Friday Feast | Dreaming of Spring

A hearty welcome to Friday Feast in the tavern!
Yesssss, I do realize it's the end of February and spring is over a month away. However, my heart and soul is battling against the dreary skies, rain, and thick fog we're having here. Do I want to banish winter right now? Not yet. But this picture of one of my small flower planters has me yearning to put my fingers into the soil and plant new seedlings.
So when I start to daydream about warmer weather, I think of all the delicious salads to pre...

Medieval Monday | Word for the Month of February

Welcome to Medieval Monday, my friends! We're on our way into the month of February, and I'm my thoughts are returning to ancient words. I could sit for hours researching a word or phrase. With my stories, I try to stay connected to the time-period with my writing. Will a word I use be exact? Not always. Often, I find myself going beyond the century and spilling into the next. I wish to convey the time-period without have to supply a dictionary to my readers.
The word for this month is one I ...

February Romance in the Tavern

Welcome to the tavern on this second day of February! Since I'm writing this post the day before, I won't know the report from Punxsutawney Phil and if he did or did not see his shadow. Regardless, the storm continues outside my den window.
I always think of February as the "chocolate" month. I make chocolate cakes, shortbread, cupcakes, and candy. Yet the recipe below is one my knight asks for around our anniversary (February 12th marks 41 years), so I thought to share my version. I don't beli...

Medieval Monday | Wandering Through the Past

Welcome to Medieval Monday!
Recently, I’ve read articles relating to archaeological finds—some were for curiosity and others for research. An article on the Picts caught my attention and reminded me of my time visiting South Ronaldsay, Orkney, specifically near the Tomb of Eagles.
Feared by the Romans as fierce blue painted warriors, the Picts have captured the imagination of historians for centuries, including myself. Little is known about these people who lived in a large part of Scotland f...

Friday Feast | Comfort Soup

Welcome back to Friday Feast in the tavern! I hope you've had a wonderful week.
I’ve spoken numerous times about soups being a favorite in our home, especially during the autumn and winter months. Making a hearty or comforting pot of soup is a soothing ritual for me. Often, I’m more focused on a current scene in my work-in-progress, and I find myself going through the motions of prepping what’s in front of me. Psst, not a good plan. I’ve been known to add the wrong ingredient and/or too much s...

Winter Newsletter 2024

Welcome the season of winter, dear friends!
I hope you had a lovely holiday season. We’re now a week into 2024, and I feel the wheel of the seasons turning once again. As I’m an optimistic gal, I greet each new year with a promise of hope. You notice I didn’t mention resolutions. Nope—I gave those up decades ago. Usually, a word(s) or phrase sifts through my thoughts at the beginning of the new year, and I ponder their meaning with each passing month.
My words for this year are simplicity an...

Friday Feast | Holiday Crock Pot Ham

Welcome back to Mary’s Tavern and a new year! I hope your holidays were peaceful and filled with the joy and love of family and friends—along with some delicious food.
With so much happening in my life in December, I wanted to prepare a Christmas meal that wouldn’t have me in the kitchen from dawn till dusk. An easy solution to the main course was to cook the ham in a crock pot, leaving the oven for all the other savory dishes.
I’m definitely a fan of the crock pot—from soups and appetizers,...
