made of artistic talent, seriously.

And when you put together all of those talents you get beauties like this.

And her book cover which she painted herself. Even if you just snag it for the artistic beauty it is still totally worth it.So go grab it!
