Downtime
The last few months have been busy in my life outside writing, which means that while I’ve put a lot of thoughts in my journal I haven’t come up with any brilliant new ideas for books, have been stalled in any marketing efforts, just haven’t felt like working on any of it. It’s been a creative lull.
As I was beating myself up about this yet again this morning, I tried to remember what’s really true.
What’s really true is, writing is my hobby because I ENJOY it, not because it’s something I si...

Defining Who You Are as a Writer | author’s note
Last night I was invited to give a talk about writing to a women’s group, which was an honor and a pleasure. I so appreciate the attention and interest of those 25 women, who asked such intelligent questions and so generously celebrated my accomplishments. Following is the text of what I shared about myself.
I’m honored and excited to be invited to speak to you, because of what this group does and what it’s meant to my family, and also because it’s a huge treat for me to talk about writing. I...

5 Reasons to Self-Publish | author’s note
In this insanely competitive publishing market, there are clearly a lot of benefits to signing with an agent and being backed by a publisher. Marketing budgets, the guidance of an editor, the expertise of an agent… invaluable resources that can help achieve success beyond what self-published authors typically can on our own. I’m the last person to insist that you don’t need the industry, because the industry is powerful for a reason. It makes successes.

Letting Your Book Out | author’s note
I love to talk about writing, and always appreciate it when people I meet want to discuss my books with me. What’s funny is how often in these conversations I hear the same comments. Some people express how interested they are, then immediately feel the need to explain why they don’t have time to read. I’ve heard several times that someone started one of my books and became convinced that heroine must be me, because I write fiction in the first person. But the most common remark I hear, and I...
