Five Reasons to Self-Publish | author’s note

I was against self-publishing for quite some time. It just wasn’t for me, no way, nohow, mainly because of the following two stumbling blocks:

I felt bombarded with stories (from NPR, agency sites, advice from other authors) about how the publishing industry looks down on self-publishing. It wasn’t the right way to do it. Self-publishing was a short cut, and they felt it polluted the industry without any standards or gatekeepers. (Maybe it does—but then again, there’s a whole lot of traditiona...

Finding Inspiration | author’s note

I’m not going to use the word “stuck,” because it isn’t completely accurate. Finding the right word or phrase is always important, and stuck sounds so negative. Like I’m stuck in something sticky and unpleasant, which definitely isn’t the case. Instead, I’ll say I’ve been positively challenged as I determine what my characters are going to do next. They’re all showered and dressed for the day, they just need to get going. Somewhere.

I have some ideas, and as soon as I sit down and get to it I...

Gearing Up for Book 2 | author’s note

I’ve been making kind of amazing progress on my latest book the past week or so, finally well past the halfway point and seeing the light at the end of the story. At the same time, I’m preparing to release the second book in the series on Wednesday.

It’s all ready to go, edited (and re-edited by my wonderful mom) and uploaded and priced, I just have to hit that final publish button and suddenly I’m the author of TWO books on Amazon. I feel like it’s going to be a lot easier to sell people on m...

“Good new author and series”

Customer review from Amazon.com

“Strangers on This Road” (A Sliding Sideways Mystery) (Kindle Edition)

5 out of 5 stars

July 24, 2012

ByJean Meyer

It’s always exciting to find a good new mystery/romance novel, and to find what promises to be the start of a series is even better. I liked the humor and intelligent commentary as well as the blend of romance and mystery in Strangers on this Road.

The characters are interesting individuals who left me wanting more — the next installment or adventure to...

Cool Stuff I’ve Researched | author’s note

I recently found myself in a conversation about codes and Bletchley Park, and not only did I know what Bletchley Park was and why it was important in WWII, I was able to impart my very amateur knowledge about the critical role of Polish cryptographers in breaking the German codes. This exchange reminded me that as I’ve written each book in the series (seven so far), I’ve had the opportunity to research some really interesting and random topics online. All thanks to the internet, which is trul...

Selling Myself on Self-Promotion | author’s note

Now that I’m really doing it, actually selling my books through Amazon as a self-published author, suddenly I’m faced with something I have a really hard time doing: effective self-promotion.

I never mind when other people promote their books, businesses, bands, creations, blogs, whatever amazing things they’re doing. I don’t think “FOR SHAME!” and shake my head at their audacity—totally the opposite. I’m always interested and impressed, whether or not I want to buy the album or artwork or jew...

The Fun of It All | author’s note

As I’m rereading my series for the first time in more than a year, I’m reminded of how amazingly FUN it was to write these books. The researching online – on Wikipedia and Google Earth, and, of course, Interpol’s website; the pulling together of plots; the characters who would randomly pop up out of nowhere, fully-formed (Sheila in book 4 was totally unplanned when she opened the door); the lightning strike when an idea came together and the time spent struggling with a stubborn plot twist.

I...
